(EDIT: Actually, I do have a padded gel pad on the desk with my gaming rigs - I like the wrist rest. Doesn't need the pad itself, though.)

Yes, you can call it a waste of money, but IT HAS IT'S OWN CARRYING CASE! And that is awesome.

Free neoprene one from Amazon. I'm using an $8 buyincoins mouse on it too, which, when I got it, I surmised was a higher resolution than my Logitech MX510 (800dpi), but now I'm not totally convinced.

I like Rail Arena, so I could use a high-res mouse, but with the games I've got lined up at the moment, not soon. I've also considered getting an aluminium mouse-pad.
