Things Square Enix needs to do:

1) Remake Chrono Cross or make an alternate sequel. Or do something with the Chrono series already, dammit!
2) Un-Cancel that sequel to FFXII, Fortress.
3) Make a real sequel to FFT
4) Finally finish Versus XIII

So if they can't remake FFVII at this point, then do one of those things! If a remake to wait for the PS4 or whatever, wait for the PS4. Also, Square Enix, stop crippling yourselves with your own technology. Its embarassing. And stop whining about it. Make something else then.

By the way, why can't a sequel to FFVI work? It wouldn't be FFVII, but its as good as you're gonna get. A FFVI remake could actually make the game look like Amano originally made it. I don't like Amano's artwork, but its would make a cool-looking game. That wouldn't need much graphical power - it could be made on the Wii.
Fuck...yes.....Chrono Trigger/Cross fuckin ruled! It occurs to me...why not just re-release FF7? (and chrono cross, oh pls square enix, have mercy!!) I mean, those games are really hard to find a good copy of. Most of the crap on Ebay and whatnot are scratched and dont work properly. Dont you guys think they could make big bucks just by putting them back on shelves?

Look, I loved FFVII, but maybe they just don't want to remake the game. Look at it from their perspective: it's been done, they wanna do something else, something new.

Who here wants to play the same battle/experience/materia system, (same level griding, anyone?) but with upgunned graphics?

Actually, I do, but who else? Be honest.

The longer they make people wait, the more likely that people will lose interest. Then Square will have cheated itself out of millions upon millions of dollars. I'm already beginning to lose interest in a remake, and FFVII has long been one of my all time favorite games. Ridiculous quotes like this from Square just make me lose respect for the company.
How the fuck is it ridiculous? Someone asked them yet again about a VII remake, and they said once again that it's not happening. They should only have had to say that once. If people keep asking, they're going to keep giving the same answer. They're not making people wait, because it's not happening! You're losing interest in something which will never be, for fuck sake.

I seem to be in the minority here, in that I fully support Squenix's decision. FFVII was a fucking massive game for it's time, and to render everything to today's graphics standards, hire enough voice actors to record all the lines for all the npcs, re-record the entire soundtrack (without Nobuo Uematsu!)... it's a headache that the folk at Square don't need, especially for a game that's already been out for over ten years! All that's happening here is the guys at Square are making offhand comments, and everyone is reading far too much into them. "OMG He said it would take 40 years to make a 10 year old game, THAT MEANS ALL NEW GAMES ARE SHIT!!!!1!!!"

FFVII fans need to get over their goddamned sense of entitlement. Stop asking for a remake, and Square will stop talking about it.
It's ridiculous because Square has not come out and said that it will never happen. It's also just a piss poor business decision. People want a remake. The demand is there. It's a guaranteed money maker. The smart thing to do would be to meet that demand and rake in the profits. It's got nothing to do with entitlement. Square is making a poor decision and is essentially mocking its fans by saying a remake would take 40 years to develop.

I'm just gonna say it's a shame to all parties.

FF7 was one of the most important games of my childhood, and when I think of kids being raised today on FFXIII, it makes me puke at how low Squeenix has sunk. Gamers today are just exposed to mindless corridor shooting action games that only require you to press the X button over and over. There's no depth or atmosphere to games like there used to be.

I'm positive that they could've put out a remake INSTEAD of all the shit they've been doing for the past 5 years because:
1) They definitely have Character animation and voice acting down - Look at FFXIII, that was arguably the only good thing about the game.
2) They definitely have the technology to make big world maps - Look at FFXII.

The fact is, Square doesn't have the mojo anymore, or the magic, or whatever you call it. They're admitting right here that they'll never make a game good enough for me to play again.
An FF7 remake would be great not only for fans, but for new generations of gamers who didn't experience it back in the 90's. Gone is the time when JRPG's were actually respected and gaming required more than just "press X not to die."
I can't help but agree completely with what you just said. I'm actually reminded of the other day when I was playing...you know what? I don't even feel like sarcasm.

First off, how many games rely on one single button? None. Stop belittling the work that developers put into their games. If you don't like shooters that's fine but don't put down the people who make good games or the people who enjoy them to stroke your own ego.

Second, stop getting your "witty comments" from Zero Punctuation. Most people on this site have already heard them, laughed, and moved on. Yahtzee is funny and he occasionally stumbles on to an interesting point about gaming, but his points only naturally occur in jokes. When you try to use them as actual arguments you just sound like a pretentious idiot.

Finally, apologize to anyone who might have actually had their opinion changed by reading your post. Inform them that you are entirely wrong you apologize for misleading them, even as poorly as you did.
Excuse me? Who gave you the right to treat people like crap for no reason?

He didn't even mention shooters, so making that connection says more about you than it says about him.
Just highlighting the part where he mentioned shooters. I'm also being more smug than I'd like to have been. I hope next time someone corrects me, they're right.
You'll be lucky if the mods don't correct you with a suspension.

Why do they feel they need to do it to the same quality as FF13.
From what i've seen of FF7 it wasn't even that good anyway, it seemed to have the same "oh it gets fun after 20 hours" that FF13 was criticized for. At least in FF13 i enjoyed those first 20 hours.

Honestly I want Chrono Cross remade because I still haven't played it. Maybe if they remake the game they can tie it in properly with Chrono Trigger, and the new alternate ending the DS version had.

Either way, Square Enix has a long sad history of sitting on IPs that companies would die for.

What? How does that even make sense? They have the script. They have the game design, they have the music, they have all the concept art... honestly, it'd take less than two years tops. What a load of shite.
Yeah, you are saying that because you are working in games industry and released multiple AAA game and also have good knowledge about developing games for different consoles.

Right?
Don't be such a smartass. If makes me look like a dick, but it makes you look like an even bigger dick.

I don't make games, shocker I know, but there's having the knowledge to make one and then there's common sense. If new current gen games can be made in under two years when they have toe write scripts, create maps, create fighting modes, create concept art, create characters ect. Final Fantasy, which to me doesn't seem like a very taxing game to make compared to some other titles, can be remade in a much, much shorter time. I mean, what do they really have to do? Create the maps? They already have the structure. Create the fighthing system? Copy the old one, it's what the fans obviously want. Come up with a new script? They already have one.

So, I make my point once more: don't try and be a smartass.
Although I agree with you that the game shouldn't take that long to make, I think they're looking at it from a different perspective than you are. You're looking at a game that's a faithful port, but which (it sounds like) adheres to the original architecture of the game, with maybe some slightly improved graphics....a "director's cut" if you will, kind of like what was done for the original Resident Evil.

It sounds like Square/Enix thinks that to do an updated FFVII they'd need to recreate the game faithfully, using current engines and tech. That would be a much larger, more expansive game...unlike FFXIII, in which you're basically playing a thinly disguised adventure-on-rails, FFVII would require open-world environments, elaborate 3D set pieces and locations, and much, much more detail and effort than could be done (in all likelihood) with the same number of people that worked on the original. A really interesting comparison would be to look at the credits list in FFVII and compare its length and the number of designers on that game to the same list in FFXIII....I'll betcha the newer game has a longer and more elaborate list, and as games go it's not even as expansive as its older counterpart, just much prettier. So a faithful adaptation of FFVII with current technology and expectations would require a commensurately larger amount of manpower, time, and energy....but they'd need a certain guaranteed payoff, too, and I suspect that Square/Enix doesn't see that as possible right now.

To many people, myself included, an updated FFVII would be a godsend, a chance to play the game again with modern look and feel, but to an even bigger percentage of the crowd there would be a a sort of "meh, been there done that," and so the game would inevitably not draw as many sales as something new....I am guessing, anyway.

So I guess the real question is: why can't they do an upgrade, slightly spiffed up port of the original, that enhances the graphics but keeps the core engine and gameplay, just something slightly better than PS1 generation polygon models? I'd buy that!

Have you play BRAVE FENCER MUSACHI? Or How about the BREATH OF FIRE I myself, i'm trying to go back on some classic that i miss. Ever heard of WILD GUN?

Once your done, you'll see that there were gems out there and that we don't want remake... we want new gem.
Oi please don't try the "ever hear of.." game with me when it comes to RPGs. I have a lot of gems and I have a lot of garbage.

And obviously "we" do want remakes or this wouldn't even be an issue. You don't.

Anyway, yeah you are half right, I do want a FF7 remake cause of nostalgia and FF7 wasn't even my favorite in the series, 6 holds that place but the FF fanboy phenomena didn't gain its true fervor until 7, much to my dismay, so expecting 6 to be remade is a lost cause.. and assuming they did, it would be on the DS and look like crap, like 3 and 4.

I'm glad you took the time to feebly "counter" each of my examples. Your whole point was a remake adds nothing "new" to gaming. Neither do any of those games, hell, none of those series even do (well maybe Street Fighter since they were sorta the first big 2D fighter). Halo has an over arcing story across multiple games? So did Xenosaga, .hack, Half-life. Neir's been done and it's been done better, what does it add to anything?

And ya know what? I really don't care if it doesn't add anything. Since the releases lately have been so foul, I'm replaying old games anyway. A PS2/3 quality remake of an old FF, Secret of Mana (or one of its sequels that didn't make it state side), Romancing Saga series, or Xenogears, etc, with some new bits to play with would thrill most older RPG fans and would likely make SE a boatload of EASY money. I don't care if its the same game with fresh paint. I'd much rather shell out $50 for a prettier version of a game I already love than $50 for another "new gem" that not only brings nothing "new" but just sucks on its own merits.

Lastly, when you say games you "missed" I assume you mean you weren't born yet.

baring in mind ge said 30-40 years, and thats justa figure he came up with on the spot and not worked out...

id say its gonan take mroe than a few years FF7 was a big ass game and the graphics of FF13 which he said it would be like are insanely good but the game is shorter as a downside...

id say it would take longer than your average game to make, even when stealing things from the old game, but he was obv ust making that figure up on the spot so chill guys...

id prob perfer a new FF game to a remake anyway

Well I guess i should apologize if I sounded like a**hole, but I kinda got annoyed by poeple who think they know how to create game better that actual game makers.

Talking about remaking FFVII

First of all, thing I should mention before everything else, is that consoles have huge limitations. They have set amount of ram, processing power, and so on, so you have to develop a game based on those limitations. FFVII was released like how long ago, over 10 years? Back then consoles were really different from now on, but thats not the point. When you are remaking game, you have to pretty much do everything exactly the same, but with improved graphics, maybe (slightly) tuned gameplay and so on, as in don't change the whole game, but just improve what you already have.

FFVII was build with whole different limitations in mind that games that are being made today. So just porting it to another console with improved graphics is totally out of the question. I'm pretty sure that a bunch of things might simply not work, or would be really difficult to implement, because Kitase said that if they would remake it, they would make in FFXIII quality. Newest FF game has cutting edge graphics, pretty much reaching the boundaries of what PS3 or Xbox can achieve (of course these boundaries are always expanding, because people discover new ways to program stuff and adapt to other limitations in different ways). So what I'm trying to say, is that you will face not only huge amounts of work only to properly remake the whole graphics, sound, but also how to make them exactly the same as they were in FFVII *with* best possible graphics on PS3 (and Xbox I guess), because thats the only way of Square making games. Every time they release new game, it pretty much sets new standarts from technical point of view.

In conclusion, when you remaking the game, you not only improve the graphics, but you have to still leave the same game, with same mechanics, otherwise thats not a remake. And the huge challenge is to develop cutting edge game, with already decided gameplay elements, where game developement usually works the other way around - you discover all the possible cockblocks youmight face in development, and then adapt that game to those limitations, changing every possible aspect of the game so that the gameplay, graphics, sound etc. would be top quality.

Remake FFVI and I'll be more interested. FFVII was just groundbreaking in its visual effects, it wasn't THAT good of a game otherwise.

They can say it all they want because in the end I am not buying another generic title of theirs. If they expect me to ever buy anything then they can give me a modern version of a Final Fantasy I like. No weird characters with psuedo pop culture Lady Gaga costumes, no emo kids, and with a good story.

Sorry Square, ain't falling for this one.

However, you can remake Final Fantasy Tactics with modern graphics if you want.

I don't care if it looks the same as it did on a PS1. I just want FF7 with a decent English script. Is that too much to ask?

I never wanted a remake of 7 to be honest, still don't. However this "It'd take us approx. 40 years to complete" explanation seems far-fetched at best.

They probably just want to get everyone off of their guard so they can surprise release it sometime next year or something. Normally I'd take something like this at face value, but they keep talking about it for some reason. There comes a point when saying "it's not gonna happen" will suffice instead of going off on a diatribe about lengthy development times and other bullshit. It just seems like hype to me.

I completely agree. All they need to do is, update the character models and all the maps. Re-do all cutscenes and musical scores. I wouldn't even care if they used voice acting or not. Most of the voice acting in Advent Children sucked anyway. Then make it HD and they're done.
Maybe Squenix is using FF7 as a trump card, in case they go bankrupt.

Let this game die already. Retro is in nowadays but FFVII is NOT retro. It's old, dated, and ugly. 8-Bit and 16-Bit era games age well because that style is "hip, quirky & charming" to the young people even though most of them weren't even born yet in it's heyday.

Saturn/PSX/3DO era 3D graphics... are UGLY. UG-LY! It's okay to think fondly of a game's story, that's the part that should matter. Just don't take it to ridiculous degrees. Find other fans and keep your in-jokes amongst yourselves, have fun. Non-FFVII fans though, leave us alone. We don't want to see your Cloud/Sephiroth Yaoi fan art collection, piss off.

And understand that your game, your favorite game, is one ugly ************. It's "Photoshop 4.0 throwing up on a Windows 95 screensaver" level of ugly. I've seen more depth in an EGA mode rendered "Quest for Glory."

I don't think that last part was quite on-point for what I wanted to say but it sounded funny in my head so out it came.

But yes, 3D PlayStation One games are sinfully ugly and should be buried in the desert a la E.T. for the Atari 2600.

No remake for you. Get over it. Get a new favorite game.

Aye. Personaly, I hate FFVII, cept for Zack since he was cool. But </3 Cloud. People need to know there were other FFs, and honestly ones that are 10x better. It's just...meh... Glad there not giving in, and focusing on other things.
