Heck, buying F3's Broken Steel made him essentially invincible by later levels. A convenient bug/oversight made him level up with you so long as you had the DLC installed when you first acquired him. I've seen level 30 Dogmeat take on a Behemoth and win...
There was one time Dogmeat was chewing on the leg of an Enclave Trooper and I hit them both with a mini-nuke. I was searching for pieces of the trooper for the next 5 minutes. Dogmeat had barely a scratch.
I bought the GOTY edition and so have never experienced a Dogmeat that can be killed. The first thing I do after visiting Megaton is go pick him up. And, yeah, I've seen him take on Behemoths, Feral Ghoul Reavers, missile launchers, etc. and be just fine.
Hell, even before that DLC Dogmeat was pretty damned hard to kill, which is why the game may have named him Dogmeat, but I call him Krypto.

He never did clip through the floor in my playthroughs. I, on the other hand, haven't been as fortunate.
If Dogmeat died you could pick a perk that would spawn his puppies. Everytime the dog dies a new puppy is spawned. Endless dog. More health too.

No lie, I've never used a single companion in any Bethesda games for this reason.

I'm with you. I hate them getting in my way as I (usually) go stealthy first. I use companions as pack mules only. Stand them at the beginning of an area. Tell them to "STAY! Good Boy!" And then loot everything and load them down. Then they can follow me back to my base or the nearest vendor. About the only exceptions have been Veronica and Boone in New Vegas. Both can be told to keep their freaking distance. Boone will stay back and spot or snipe, and Ronnie can be set to "aggressive" so she will go agro so I can snipe and stay hidden for easy crits.

People actually use companions in Bethesda games? As anything more than spare carrying capacity that is?

Dogmeat was kind of cool. You sorta felt like that wasteland wanderer badass with a tender streak. Carrying around the Blackhawk on your hip. Wandering from place to place like you and your dog own everything from where you're standing to the horizon. As much as stealth makes a difference in FO3 (or basically any Fallout game) ... I couldn't bring myself to stealth with Dogmeat by my side. Mainly because it was stupidly hard, but Dirty Harry-ing it so much cooler with a killer, yet lovable mutt by your side.

With the DLC it became stupidly powerful so it was only the environment that used to kill 'Meat with any regularity. Occasionally eliciting an angry thud against my desk because oftn times you wouldn't realise after you had wasted 4 or 5 Supers. Realising your companion died a fight back ... you just assume they're tearing out a mutant's throat off screen ... Nope. Reload a save. Start again. Give Dogmeat an angry stare.

I always kept Dogmeat at my place where he could chill. Mostly because he's a freaking annoyance other wise. But the cyberdogs are always cooler, especially K-9 from Fallout 2, Sarcastic cyberdogs are the best.

For some bizarre reason, my Dogmeat was an absolute tank. Maybe it was cause I didn't happen to get him until near the end of the game, but when I did; he could take hits like a champ. At the start I was filled with fear when I saw him charge into a room and attract the attention & gunfire of a dozen Enclave, but I'd gun them all down and see him run back to me with me most of his health still intact, tongue hanging out and tail wagging.

Ohh... that would explain it! I was playing GOTY edition :p

Given the latest type of "bugs" in Bethesda games, I'd image Dogmeat would suddenly float into the air, upside-down, and fly backwards into oblivion.

Well, that or have his limbs spaz out and have his ragdoll just sort of fold into itself, disappearing entirely.

Ever since the noclip cheat in Unreal clipping has been woefully unapreciated. It's clearly there especially for the anecdotal lulz :p
I'd say since the time of Doom. I recall many a tale of players doing "silly things" once they learned the 'idclip' command.

So lost with this and what others said about Dogmeat, he was unkillable, he got into a fight with enclave soldiers in a parkinglot when they set off every car and I watched from a distance trying to snipe as mushroom clouds spread across the lot, my PC at the time chugged and I was like "Yeah, that'd be 1 dead dog" no, he survived, he survived the plasma gunfire, the nukes and came back as happy as ever.

Dogmeat is an unstoppable killing machine, he will bring doom upon the wasteland once more!! ...Or clip through the floor.

Dogmeat in all Fallouts was always rather squishy. Fallout 3, he got more durable, but still didn't hold too much. It wasn't until Broken Steel Dogmeat forgot that he was a dog and thought he was a four-legged tank (as he got ungodly amounts of health when YOU leveled up) and added a late-game perk that allowed you to have him respawn with 500 extra health if he died.

The only time I actually bothered to give my companions anything was in Skyrim and that was also only the REALLY heavy stuff (Dragonbones and Dragonskin, mostly). Every other game? Meatshields. Or, in case of Boone, a tactical nuke against anything even vaguely Legion-looking.

Just playing FO:NV for the first time. .... thanks for reminding me what I have to look forward to :( I'm up to 7 mods already trying to stamp some stupid out of the game so I can get on with the gameplay. (can't fill bottles with water. In the desert. Because...? )

I guess I'll just park the companions so they don't get in the way of my first playthrough. Generally I don't need the help anyways, once I've gotten decent gear that is.

Alright, this is my all time favorite, FAVORITE Critical Miss comic because it's so true it hurts my sides XD

Before anyone asks, I had companions in Skyrim killed not by bandits, giants, werewolves, dragons, or any creature / humanoid ... it was through glitches. I remember having that lost Skyrim Dog (the one you find) follow me around for quite some time. He's usually essential, unable to die unless you attack / kill him so yeah.

Well when I fast traveled to the Throat of the World, apparently my Dog was in midair where Paarthurnax spawns at when you first meet him. Falling from such height instantly killed my dog, such as how Mammoths tend to fall from the sky sometimes for no reason. I was so disappointed in Bethesda, I just deleted my character and told myself never again would I have a Dog companion with me.

So yeah this comic was freaken priceless. Erin's last panel of dialogue was golden cause I can relate LOL.
You know, I've played a lot of Fallout 3 (Had to borrow my friends copy tho >.>) and i never once got Dogmeat for this exact reason.
I just never saw the point in companions until they redid the system in New Vegas so they don't instantly die for no reason.
That and Rex was WAAAAAAAAAAY cooler then Dogmeat and doesn't die to everything nearly as easily!

Cyborgs are always cooler :D
OH! :D Do you think we can get our dog in Fallout 4 cyberized?

That would be awesome.

Also, I doubt they'll kill him off. At most they may have something like they did with ED-E in New Vegas where you had to pick if she died to stop the nuclear launch, or if you aimed it at either the NCR or the Legion.

I shot the Legion. ;p

...ED-E was female? News to me

Still, ED-E didn't actually die, it was technically a clone of his that died which the military base in the Divide created.

Well, the way you say ED-E's name kind of determines that really. She/he is actually an it truthfully.

The guy from the enclave read it as Eddy, so to him ED-E was a male, but I read it as Eddie (the girl equivalent that you say/read a bit differently), so I thought of ED-E as a female.

Ultimately though, it depends on what you think ED-E is. Not like an Eye-bot is very gendered one way or the other, right? xD

Ohhhh...Alright, I just spent a lot of time lurking the Fallout Wikia so I kinda had a bit of a freak-out that I might have missed the one design document that defined ED-E's gender or something XD

I can't imagine playing Fallout 3 without the Dogmeat-has-infinite-health glitch. I remember the one time I tried to get across the wasteland with a bunch of escaped slaves in tow, and after the first encounter I realized this wasn't working out, I couldn't even give them my spare armor and weapons, and looked up the Gamepedia site and found that I can just fast-travel to my destination and wait for them to arrive on their own. Bethesda says "companion", I say "escort mission".

I read this comic, laughed until I was sick, came back four hours later, and it was still g*dd*mn hilarious. And I'm with Lightknight on this: I can't use followers in Bethesda games because I'm one of those weirdos who cares about the safety of his serfs.
