Oh yeah, Video Games make you lose the power to think, that is why I got straight A's in high school while playing games religiously. If only I was playing football I could have been like those straight C paragons of virtue. Srsly lady fuck you and don't get history wrong when you say video games make you a moron.

Haha, oh god it is! And what a sad woman he makes.

The pics on the "my children lead better lives then you" page look like she stole them from some traveler agent website.

I understand The Escapist is just reporting news, but does anyone else see the irony of them posting this 'news'? This site is so against the very concept of a troll that hatred flows through the blood of almost every member here, so why are we feeding this obvious troll? Let the stupid, fat, hillbilly, frumpy mom fade into internet obscurity and take a lesson from your own rule book... Don't feed the trolls!
I kind of like hte entire community, gaming as a whole, uniting behind one banner of hate towards ignorance. That makes me all happy in pants.
I'm sorry but I don't understand what point you are trying to make... are you agreeing with me?

So many replies, so many angry gamers. It's obvious this woman does not care and is not going to listen but I wonder why she was skulking around the Escapist anyways? Was she hunting for people to quote to prove her point or was she seeing how the opposite side viewed her blog? Well, whatever, to each his own. Let us hope for the day where people can have opinions on the internet without people whining about them. Cheers and fuck off anti-gaming complainers and pro-gaming complainers alike.

Okay, it's not good to feed trolls, but to have the entire community hate a single troll that really gets under our skin and be vocal instead of doing the norm and ignoring them, I think that is also good occasionally.
This is actually very true. There are times when it's just a troll being a troll. But in this situation, there's blatant accusations without facts and also straight-up insults to the entire games industry. Sure, the lady's allowed to say "I'm not allowing video games in my house", that's fine. It's the fact that she's viciously insulting everyone else that happens to be part of the gaming community. She spits the extreme abuse, there's absolutely no way that an entire community is going to back off and ignore it. That's just letting her get away with it.

To his credit, as a previous poster stated , Jack Thompson was only arguing that violent video games were bad and should be banned. Now although I disagree with his view profusely and firmly believe it's the parents that should be supervising what their child plays, if they had more knowledge of the industry, we wouldn't have these constant issues of dissatisfied parents not getting their kids attention because THEY approved the violent games over the fun-filled and family-friendly games.

The Michael Atkinson issue is more important to me personally because I'm Australian.. And he can simply go die in a fire. He's a vastly different kind of extreme, where I really don't think he even considers movies being the real cause of kids being violent, not video games. Games are a hobby, a social tool, an entertainment avenue and in some ways, an escape from the everyday human life, because lord knows people need a break from the average boring day-to-day life.

...And that's all I've really got to say on the matter.

Yes, let's ban games and movies and all other forms of entertainment from our lives and lock our children inside empty rooms, maybe that will force them to come up with the cure for cancer, or at least make them less irritable. Clockwork Orange flashbacks incoming... What a dangerous, misinformed person.

Also, first, the "falling apple" story never actually happened, and second, Newton, although a genius, was well known for his love for alcohol and preteen children. I hope your kids give up games and pick up those traits as well. Hag.

Comment added to the page:

My attention was brought here by the escapist, And whilst i can understand why something that you do not understand would scare you, i would like to set things a little straight.

First up:
??than to put them in a darkened room for hours every day with a joystick and a big screen, where they practice killing things for fun??

?Practicing Killing? and ?Gaming? are two different things. I have played a LOT of Shooting games, But im fairly certain i wouldnt be able to kill a man, Or even put together a rifle (i live in the UK ~ no guns). There are many other games out there than FPS?s(first person shooters). If you take you child to the cinema & watch the latest Pixar film, You?re not taking him/her to see an adult film are you? no. Same principle here.

Second:
?Also, Im not too convinced by people who were such ardent gamers they became video game creators. Thats like saying, Gee, I loved crack so much, I went to Colombia and started my own business and now Im rich.?

Or??i loved flying so much i became a pilot? or ?i loved kids so much i had one of my own?, or even ?I love music so much I started my own band.? Overstatements like that are what get gamer?s attention, And also make you sound like a generic crazy. it may seem sad, But it is true.

Third:
?Video games are educational? Sorry, people, I do not believe for one second you are learning quantum physics while you are shooting down zombies. Or that you got your scholarship to MIT by using the skills you learned shooting guerrillas.?

Please Google the following games:

Microsoft Flight Sim
Microsoft Train/Sailing Simulators,

And the number on the Nintendo DS are staggering. Theres even ?BRAIN TRAINING?, Several games proven to help memory & number Function. Just because some games dont have educational value, Doesnt mean there arent some out there.

Finally:
?Meanwhile, my kids will still be playing outside with their balls and bats, exercising their muscles and having fun with other kids, since I wont buy a video game.?

That is your choice, We wont force you to buy your child the game, However when you?re kids move out they will most likely kick back at that rule, Buying games and there is very little you can do about it.

?

In conclusion:

Video Games have good & bad sides, They can bring together a large group of people who all have similar interests, Such as The Escapist Community, and Yes, They can have bad sides (i personally wont go near world of warcraft). But Tarr?ing all Video Games as Evil Is like saying ?all Music is the spawn of the devil? or ?I?d Rather Blind my kids than take them to a film!?

Also, FYI: A ?Troll? (a term you may have seen being used) Is somebody that uses the internet to wind up other people. They usually appear on internet forums & just start antagonising people.

Have a nice day,
Steve,
Insanum.

I don't see how she has any basis for an argument. I mean for an argument to happen, doesn't a thought have to be in place, and her post clearly lacks any thought, so therefore, does it really exist? Wait, wait, I'm a gamer so all this critical thinking is really hurting my head, I'm sorry I just need to play World of Warcraft for a few hours until I can finish my previous sentence.

One person in the entirety of the Interwebs has a conflicting viewpoint and we all jump on her like she has committed some foul crime? Seems odd to me, but apparently not to you guys considering all the posts left here... hey is that my good friend Irony? Yes, yes it is.

FYI, I do not support her opinion so don't go down that road, friendo.

Young men with no self-esteem my fucking arse. I play video games daily and for hours at a time, I'm really surprised I still don't need glasses. Yet, I have a massive circle of friends, I get out a lot, I have a girlfriend. She just has no fucking clue.

Irony: posting about how "evil" technology is on the internet, which from what I heard, is the pinnacle of modern communications technology, which she probably had to access on a computer, which has so many parts and little bits that it takes a trained professional to even know what half of them are called.

I acctully commented on her blog, heres what I wrote: (Warning big wall of text)

"For this comment I?m going to take some points from the article and respond. I?d also like to point out I am both a life long Gamer and in my third year of university (In England) studying psychology.

Frumpy Mom:
?All you have to do is ask any teacher about his or her students? critical thinking skills these days and you will hear a TORRENT of horror stories about kids who have lost the power to think.
Where do you think that?s coming from? Right. TV, computers and video games?

?Or poor parenting. Video games and technology is an easy outlet to attack for those parents who don?t or can?t see it is their own lack of parenting skills that leads to these problems (I?m not suggesting you Frumpy Mom are one of these people but they definatly exist) If parents don?t spend proper time with their children and take a personal intrest in their lives and education things will drop, this laid back style of parenting is more common in the modern world. (I suspect the Mom who phoned the police due to her son playing games was one of these types).

Frumpy Mom:
?I can?t help recalling this sweet boy who invited my son over for his birthday party. I walked into their home, which was dominated by a giant TV on which video games were playing. The so-called ?party? consisted of boys sitting around playing various games, plus cake.?

I?ve had party?s like this, even ones where everyone plays, but they did not lack interaction, far from it, I found that gaming acted as a bit of an icebreaker, there was a lot of talking and interaction caused by it. The Nintendo was called ?Wii? because it indicates more than one player, fun for all. Maybe next time you should attempt to join in and play the game yourself when this happens, don?t worry the controller won?t turn into Voldermort. Its not that interaction is dead at thsoe times it just takes on a different face, like the kind of interaction you get playing a board game.

Frumpy Mom:
?Video games are educational? Sorry, people, I do not believe for one second you are learning quantum physics while you are shooting down zombies.?

Not all games avalable are like Grand Theft Auto or Left 4 Dead
There are a significant number of brain training games around (paticularly on the DS such as The Professor Layton Games), also a lot of games like Portal which have puzzles where you have to use your brain to figure them out and complete the game.

?Video game addiction is becoming more and more recognized as a social problem, mostly for young men under the age of 30 with low self-esteem. There are even addiction clinics all over the world for guys who need help.?

The same can be said for many things such as execise. Their is such a thing as addiction to execise, but would you say execise is a product of an evil power, of course not! Moderation in anything is the key, and in moderation Video games can be fine improving coordination and getting rid of bottled up agression in a way that does not hurt anyone.

To summerise: Video game can have their benefits and are fine in moderation. Even when they become a problem they are a symtom of bigger issues (like poor parenting) rather than a cause. There are many types of games, not just shooters, but racers, puzzlers, sports and many more. Games are meant to be fun for all, its just occasionally the negative aspects get over magnified by the media leading to an attack on games due to a lack of understanding of the full topic, Almost like how centeries ago anyone involved in science would be burned for witchcraft and for being involved with The Devil, simply due to a lack of knoledge about what science is. Is it drastic, hysterical and controversal to compare the attack on videogames to witch burnings? I say only as drastic, hysterical and controversal as comparing video games to the Devil or Voldermort."

Many experts on addiction have said that obsessive gaming is not an addiction but a sign of a lack of family support. When I was little I would have happily played games all day, why didn't I, because I was not allowed to by my parents. When parents say there is nothing they can do because the games system is in their child's room it becomes apparent that games are an easy target to blame anti-social behaviour on when often the prolems are more complex. Games become a target because parents leave their children unsupervised with the games (which IS a form of neglect) then blame the games when the child becomes violent or grumpy (which can be a result of lack of exercise and poor diet, two things which are the responsibilty of the parent).

I wish people like this would stop making it into the press. They're clearly idiots and just need to be tossed into a little 6 foot by 6 foot padded cell with a rubber ball to amuse themselves with and ignored for the rest of thier lives.

Gaming is an easy target to attack for attention whores to get thier 15 minutes of "Omg I'm famous on the internet!".
