I can feel for them. The internet cable at my neighbourhood was cut about 8 times already by overzealous diggers, mostly the crews that fix roads or water pipes - fun times. That's what happens when 80% of work time is drinking vodka.

Yeah - fiber-optics may be awesome but they are not infinite Chuck Norris awesome. I don't see how a single fiber optic cable could supply one entire country, much less three of them. At least not without some serious lag. Talk about trying to shove 20 pounds of shit in a 2 pound bag...
You grossly underestimate the bandwidth of a fibre optic cable connection. There are only like a dozen cables between Europe and North America, each a few centimeters thick. There is absolutely no reason why a single cable thin enough to cut with a spade couldn't supply three million connections.
Hmm... Sorry. I'm not sure of the specifics. I just knew that fiber-optics were much, much better than regular old cables. Don't they use light to transfer data instead of electricity? If so, how come she cut a copper cable? Or did I misread the article as well? Ah, it has been a bad day for my brain, I'm sorry for my ineptness at the moment.
She didn't cut a copper cable, she was LOOKING for them. Then she found a fiber-optic cable instead.

Meh, iron and crap like fiber-optic cables spawn near ground level. She needs to go deeper[sub][sub][sub][sub]INCEPTION[/sub][/sub][/sub][/sub] if she wants gold or diamonds.
I'll admit it. I laughed.

In Soviet Russia ... there IS no publicly accessible internet, as it would have nothing to do with such decadent capitalist luxuries or tools for civil freedom, and, oh it broke up before half the posters on this forum were even born.

Sorry for being a killjoy, but, come on. This shit is like something happening in Dresden or Leipzig and you break out the East Germany quips (or bring up the Yugo if there's an event in Sarajevo). There's a statute of limitations on how out of date your comedy routines can be. They're all seperate countries now. Russia INVADED part of Georgia last year FFS. If you saw Armenia on the eurovision a couple years back you'd swear they were more arabic than anything else.

Besides, Yakov Smirnoff, bloody hell, you gonna start with All Your Base Are Belong To Old Georgian Lady next? This cable doesn't have beautiful plumage, it's bleedin' demised? :D

PS this sort of thing is depressingly common anyway ... cables are rarely well protected, even to the level of just being put inside waterproof, heavyweight plastic or ceramic pipes or their routes being proplerly documented.
There's building work going on my ofice site at the moment, and the number of times we alone have lost net or phone connection because of a digger or workman's spade going somewhere that was supposedly "clear" but actually contained fibre is totally beyond a joke (this is in a fairly civilised bit of the UK no less). We're just waiting until someone gets fried by a 415 or 1000v power cable.

I think that it's quite the faulty system to have ONE wire which can be cut by a spade to supply the internet to such a large scale of people. I'm surprised that they had it running for as long as they did with all those landslides that were mentioned. She probably did them a favor by showing them the fragility of their system.

Problably creepers blew on the cable before weakening its protection?

In soviet russia, internet cable digs you?

Nah, thats not good....
None of them are good :p

It would be bullshit to give the poor woman 3 years in prison though. Come on, you kind of think the authorities aren't stupid enough to make a fiber optics cable that millions of people depend on breakable by an old woman with a shovel...

The most awesome granny ever. The fact that 75 year old people have to DIG for whatever to be able to buy food makes me a very sad panda :(
