This game actually offends me. (I didn't think it possible, but there it is!)
It really looks like it was developed by a buncha 12-15 year olds! I expect this from someone's nerdy kid brother who eats paste, not from a company which actually expects to make money.

spot on the money, a bit of machoism is all well and good it just needs to have a better game to hang on .... which is exactly what I would say about the Duke Nukem univers
This is to the reviewers... please tell me... compare to Duke 3D, is this one better? compare to the old game? why/why not? (assume that it came out in 2004... what would be the review like?) just want to know... because this IS a cryo game after all...
I'm not entirely sure what everyone was expecting from Duke Nukem Forever...It was never going to be a ground breaking experience of unimaginable excellence. It was just going to be Duke reworked for today. DNF is just a spiffy reworking of Duke3D. Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. It's stupid, it's pointless, you shoot stuff. That's all duke nukem has ever been. Why would it change now?
Though yes. I will admit that no, this game doesn't deserve a 10, 9, or even an 8 going off a 10 point scale. (Though, maybe it does deserve a 7-8 because for some reason the community that actually pays attention to score feels 7-8 means average and 5 means bad. People are weird.) I am convinced that a lot of people reviewing were just completely expecting a different game. That's actually understandable. Expecting something and then playing something else can completely mess up any valid opinions you may have been able to form. That's happened to me quite a bit. Even happened to me on Fallout 3 [Though I did put it down for 3 days, came back, and liked it now that I had time to comprehend what I was actually going to be playing. This isn't quite applicable to all scenarios).
Anywho.
Point being. I had fun with the game. I admit to not beating it yet but I haven't come across anything that would be considered bad... The amount of jumping puzzles is slightly bothersome but I've yet to have any trouble completing them due to pure simplicity.
My only regret is that I realize I could have gotten it for free (someone would have used their code on our little staff steam account). Not that I don't enjoy the game (as I've said already. Yay for lots of parenthesis!) I'm just always willing to play things for free.

1. While useless. It's mostly just to make a point. The amount of interactivity is pure blasphemy compared to games that you should expect it from.

3. There's actually no explanation for that one. They just needed something you could see duke doing. IE taking steroids to punch harder. Drinking beer makes you tougher which admittedly makes a little bit of sense. Drink enough and you won't feel a thing. Not sure the one beer thing, maybe has a large alcohol content? I figure it's just to let you know you're under the effect still.
4. Yes Russ. Sometimes when you drink certain substances you're more prone to belching. How dare they! Really no logical reasoning on my end for this one. Just a silly complaint.
5. I can't voice on how they wanted it to work, but what I gather is when you get hurt, your ego goes down. So you need to hide to help motivate yourself back up. This one isn't a defense of that complaint, just my take on it. Better than saying you're recharging your health though... even if you are.
6. Eh. Nothing on this one. You only have one time to do that in the game, but prior to this you already see those two ...doing...something?....so looking up the skirt isn't really that big of a deal by that point.
7. What you draw is your choice, not a part of the game. If you want to draw a cock go ahead. Hell, you can do that with any game that leaves bullet holes. I personally try to draw smiley faces when I go down in Gears but I've never been able to fully finish one. It's difficult to get right due to the consistent blood trail.
8. This one actually pissed me off. What's wrong with you? In the game they're crying and now and again asking for their daddy or wanting to be let go. Not moaning. I never heard a single moan. If you think crying = moaning then OK that's cool. I don't judge people on their fetish's but ...argh. Yeah I'm just stopping myself from going on an unrelated side rant. Though yes. You can kill them. In fact you should. They're not human by this point (if you don't realize that duke will repeat it until you do) and they're in pain with aliens growing inside them. You know...like Aliens.... Killing them is humane and irrelevant to what age you are....Wait a second. If you were 12 you would find amusement out of killing woman that were kidnapped, held against their will, impregnated, and eventually having aliens burst out of 'em? Maybe FOX is right...video games are ruining our youth.
9. Not much on this one either. Just interactivity at work haha. Though they did joke about that in the loading screens. I also admit I never actually noticed these when I was playing. I guess I was just too concentrated on actually playing the game and not looking for random things to bash on. Badumtish! (But no really. I just didn't pay attention.)
10. The strip club level, and here's the main spoiler, is a dream sequence. In fact I see no issue with this part at all. The entire thing, excluding when I stopped to play air hockey with a random dude for a while, took me maybe 5-10 minutes. That's it. Most of that was just exploring and interacting with random nonsense. It's an extremely brief sequence with really not much to do as far as usual strip club activities go. The actual dancing is just her coming in, shaking for a couple seconds, getting closer then you wake up. This is duke's dreams and what he wants the world to go back to. If someone could remember what the game that had you go into peoples dreams to see what they really wanted that would be great, because I forget the name. Point being, that's exactly what this segment is. He has a dream, "roleplays" that he's taking orders to get the 3 items (popcorn, dildo, condom) and he gets a prize. To be perfectly honest, if I were 12 I'd be more upset at the outcome than amused by it. Being young and not getting to see more and such.

You can understand DNF level greatness when you realize the Concept Art for those levels was made by the ever amazing Feng Zhu.

And I READ the review. That doesn't change the fact that he should be showing me where the game went wrong rather than telling me how it went wrong. Using the video supplement to rail against the game's toilet humour is a great deal less important than showing me why I should take his recommendation and not buy the game.Echo136 said:

Well, personally, I enjoyed the game. Not something I plan on playing a month or two from now, but all in all, you more or less expected it to be the way it is. Not the best game, but one with offensive, crude humor. My main complaints, is that the multiplayer is horrible, I sat at the "quick game" load screen for about five minutes before it found a game, with only two people in it, and the berserk pigcops can cover an impossible jumping distance in a literal blink of an eye. For a game that's been tempered 12 years, it should have been much, much more. A shame, but the game's ending hints at a sequel, but with how it was received... Time will tell.
