In many instances Canada has more restrictive copyright law than the U.S.

I love Canada, I can download pirated material and not take any flak! (crimanally of course). Canada RULES!
That's not exactly how it works. If they catch you, you will get in trouble. It's just that the RCMP doesn't have the Orwellian Powers that the police in the states do to catch Pirates.
and i'm pretty sure they can't touch you if you show a box of it and a receipt

IE we can buy a game, then download a possibly superior pirate version legit.
or we ourselves could, POSSIBLY (I HAVE NO DEFINITE KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE ON THIS SUBJECT) crack a game for our own use...

I demand revision of the article, Argentina put above Brazil on the watch for piracy! Unaceptable!
(Any fellow brazilian will get the joke)
I think you'd have to be brazilian to get the joke.

For instance, I have no fucking idea.
Well that's what I said, for a bit of context, you find street sellers with pirated movies/games/softwares on nearly every corner of a major city, and so open it's not hard to find a police officer buying from them (this makes me so sad when I see).

And there's a brazilian thing for Argentina, it's like our nemesis country, much like an australian being called british thing.

This is what happens when a country allow privateers unfettered access to their harbours. The Canadian Dominion's continued efforts to destabilise the high seas must be opposed.

It's all good my brazilian amigo. No good joke deserves an explanation. Just enjoy your joke as only a brazilian can, I'm sure it was hilarious :)

I think the main problem they have with Canadian Copyright law is the fact that here you have the right to Copy What You Have Purchased.

That's right, in Canada you are legally entitled to make digital back ups of anything you have legally purchased, be it movies, music, videogames what have you. It's why we have a Tax on Writable Media (Blank CD's, DVD's etc.).

I can understand the concern though, Canada is very lax in implementing any sort of laws to punish those who share their "Legal Copies" because it starts to look disturbingly Orwellian. I'm pretty sure a lot of it is blocked by Canadian Privacy Laws, which I think are partially what forced Facebook to implement more user control over what information is shared/viewable to the public.

I don't really know what the solution is though, I'm fighting our bad rep in my own way by... not pirating. I mean if I REALLY want to know if an Album is worth purchasing I can use Youtube to listen to the tracks or I can just BUY them off of iTunes... is 99 cents so much?

Where is the pic in this articles from? It looks a bit Commandoes-y to me.

OT: Yes, how DARE Canada act like an independant western nation!
It's from Baldur's Gate II. The Dock area of the main city, whose name I am completely spacing on right now.

Dunno why the pic in the article is from the best game ever made, but I enjoyed it.
because it's showing the base of the Shadow Thieves, and that's what the ESA thinks we are in canada (and, if you read this thread, you'd be inclined to agree, it's pretty dumb really I suspect there may be some suspensionhammers coming down)

BG2 was also made by Bioware, which at the time was an entirely Canadian Company, so it's doubly applicable!

Horrah!

I still count Bioware as a canadian company. Main base of operations is in alberta, and the "WIN A TRIP TO BIOWARE" contest is open to canadian citizens. That's canadian enough for me.

ROFLMAOCANADA. For some reason I'm stopping to care about all these piracy articles ... Especially ones like these where nothing is being done in the end except "put someone on a list" ... Effective ... not really.
lol, it's not even that much. Canadia is apparently already on the list, this entire thing is about "keeping us on the list".

Now I'm wondering how long we've been on the list already, and what difference it's made..

Assuming none.

Yes, we are oh so evil, always plotting how to pirate copyrighted material. We even walk around with eye patches and parrots on our shoulders, occasionally muttering "Arrr, eh?" as we travel across the snowy terrain in our dog sleds bearing the Jolly Roger flag.

True enough, I have friends in Edmonton who actually KNOW a lot of the Bioware folks [they went to the Bioware X-mas party and everything, it had Dragon Age themed drinks ;)], as well the lead animator for Mass Effect 2 went to the same High School as me and was friends with my friends brother.

Man, my dogsled broke the other day, you know how hard it is to get across this vast tundra hauling that flag around?

OT: Let 'em keep us on their list, seriously it's obviously had no impact as of yet
