Actually in review, the battle system was pretty critically acclaimed.
Though really, any given RPG is mash fest when you think about it XD At least FFXIII switched it up a bit.

Any case, looking forward to it. XD can't wait to play more!

I'd still love something more involved than "Auto Attack x5, Paradigm Shift, Auto Attack x10, Paradigm Shift, repeat."
Then turn off Auto-battle. Seriously. That's what I did. It's an option. Makes the game A LOT more fun.

:p Not sure why people miss it so much. It's like the people thinking FF12 was all auto battle when you had the option to make it more involved.

Tip: If you don't like the look of those screenshots, send them back to Square Enix I'm sure they'll say those don't look like a Final Fantasy game.
OT: Can't say much about FF XII since I haven't played more than 30 minutes of it.

I love how they only make sequels to their (arguably) bad titles and make an (arguably) worst sequel. Well, whatever another S-E title I'm not buying, I'm sticking to their classics. :U

Sorry squeenix, your lies wont work on me anymore.

I bet the combat is the exact same, meaning you can just press x through the entire game, and that you'll need to do that for 20 hours in order for combat to get even slightly interesting.

NO THANKS. Besides, the world, characters, and dialog were just terrible, and unlikely to change.

Maybe it'll have a couple towns though, right?

Heh. If the battle system is the same, I'm in.

You could make the game be nothing but FF13 battles, and I'd buy it.

Oh god the battle system for ff 13 was one of the worst, convoluted, uninvolved battle systems ever. Not that it matters though fanboys will still eat it up and give it a ten just because its Final Fantasy.
I actually liked the battle system a lot. You didn't have to choose your abilities, but instead you had to always think one step ahead to choose your paradigm shifts. I found myself far more involved than any other FF in the past.

I'm not saying that it was perfect (or even my favorite system in the series), and FFXIII did have some other major flaws, but don't say that you need to be a fanboy to like it just because you don't.
You know your right about that and I shouldn't have said it, but their is just something about this game. I hated it, the characters, the setting, the design, the slow poorly paced story, the encyclopedia they make you read just so you have a vague clue to what is going on.

You can like it and i don't think anything less of you for liking it, but I'm going to pass this one up.

SQUARE: Hey Enix, you know what would be awesome?

ENIX: No, Square, I do not know.

SQUARE: Let's make a sequal to one of our Final Fantasy games! FFX-2 was so awesome! Let's do FFXIII-2.

ENIX: Um, Square... I am not sure we can put them in any skimpier outfits, or the game might not get released in Sweden due to child pornography claims... Besides, I thought people didn't like the game?

SQUARE: Pish posh, who can't like endless corridors, no plot for half the game, and not a single town to be in? And lets not do skimpy outfits this time. Let's to ARMOUR! YEAH!

ENIX: So, we fixing the bad stuff? Like the combat system?

SQUARE: Enix you fool, we need MORE of what made FFXIII so bad, how else can we justify having more cut scenes than a Kojima game?!

ENIX: You are right Square, this is a good idea. Let's work on this after we re-release FF1 and FFIV for the nth time. Saves us from butchering FFVII...

And that is how games development happens at Square Enix.

PS: I feel Square Enix is like an ex-wife, you once loved them, but now they just seem to exist to make your life miserable.

You know, I had fun playing FFXIII, but they really need to get rid of the "Auto-Battle" command, because that just kills the difficulty.

Instead, they should replace it with a "Randomize" command, where five attacks are chosen at random for the character to cast: Even if there may be an attack that's not effective against the enemy at the time, or just generally a bad idea (i.e. fighting a Bomb and one of the spells comes up as "Fire"), that's what you get for not choosing your own attacks carefully.

(also, bring back the classic Victory Fanfare)

Funnily enought, that's very similar to what the auto-battle was. If gave you a combo, but it was never the most efficient one. In order to do more damage, you had to go into abilities yousrself and make the right combo.

Frankly, I just wish they made it A LOT more obvious that auto-battle was just an option and that you can select attacks if you wanted.

Maybe had a little window that come up saying "Do you wish to make Auto-Battle default? This will make the battles more simple, however the combos will not be as effective."

Pretty much everything about the world was explained in the encyclopedia thing you had from the start of the game, similar to Mass Effect...that was done so that they didn't need to stop the game every so often for exposition.

Definitely excited for the game, but I'll still refuse to use auto-battle if only because I'm not a lazy bum. Auto-Battle is basically easy mode, in my opinion.

Please take out leader death and allow us to control other people though. Only request for the battle system to be honest. Pic unrelated.

Well, you can configure the options so that you use abilities only. And yes, it actually is better than auto-battle because auto-battle, especially if you're using anything other than Commando or Ravager.

Well, the game's linear nature was because of its story and engine. They just created Crystal Tools recently so they didn't have enough experience with the engine to make HD towns and a nonlinear game efficiently.

And the battle system was awesome, no trolling here.

Final Fantasy XIII-2: Now with ten times more linearity, but hey...at least it's not Final Fantasy XII!

Yes, I thought that was a good feature, as it was something I used quite a lot, but that's the thing, in Mass Effect, I used the codex because of my interest, and even anyone who rarely visits the codex can go through the majority of the game and still have a firm grasp of the world; it's just that the codex was there if you were interested. In XIII, however, I used it just to know what the hell was going on, and, while in Mass Effect they had exposition in conversation if you wanted it, in XIII they use fictional terms in game without any hint of what they are unless you go into the codex, so, until you get to a point where you can look it up, you're left confused as hell.
Or maybe I'm just stupid.

Very nice. I liked the battle system a lot in XIII, and it looks like it'll be pretty much the same. As long as we don't have to wait about 3 hours with plenty of battles before we can actually level up, then its ok by me. Leader death also doesn't really bother me.

Honestly can't wait for this game. Enjoyed XIII quite a bit and liked all the characters, so i'm definitely picking this up!

Wow, the last part of that image really made me facepalm. Do people really assume just because Nomura did the character designs, he had full control over every aspect of the game, or what?

Eh, it's true. I didn't know the encyclopedia thing even existed until about chapter 2 and I rarely used it. Generally I learned what most terms were simply by paying attention to the context is was used in, but I still didn't really understand anything until chapter 6 when it all started coming together for me.

I guess you have a point with ME, though.

People tend to latch on to familiar names. Nomura is incredibly popular, so if he's part of the dev team for any game, anything that goes wrong MUST be his fault. Unless someone with an even bigger name is also on the dev team. Then it's split between them.

Anybody else reminded of Tidus and Auron during the opening of FFX in that second screenshot?

The battle system is what's keeping me from finishing off FFXIII, because it has nothing on the old fights when you simply waited for a bar to fill and then one by one chose a command for each character.

Ah man nothing will ever beat FF8 for me, then again the only ones I've played are 8, 10 and 13.

Anyway I doubt I'll get this, even if I do it'll have to wait until I finish FFXIII, and god knows when that'll happen.

Well, I was never going to buy this game anyway, because I won't have my nostalgia and love for a franchise crushed a second time, but now I'm definitely not going to buy it. As soon as I saw that 'auto-battle' icon in the still I knew that this was going to be yet another disaster. I don't care if it's a new gameplay mechanic, it's so awful that any JRPG developer can probably think of a better one which isn't so uninvolving. I'm just going to go back to playing FFIV: Complete Collection and remember how good Final Fantasy games used to be. Still, I'm so glad that Square-Enix are focusing all their attention on FFXIII spin-offs instead of that new Kingdom Hearts game. I mean, no profit in that at all.
