In PHANTASMAGORIA: A PUZZLE OF THE FLESH!!! a guy gets his hands pierced with pancils, mouth stapled shut with an industrial stapler and finally cut from stem to stern with a box cutter. All live action!!
WHY L!!!!!!
light's death was very stasfying to me. (probbly i live seeing the antagonist getting his, especaly if he kills my favorite character.)
i love gannon's death in Whind Waker.
the game started out as cute and childesh then got darker, and darker, and darker untill finaly gannon gets a sword planted and then watered in his brain.
loved it.
Anyway, Light was the protagonist!
You were supposed to root for him, not against him.

L's death is my favorite main character's death. Light wins, L solves the case before he dies, everyone wins. Light's death was just sad because of how ungraceful it is. I really wish Light would have died with some dignity.
Truthfully, by the end of Death Note, I really wanted Light to be stopped. And it was rather satisfying to see him freak out the way he did. After all his deeds, all his boasting he was a God, in the end he was just as scared and flawed as any other normal human being.
Ugh I am having a serious brain freeze but I know someone died in Red vs Blue and it really got me going... urg who was it? Ohhhh Church! That was amazing

AHAHAHA! Love that scene.
Church-"I just want you to know...I hate you. I always hated you the most."
Tucker-"Yeah, I know. Now hurry up and die, you prick."
Church-"Okay. HURRRR...BLEH."
And of course the great line, "You shot Church, you team killing fucktard!"
Death Note - L dying, although it was kind of pointless when his boring Doppelganger shows up to keep the plot rolling
Final Fantasy 7 - Aeris dying. Pretty common knowledge now but shocked me at the time
Layer Cake - When the main character dies at the end, after all he's been through and just gets shot because of the one tiny loose-end he didn't wrap up. Just as he was about to get out of the crime business too! I mean I guess the point is 'you can never get out', but for such a small point...Ah, it caught me off guard for sure
This is token text. So if you don't open any spoilers then you at least can be safe in the knowledge I wrote something.

"Favorite" death scene? Well, I don't actually like death scenes unless something really cool is going on. I can appreciate tragic deaths, but that doesn't mean I like them.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, but you can't forget
Like this...well, borderline. It was an incredibly awesome scene, but the actual death caught me absolutely off-guard.
Anyway, my favorite death scene off the top of my head is probably
Shirou Emiya's death leading into the Heaven's Feel Normal Ending. He's already dying slowly from the power of Archer's arm. But starting with him and Rider killing Dark Saber, to his breaking Sakura of Angra Mainyu's influence...
...to his epic fistfight against the also-dying Kotomine... A fistfight between two men who have only minutes to live, each trying to either kill or simply outlast the other. Shirou manages the latter with a sudden memory of Sakura and a subsequent come-from-behind beatdown, letting him avoid death long enough for Kotomine to kick off...
...to his final act before his brain is destroyed, projecting Excalibur and destroying the heart of the corrupted Holy Grail, he dies a truly badass death.
The last parts covered with <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNvsGRzw-ys>very appropriate music.
Of course, then you have to deal with the aftermath of that Ending. Specifically, the depressing effect on Sakura.
I think death scenes in games/movies/novels should always leave a lasting impact on the viewer. If it didn't, then I feel that the character wasn't developed enough and a connection was never establish. To me, a memorable death scene should solicit some form of strong emotions, enough to cause you to scream at the scene or consider boycotting the game/book/movie. For me, I consider the death in FF7 memorable, but the death in the last Matrix movie pointless.
One of most memorable death for me is in Code Geass when Leloch dies. It showed that he never deviated from his ultimate goal, the music set the perfect mood, and his sister humanized him for all his past actions.
The other most memorable death came from David Eddings' book series The Elenium when Kurik. I didn't touch the book for a week after I read the death chapter.
For me it had to be when Wash was killed in Serenity. It pissed me off so much I nearly broke my friends TV it made me so mad but I will not soon forget it.
EDIT - embedding the movie didn't work, so have a link instead [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCH0b-0xymk]
It's so spectacular because it's so totally out of character for the rest of the game. I actually cried first time I saw this. I then regrouped and went on to kill every arsehole that wasn't a member of the Saints in Stillwater.
God I love that movie. That's one of the few movies I can sit down and watch it, beginning to end, and then start it all over again. And none of my friends has seen it, or will even watch it.
This movie was also when I discovered that Christian Bale > Hugh Jackman. Just so not open to discussion.
Spoilers for Day of the Dead, Brain Dead/Dead Alive, Suikoden II, and Mother 3.
Day of the Dead: The death of Captain Rhodes. Positively brutal and gut-wrenching...CHOKE ON IT!
Brain Dead/Dead Alive: Too many to count...the urinating on the tombstone scene, the kung fu priest scene, the fist through the mouth scene...oh, and the lawnmower!
Suikoden II: NANAMI!! ...Okay, she didn't really die, but it was heartbreaking at the time.
