All Flesh Must Be Eaten, gotta love the Pen and Paper RPG. If you've never heard of this one look it up. It's about zombies and it's awesome.

It's also interesting to note that it came out originally in 1999, before the modern zombie craze started.

The Call of Cthulhu RPG is good too.

I'm a big pen and Paper Rpg guy, although I do love the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.
Pity it took 3 pages for someone to mention a real role playing game. My hat to you. The Cthulhu pen and paper is pretty brutal.

I'm going to go with Pen and paper Shadowrun myself.

But, since I feel the thread intends games I'll also offer this...

Shadowrun on the genesis was amazing. Vampire Bloodlines is stupid good. Fallout 3 is...pretty good I guess if you're into that sort of thing though the first 2 are better by miles.KoToR is and will probably always be amazing. Morrowind is better than Oblivion. Xenogears was amazing for it's time, though I don't think it stood the test of time. You could write a thesis on what made Planescape Torment so amazing. Despite what I consider the worst rpg engine of all time I guess the BG games are good. FF6 crushes all other FF's. 7? Ha. The Etrian Oddysey games for the DS are some of the most brutal rpgs I've played since nethack.

Nethack.

Fuck, did I forget anything?

Suikoden II, can´t believe no one else mentioned this RPG earlier.
Ninja'd. Love that game so, so much. Why does it have to be so expensive now? And why don't we get the PSP version Japan got or get the game on the PS3 store like the first one?

I'm gonna go cry a little now.

The Bioware game + remakes

Pokemon is definitely an RPG.

Zelda is not. I don't know why there's even an argument about this.

Oblivion... would have said Twilight Princess but I can't stand pausing the game every damn second to find out what the hell I have to do to get this arbitrary door open.

So yeah, definetly Oblivion.

so many people, so much ignorance and bad taste.
So why don't you share your thoughts?

For me, it'd have to be Morrowind, as, at the time, it was completely insane. It's strange that Oblivion, which is better than this game in many ways, lacks the atmosphere that practically MADE this one.

P&P Cthullu is the best if you have a really good dm. If you like anime a good P+P is Big eyes small mouth.

Games wise, there are tons. Final Fantasy series is good but not my favourite - Star Ocean 3, Grandia 2. Lost Oddeysey!!!!!

Zelda is not. I don't know why there's even an argument about this.
[1]It has all the elements of an JRPG, so it is a JRPG.
[2]It's got a pre-designed character, generic enemies, and [3]it used to have a leveling system.

It's an JRPG *nods*
1. All the elements of JRPG? It doesn't fall into to category of RPG in general or even Action RPG. A game is an RPG if it has heavy emphasis on leveling/stat building and unlocking abilities and skill.
An upgradable health meter and inventory items don't make a game an RPG, or else there are pretty much no other genres.

2. What do you even mean by pre-designed? 'Cause that sounds like something all games have, with the exception of customizable player avatars/characters.

3. Used to have? As in one game in the series that deviated greatly from the original concept. No, that does not make the whole series RPG. Never played Zelda II, but it itself might be a Action RPG.

Anyway, just read this please...
Characteristics:

Generally, the player controls a small number of game characters, usually called a party, and achieves victory by completing a series of quests. Players explore a game world, while solving puzzles and engaging in tactical combat. A key feature of the genre is that characters grow in power and abilities, and characters are typically designed by the player. RPGs rarely challenge a player's physical coordination, with the exception of action role-playing games.

These games usually have a highly developed story and setting, which is divided into a number of quests. Players control one or several characters by issuing commands, which is performed by the character at an effectiveness determined by that character's numeric attributes. These attributes increase each time a character gains a level, and a character's level goes up each time the player accumulates a certain amount of experience.

Role-playing video games borrow their genre terminology, settings and game mechanics found in early role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. However, at least as of 2006, computers do not yet have the power to simulate nonplayer characters with the skill of a human game master. The behavior of these characters is instead hand-coded using scripts. Thus, role-playing video games borrow more of the core mechanics from early role-playing games without as much of the role-playing activity and character freedom.

When compared to other gaming genres, role-playing games have a tendency to become more in-depth and complicated because of their levelling and skill systems. For example, the Pokémon series of games has a vast economy of users who actually use mathematical calculations and various other obscure, hidden methods to give their Pokémon team an advantage over others. This likely was originally used by the game creators to support the shallower levelling. This behavior is most commonly seen in online battle veterans.
Key word here is a skill and leveling system.

That's RPGs, yes.
Not JRPGs.
JRPGs have pre-designed characters (yes, a lot of games have this but all JRPGs have that. See Oblivion or Fallout 3, customizable. they are RPGs).
JRPGs doesn't need to have leveling systems (See The World Ends With You).
Nor skill systems (Again, The World Ends With You)
RPG covers JRPG, being the most generic sub-genre alongside WRPG (if it's even really a subgenre). The "pre-designed character" must be something you have read in an article talking about the differences between typical J- and WRPGs, because it's however completely irrelevant if you want to know whether a game is any kind of RPG, since it's by no means typical to only that genre.

You say I'm talking about a different thing, but you are already yourself trying to decide which sub-genre of RPG Zelda belongs to, without considering if it even fills the criteria of RPG in general first. It can't be JRPG without being RPG.

And maybe, you know, The World Ends With You is not an RPG? I have not played it or heard of it that much. However, I recall there being equipment managment of some sort, which could be the game's stat and skill system depending how it's done. I can't really say without knowing more.

Zelda is not a JRPG. It doesn't fill the criteria of an RPG and the only reason people like to think it's one is because it has similar fantasy setting to many JRPGs.

Western RPG: Oblivion. A thousand times Oblivion. I adore that game so much.

JRPG: The Final Fantasy series in the following order: VII, XII, X, (and I've only played bits of the rest so I can't judge them properly).

Either Oblivion if I want to cast spells until something dies or Dragon Age Origins if I want to click something until it dies.
