Ellen Page: Naughty Dog Ripped Off My Likeness

I don't think it is fair to say that they ripped off her likeness. I didn't even see the similarity until someone pointed it out. I mean that have similar builds and hair, but beyond that they are pretty much different. I looked around and saw many comparison side by side pictures. Ellen Paige has a rounder face, a more defined jaw line, thinner lips, her eyes are closer together, she has fairer skin with far less freckles, different eye color, a smaller and pointier nose, and a much more defined brow and forehead. Even before the changes were made I don't think they looked nearly so close as to say that they ripped off her likeness. What probably happened is they created a character then realized that it looked a bit too close to Ellen Paige and changed it so they really don't look so similar. I would never mistake Ellie for a digital Ellen Paige.

She does look similar, but she doesn't sound anywhere near the same.

I think Ellen Page is just trying to get publicity for Beyond.. and whatever else she's doing.

Ellen Page is the ONLY person on earth who is a Caucasian Female who is aged 26 with the face of a 14 year old child and brown hair and brown eyes.

No other person on earth fits this description at all. You would have to go into UNCHARTED! territories to find undiscovered civilizations where there might be a possibility of anyone that remotely matches that description. Or you could use google and find about a million images.

Damn woman, chill out with the ego. Not everyone looks or is intended to look like you. Unless you plan to sue all of your lookalikes and force them to have plastic surgery you can't copyright your face. That's why things like Elvis impersonators can exist, they don't have to wear a DMCA bag over their heads to avoid using you "likeness".
It's not about ego. It's business.

You can't use an image of Miranda Kerr to advertise your product without her permission.

It really unfortunate that Miss Page has a game that is being released around the same time as Last of Us. For most part, she isn't making a big fuss out of it. Nonetheless, it's best such "coincidences" could be avoided in the future.
You can. If it's not her. You can if it is a character who is not named Ellen Page. You know why you can do that?

Because similarities will always exist.

Nathan Drake? His face is somewhere out there in life action. Do I hear him crying about someone using a model that looks kinda like him? No I don't. Ask yourself this. Why doesn't she sue? Because she can't. Otherwise she would have. You cannot copyright a face. As long as you don't pretend it IS the person the face looks like you have free range to do whatever the fuck you want!

Had they put on the box "See Ellen Page as Ellie in The Last of Us. Then she would have had a case. Now all she can do is say "I disapprove" which she can go do in the corner, quietly removed from the rest of us.

Celebrity status doesn't suddenly give you rights that other people don't have. You cannot cut in line at the Burger King for example. If that one sounds familiar, congratulations you also spend to much time on the internet.

For the longest time I actually was a bit confused between "The Last of Us" and "Beyond Two Souls" because both of these "Elen Paige" characters would appear in every screen shot and cover article... I do think Naughty Dog went a bit too far, not just in copying the likeness of the actor, but in a game that was going to be released so close to this other one.

Man, where the hell are the people in this thread getting the idea that she's going to sue or making a big deal about it. She said this during an AMA(Ask Me Anything). It was a response to someone asking her about it. So much knee-jerk in this thread.
saying you don't appreciate that a fictional character looks and sounds like you is also pretty "knee-jerk".
and yes it could easily be seen as entitled as well because the way she phrased it definitely sounds as if she thinks she deserves something because "they ripped off" her likeness.

also maybe you should try not looking like such a universal teenage white girl, did you think of that ellen page?

To me she doesn't sound like she feels she deserves something so much as she feels it's inconsiderate to model a character so closely on someone without asking them first. When your entire career is more less based on a combination of your looks, voice, and how you portray yourself, someone using you as a basis for something, especially while you're working for someone else and both groups are advertising at the same time and both using the you based character heavily in said advertisements? I can understand how that might be a bit annoying for an actor. The fact that several people in this thread thought she was doing work on The Last of Us really cements that I think.

So I wouldn't call that sort of reaction knee-jerk, especially if it's only voiced when directly asked about the situation. People hearing the reaction and jumping to law-suits and entitlement? Definitely knee-jerk.

I'm with all the people who thought Ellen Page was working on the game from the very first moment the character was revealed, and it confused me greatly to see Beyond advertised as having Ellen Page in it when the Last of Us didn't.

Also maybe it's because of my position stated above, but I just don't see any of the resemblances to other actresses that people have been pointing out.

This reeks of The Escapist/the press blowing an off-handed Reddit comment way out-of-proportion.
Maybe the wording wasn't exactly the best but it doesn't sound like Ellen Page is threatening legal action or is particularly pissed off that Naughty Dog may have used her likeness.
I don't think they're blowing it out of proportion at all. They used her exact words, "ripped off," gave a bit of context, and that's it. I don't think it says anywhere about any threatened legal action.

Who is Ellen paige? And im being serious i have never heard her name before, never seen a film shes in, atleast none where she was impactful enough to make me look up her name.

Though i have seen her face thousands of times because she looks like a brown-haired, young faced woman, so like a fair portion of the worlds women.

Can you copyright your likeness? I am not familiar with the laws about this. Do celebrities go around suing lookalikes?
Yes, your likeness is sorta protected in the United States. The most famous case of this is Back to the Future. Crispin Glover played George McFly in the movie, when they went to do the sequels. He did not sign on. Not only did they replace him with another actor, they used prosthetics that made the other actor look like Crispin Glover.
Right I understand that in the case of live actors but in the case of something like this. I feel like it just isn't even close enough to warrant anything.

I quite like Ellen Page, maybe I've just watched too much of her but her and Ellie look nothing alike to me.

"The new look Ellie that was in in the retail version looks younger with a "slimmer" face."
I like thin, so yay.

As for likeness... Most humans look like others, so what do you expect with photorealism in graphics?

She was the lead in "Juno", the kid in "Hard Candy" and the designer in "Inception". She was nominated for an Oscar with "Juno".

I think she needs to calm down. "Her likeness"

I'm sure she was being completely serious about "not appreciating" the supposed use of her likeness, but I don't want to see something like this going too far.

It strikes me as a lazy move by Naughty Dog... like they had a placeholder concept... "She'll be something like Ellen Page as a young teenager, we'll call her Ellie for now"... and then never changed that bit of it, despite fleshing out and changing the character in other ways.
