Exactly why would it take 40 years? Are there just 40 years worth of new FF games you've gotta make before that? I'm not even a huge fan of Final Fantasy, this is coming from a logical standpoint, how the hell would it take 40 years to remake a game!? You're not creating a new one (even still making a new game from scracth, takes at most 3-5 years if everything runs smoothly) A remake should take 2, tops.

Come on Square, I'm sure Final Fantasy VS 31, can be put on hold. Or are you just afraid of the money you'll get? Please do it already, if not for you, for the fans... so they can finally shut up about it. Besides, you really blue balled 'em with that PS3 tech demo, that was just low.

This is idiotic, the entire framework for the story, monsters, combat, materia system, characters.

Hell, the entire game is WRITTEN ALREADY, and it's going to take them 40 years to make it look good!? I don't even care if the graphical update is that substantial, I mostly just want it remade so it is reasonably affordable.

If they can make Advent Children in a reasonable amount of time, they can make a pretty FFVII.

By saying "it would take 40 years we could never do it" They are pretty much saying "Since we use modern graphics now, we will never make a game as extensive as FFVII again because it would take forever" Which sucks, modern graphics shouldn't hurt game design like this.

Not to mention he's clearly lying, this is a load of horse shit.

It might take 40 years.. if it were one developer. With no prior knowledge of video game design.

I mean Jesus Christ, that claim is outrageous. They arent completely redesigning it, its the same story, same characters, just remade. If the Chrono Resurrection [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YELRuYNBRDk] can make an amazing quality remake demo in a couple of years, keep in mind that this is a group of 9 fans making it, then I call bullshit to Square Enix's claim. They could make a Final Fantasy VII remake in a couple, maybe 3 years, but the fact of the matter is they simply don't want to.
It's not outrageous at all, remember, they have to do it all with archaic punch card programming because.......

Yeah, it's fucking outrageous.

I'm just gonna say it's a shame to all parties.

FF7 was one of the most important games of my childhood, and when I think of kids being raised today on FFXIII, it makes me puke at how low Squeenix has sunk. Gamers today are just exposed to mindless corridor shooting action games that only require you to press the X button over and over. There's no depth or atmosphere to games like there used to be.

I'm positive that they could've put out a remake INSTEAD of all the shit they've been doing for the past 5 years because:
1) They definitely have Character animation and voice acting down - Look at FFXIII, that was arguably the only good thing about the game.
2) They definitely have the technology to make big world maps - Look at FFXII.

The fact is, Square doesn't have the mojo anymore, or the magic, or whatever you call it. They're admitting right here that they'll never make a game good enough for me to play again.
An FF7 remake would be great not only for fans, but for new generations of gamers who didn't experience it back in the 90's. Gone is the time when JRPG's were actually respected and gaming required more than just "press X not to die."
I can't help but agree completely with what you just said. I'm actually reminded of the other day when I was playing...you know what? I don't even feel like sarcasm.

First off, how many games rely on one single button? None. Stop belittling the work that developers put into their games. If you don't like shooters that's fine but don't put down the people who make good games or the people who enjoy them to stroke your own ego.

Second, stop getting your "witty comments" from Zero Punctuation. Most people on this site have already heard them, laughed, and moved on. Yahtzee is funny and he occasionally stumbles on to an interesting point about gaming, but his points only naturally occur in jokes. When you try to use them as actual arguments you just sound like a pretentious idiot.

Finally, apologize to anyone who might have actually had their opinion changed by reading your post. Inform them that you are entirely wrong you apologize for misleading them, even as poorly as you did.
Fuck you, it's my opinion and this is me putting my nuts in your mouth

40 years is utter bullshit. If I didn't have anything else going on, I, by myself, could probably remake FFVII in less than 40 years. This includes the time it would take to actually learn the relevant skills, debug, etc. Square is clearly feeding its fans a line of bullshit to shut them up, but it'll probably end up backfiring, and the fanboys will be clamoring about it for the next 40 years.

FFVII was good for its time, but can't we (that is, Square) move on and develop good, new stories anymore? I don't give a flying shit if it uses the latest sweat-and-dust-rendering graphics engine or whatever it is the graphics whores are drooling about nowadays, just give us an epic tale that makes sense but perhaps doesn't quite explain everything about it (not in a plot-hole kind of way, more of a "Just what the hell WAS the Happy Mask Salesman, anyway?" sort of way), and could we please, please not have it include any angsty, whiny bastards? I actually don't even care if the protagonists are all androgynous teenagers, just make them believable people who do have personal problems, but deal with them in a way that doesn't remind us of the people we used to talk to every now and again at school and think "Man up and get over yourself!".

Sorry for the wall o' text, it's just something I had to say.

Just highlighting the part where he mentioned shooters. I'm also being more smug than I'd like to have been. I hope next time someone corrects me, they're right.

Im not half as big a fan of FFVII as most Escapists(in the sense that I don't care if it gets a modern update). But Im still calling complete and utter Bullshit when he says it would take that long.

I see two ways of interpreting this:

1. We don't want to do it, so leave us the fuck alone already!

2. We have replaced quality and gameplay with a slightly interactive movie in our recent games and if we were to try to apply that level of visuals to an actual game, we'd be crushed...

Okay, now they're just making crap up. I wouldn't be surprised if they have just been making excuses this whole time, really, but this is just ridiculous. No way it could take 40 years to complete. Half the work is already done for them! No one wants them to touch the plot, dialogue, or game progression, it would seriously only be a matter of visual design (much of which has already been done for them, since they already have the visual style and map layout), voice recording, and re-localization. It wouldn't at all be 40 years of work.

What? How does that even make sense? They have the script. They have the game design, they have the music, they have all the concept art... honestly, it'd take less than two years tops. What a load of shite.
Yeah, you are saying that because you are working in games industry and released multiple AAA game and also have good knowledge about developing games for different consoles.

Right?

It must be frustrating to be a talented developer, releasing tons of games, and still have a shitload of fans that only want you to re-do something you did over a decade ago...

I think what he's trying to say (before the translation errors) that a Final Fantasy VII remake will not be made.

in your lifetime.

If they were going to make a current gen remake of FFVII I'd rather they started at 1.

[Edit]

if you want to play Final Fantasy VII, you have 2 options: original hard copy disk (hard to come by, have to switch disks) OR Playstation Network ($10 and the internet).

i want to play FFIX. I don't have a hard copy, so I'm waiting for PSN.

I think the main reason it would take so long is because the creators of FFXIII need to first learn how to make FF games, and then they would have to make the actual remake.

I personally think Square should get the stick out of their bum, and either do it or not do it, and stop teasing the fans. Remember the teaser they made right before the release of the PS3, the intro sequence of FFVII in PS3 graphics.

PS: I for one doubt it would take that long to remake FFVII. I mean the whole game is there already, so all they need to do is follow the storyboard and add graphics and voice acting.

PSS: I think a remake of FFVII will suck, because they will change to much of the old charm of the game.

Everyone is concerned over Square game remakes, but what about the old Enix franchises? Terranigma anyone?

Anyways, they need to STFU already. Here's a hint, next time someone asks, just say "No, not happening." and move on. These "news" stories are silly and I'm actually one of those people that would welcome a good remake of that game, but at this point it's just silly that they are still talking about it and not answering with a definite "No."

(Also if they are so adamant about not making it then don't get upset when fans take it upon themselves to do it.)

Just my two pence.
