I'm frontline customer support. Basically I'm the one who gets to tell people who ring up why their delivery isn't coming or why we can't help with their items that are under guarantee after a third party has deemed the item to have been misused.

I've got to say, though, the majority of our customers are very nice and more than reasonable. I've had people offer my whole team tickets to sporting events which, sadly, we can't accept. On the other hand I had one guy who said "You [Name] are a wanker and [Company name] are a load of useless cunts."

Pay's good though, and the people are good too.

I work in my state's Veterans Affairs office, helping them and their family members file claims with the Federal VA. We help them figure out what benefits are available to them based on active service, and then help them complete the applications and supporting documentation.
That sounds like it occasionally gets very ugly. Like, "pissed off veteran with less benefits than he expected" ugly
Eh, not as often as you'd think. The majority of our clients are pretty cool, even when told something they don't want to hear about their available benefits. Every once in a while we get a person who comes in, pre-offended by everything, and they act all entitled and arrogant, and try and talk down to us. But it really is a rare thing. Like once a month, if that.

Thankfully, very few of our vets have the opinion that since they are a veteran, they have the right to just be an entitle asshole whenever they want.

I actually enjoy the job a lot. Just about every job I've had has been some kind of customer service, because I've learned about myself that I like helping people. My other jobs were usually fairly dull kinds of customer service, (book store clerk, phone customer service IT guy, etc), and while I did enjoy helping people in those jobs, it was a very.....surface level help I guess you could say. Not much depth to it. Like I'm glad I was able to get your satellite tv working again dude, but it's just a football game, and you didn't need to yell at me for 10 minutes while we got it fixed. Watch the replay online or something dude, chill out.

This job however, I'm actually able to help people with significant forms of benefits. Medical coverage, financial assistance, education benefits for themselves and their dependents. Stuff that actually makes their lives better. So yeah, the occasional asshole is fine, it doesn't offset the rest of what I get to do.

My official title I believe is Control Panel Fitter, but I feel electromechanic fits the bill better.
It's always hard to explain exatly what I do, so I often end up saying "I build stuff that controls other stuff"

Basically I build the control cabinets that controls processes. Those processes can be anything from a small pump station to a whole water or sewer treatment plant, bridges or industrial machinery.
I have a rather large workshop where I build them, and they can be anything from a small 10x10x10cm box, to closet like cabinets 2m tall and several meters long weighing up to 1 ton. I then fill them with parts, wire everything up and ship it out, kinda like making a huge computer that has only 1 spesific job.

It's basically just a job I have because I don't really know what I wanna do yet. It pays well, its nice and safe and I am really good at it, witch leads to a ridiculous freedom of what I can get away with.

From a cursory glance, I count almost a dozen people in this thread who should have what I'd consider "good pay". It all depends on where you set the bar, though. I consider mine to be pretty good, amounting to about $27/hour (I get paid by month rather than hour, so it's actually $4725/month). I'm fairly young and newly employed, though, so it's in the bottom bracket of the convention. I have a senior coworker (same title) who makes about $6500/month.

Mechanic at a nuke power plant. The actual work is mostly easy, but there is just so. much. PAPERWORK!!!
I do get to do some pretty cool nerdy stuff though. Cherenkov radiation is a very pretty blue, and got to be the last human in infinity million years to touch the fuel rods before they get all glowy and dead-causing.

I'm a caregiver so a lot of my day is free to do as I wish (with how the state pays me and determines my hours which are bullshit) but I also do a lot more than the hours I'm given and shit because it's stuff that HAS to get done but I'm also looking for a second job because I NEED to get out of this house.

I am a full-time graduate student, so technically I should be writing my thesis. I also have to be a teaching assistant for a couple of classes. I enjoy doing it a lot. I will be lecturing twice next week actually.

I'm aware that most of the people here are in their 20's, but what do we all really do for a living, when we're not playing videogames? This isn't for any real reason, I just wanted to satisfy my curiosity.
I really wish I was in my 20's again!

Phew, third page, means no one will read this post!
Police officer here.
Have work until the end of the year, then it's uncertain were I get to continue working, if I can find a job at some station.
Hopefully the unemployment won't be to long, if it's over 6 months I guess I'll try and get back into school and study something new that I find interesting.

I work as a veterinary microbiologist and biochemist. The reason that I have two roles is because I only work for a relatively small lab so many of the staff double up roles in different departments, it does mean that it is difficult to get bored.

Just left a job where I had been providing Software QA analyst duties for a retail website . Corporate restructuring put the kaibosh on that so now I'm manning a tech support line for a telematics company. It's good work and it keeps me from having to walk Cletus Q. Bumblescump through deleting his browser history before his wife comes home.

Currently looking to get my Scrum Master certification to supplement my QA experience.

I make less than $200 a month, but considering where I live (out in the sticks, where everything is cheaper) and the fact that I don't pay rent and utilities (the school where I work takes care of that, plus the apartment I live in), and my parents take care of a lot of the financial burden (they fill my car's tank, pay my mobile phone's bill and give me lots of food to take with me), I'm actually doing pretty well. (That said, I do try to remain as independent as possible: I've allotted a lot of my budget towards groceries so I'm less dependent on my parents for food, and I only make the drive back to their house once a month, if that)

It'll probably get higher once I earn my Master's degree and PhD, but until then I'm doing pretty well.

I'm a "First line support analyst" that takes less than 8 calls a day on average and bug the 2nd line team(those guys scare me) with 3 of them. Piece of piss. It's boring as fuck but it's easy and sometimes the people on the other end of the phone are hilarious. Had a Michael Caine sound a like yesterday, amazing.

I'm an audio engineer.

I work into the witching hour and sometimes I have early morning stuff the next day. Stumbling into work never felt so appropriate when that happens.

At the moment, I'm doing odd gigs. Some theatre stuff (which is a little slow), a church gig (it pays the bills), and some recording stuff if I can find the work. It's a lot of high stress work and a lot of 'hurry up and wait' work as well, but I enjoy it. Never a dull moment. :D

Teach college-level history courses for a private university. . . . .but I'm staring at being unemployed in the near future.

Worst part about that is I didn't do anything to get fired or pushed out the door. We had a change over in management and the new folks are weeding out everyone who was hired by the previous directors. Guilt by association.

I am looking at various schools in the area to see if I can get work there, but I suspect I will have to go back into "whatever I can find for the paycheck" style work.

*sigh*

The pay wasn't great, but I've found that I LOVE teaching history. I love history and my students always seemed to remark on the teacher evaluations that I was one of the first instructors they had had in history that made history interesting. How in the world can someone as boring as me make history interesting? It's already amazing stuff!

I am a systems admin at a chemical plant, though I've only had the job for about a year now. Before that I temped as a desktop support tech for a number of years. It's pretty decent work, with days being up and down as far as how busy I am, and a pretty good wage.
