Good grief, why the heck are video file sizes so much larger on video game cinematics? That just seems crazy to me.(compared to regular HD full length movies.)
The amount of data required to render computer generated images takes up much more space.

That is not true at all. I've played FF7 and FF8 multiple times, FF7 having three discs I think, FF8 having four. The disc changes do not restrict where the player can move. Even on the last disc, you can go back to most of the same areas and towns that you visited in the first disc.
FF8 you can't go to most places on the last disc, because the disc is almost completely consumed by the gigantic ending movie.
Ah, that's right. I forgot that the point of no return in the story comes either right before or right after the final disc change. Regardless, my point is that disc changes do not restrict game design and limit where a player can and cannot go. In disc three you could still return to old areas.

Lost Odyssey was on 4 discs, and it was spectacular. Why would I care about FFXIII having six discs? So I have to change discs once every ten hours. Darn?
Exactly (both on the disk situation and Lost Odyssey) - people are just moaning because they are either:

- PS3 fanboys who use this an an oppotunity to insult the 360.
- Lazy people, who seriously think changing a disk every 10 hours is a serious issue.
- Sheep - you know, the people who claim its a bad idea because said groups make up the majority.
Let's not forget that the 360 is, unfortunately, the most fragile and fickle console out there. The way tri-Ace and Square put together Star Ocean 4, the areas were on different discs, so you constantly had to switch discs. That much disc swapping puts unnecessary strain on the already meek console.

:p
But what if let's say there was no proof of the escapist actually having anything to do with Tying Yahtzee to a chair? It would be worth it.
If he was tied to a chair how would he play it?
We could leave his arms untied, and give him the same treatment James Bond got in the chair scene in Casino Royal.

This just proves my suspicions that the 360 version is going to be of a way lower quality

Well, I was going to try the demo to see if I wanted to get the game...guess that idea's out the window unless I want to cripple my internet connection for a week, or OXM puts it on one of their demo disks.

can't you just put it into an HD movie format though? Rather than rendering though the games engine or whatnot, wouldn't it be better to create the cinematic in engine record it compress it and turn it into a video file that plays at the appropriate time? I mean a full HD movie DL is what 4 gb for (pirates of the carribean at worlds end)(a long ass movie)

Rules are meant to be broken.

Also, i wouldn't call it punishment. More like persuasion.

If you were to "record" it the way you're suggesting, you'll lose significant picture quality. Also, it is a video file. And it is scripted to play at a certain point within the demo.

The movies are not being rendered by the game's engine or anything like that, they're pre-rendered videos. The point is that you still have all of that information on screen, and it's a lot of data to process. The program that creates the videos is where they would export from, and that original video file would be massive. They could compress that video, but then they would lose the video quality. (Even with a lossless compressor, the size is still huge.)

HD footage typically works out to be about 1 minute of HD video = 1 GB of data. And that's talking about a handheld, home video camera. If you create CG images, with tons of special effects, and export out as HD video, you're file sizes are going to be massive.

Point being, they clearly did all the compressing they could to the videos, and that's about as small as they're going to get without sacrificing video quality.

Also, most movies these days still shoot on film. So an HD-DVD video was not actually shot on HD footage necessarily. It was just converted to HD for the DVD version.

It's starting to become more popular, but it's still quite recent. Michael Mann is one of the folks who have started shooting HD Hollywood status films. i.e. "Collateral" and "Miami Vice".

Well, if double-layer blu-ray is enough for this game, there's no problem. I just hope FF13 won't require any PS3 hard disk space..

Honestly I wouldn't mind having 2 or 3 discs. Have you damn kiddies forgot the age of ps2 when a good JRPG would come in this huge doorstop size jewelcase and have sockets for FOUR discs?
think you mean PS1
Lost Odyssey (released for the 360) had 4 disks.
yes, the 360 seems testament to having multiple disks. Call me when the PS3 requires multiple Blu-Ray. (again as a restatement before anyone fanboys my ass, I own all three)
If the PS3 needs multiple disks I'd hate to see how bad the 360 version would be. Would at very least be a 6 disk affair. (which would be 51GB btw, so would likely be more than that.)

If the demo is almost half the size of a 360 game then i do worry that the final release will either be hugely inferior or will come packaged with a librarian to help you organize the amount of disks it'll need.

I hate disk changes
Good for you. You must also hate pressing the ON button, or turning on a controller...if you haven't got the patience to change a disk every 10 hours of gameplay, why bother playing a JRPG?
Yes pushing one button compared to...

Lets see here and remember I can make EVERYTHING seem long.

disk change needed
putting controller down
throwing blankets off body
standing up
walking to the tv
leaning over
opening console game tray
grabing game case
putting disc inside the case
taking the next disk out
putting that disk in
shutting the console case
walking back to the bed
lying down
covering self with blankets
picking up controller.

See thats 16 steps! OR, I could just play the whole game through on one disk... like I have since the PS2 era... yeah.

EDIT: Also lets add into the fact how much of a damn story breaker it is "getting close, getting close, getting close, PLEASE CHANGE TO DISK 3, FUCK YOU GAME!" (Probably) not likely to happen, but hey. Ya never ever know.
Yeah, because all that adds up to a whopping 30 seconds, gone forever...

Consider it part of your 30 minutes of daily recommended exercise.

If more disks means more game time and content, then I'm all for it.

You know I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 needed 2 disc's.
Note: I'm a PS3 owner and secret fanboy.

If the Xbox gets a crappier version, HAVE A FARKIN CRY. It's just the start of it, being that the PS3 is a superior machine and Blu-ray is a superior medium. You're gonna see more of this to come so get used to it.
Final Fantasy has a huge amount of cut-scenes, locations etc... from what you've just read you can tell this will be one of the biggest games ever released in terms of sheers amount of data, so to honestly claim "you're gonna see more of this" is idiotic, how many more multi - platform games do you think will have this sheer amount of content this gen...?
Buzzah, someone sees the light. To the Sony fanboys flooding this thread: quit it. I don't need to bring out my boom stick, do I?

The PS3 is technologically superior. WE GET IT, WE KNEW THIS ALREADY, MOVE ON. It won't matter to this game. There will likely be multiple discs for both platforms: the PS3 will just have less due to the advantage of extra storage space. The quality of the game will likely be the same on both platforms. So no loss there at all.

I'm sorry that your godly exclusive jumped ship, but you guys really need to get over it.
