18 skills is still alot, and in Oblivion, most players didn't level anything besides combat skills. They are just catering to the majority.
That's pretty much the point. Catering to the minority. The land of Tamriel has a rich, storied history, which is represented in small parts by each game. By "streamlining" gameplay, why should you stop and read one of the books on an NPC's shelf? Why not just go, sword and frostbolt blazing and kill whatever monster you're pointed at? There's lots of games like that, and The Elder Scrolls Series should not become that.
Wait, there was a reason to read those books in Morrowind and Oblivion? What was that exactly?

I WANT SPEARS, AND I WANT TO DUEL WIELD THEM.

Other than that, YES. And I must say, if the sword and the monster in the picture is actual ingame footage, and it's already that much more improved in both style and graphics already, I must admit, I am rather excited for this.

I am furious to hear we get even fewer skills, if there isn't an unarmored option I will be even more furious. Everthing else sounds quite good though I'm very happy to hear that you can piss people off now if they get more then 6 VA's (hint: don't waste that budget on Patrick Stewart) it will almost me upfor the lack of skills.

Judging by that screenshot, it's fair to say that werewolves will definitely be making a return then?

Man, I'm willing to cryogenically freeze myself in order to get to November as fast as possible.

To learn more about the back-story?

So there's no more reason to read them in the previous games than there will be in this one, pretty much destroying the argument of the one I originally quoted.

Oblivion has 109 different skill books, each adding +1 to the skill in question the first time you read it.

Okay how many people who never cared about the lore to start with didn't just open the book, get the skill point, and then throw the book away without reading it?

I WANT MY GODDAMN MEDIUM ARMOUR BACK! FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, A REDGUARD IN ANYTHING BUT MEDIUM ARMOUR IS AN EMBARRASSMENT!
....ahem....
This actually sounds like several positive changes without changing the formula too much. I'm now officially excited for this game.

Wary of dual wielding and perks though. Both could be applied either fantastically or absolutely atrociously (this is amusing the perks are more reminiscent of Fallout then Oblivion).

If you don't care about the story, why are you playing an Elder Scrolls game? That's like playing Poker for the texture of the cards.

Yeah I gave up on that story pretty quick when I realized it wasn't interesting. And shouldn't the game be about playing the game anyway? If I wanted to spend my time reading books instead completing quests and other stuff I'd...well, I'd read books.

I wonder if the AI will be as... "Radiant" as in Oblivion?

If it turns out we really can dual-wield shields, I swear I'm naming a character as close as the character limit allows to Sir Schmoopy of Awesometon.

Sweet Bioshock 2 style combat! Fire in one hand and primary weapon in the other! Also I had a nerdgasm because of the included picture.
Yeah Bioshock was the first thing I thought when I saw that picture. I like the new approach on combat, and the the other added mechanics sound like a good idea to.

If you can't join the "bad" guys then the storyline will automatically be as crap as Oblivions. I seriously don't want to go do another fetch the magical item questline again. I just wanted to shove a dagger down Martin's throat.

Oh and Bethesda if you plan on hiring any big name actors this time, actually give them large parts, don't kill them off during the damn tutorial, or make you see them only twice.

My entire point is that The Elder Scrolls series has been about letting people choose how to play. If I want to throw myself into reading all of the books in Tamriel, I can choose to. You don't have to, but lots of people will. By streamlining and catering to the masses, they'll spend less time on smaller subtleties like lore. I'm not saying you can't act like a throwable weapon for a quest giver. I'm just saying that I like my freedom to choose in games, especially games that encourage me to just wander around and do whatever I feel.
