this lady needs to shut up. I think the reason people are getting more stupid is because of weed and sh!t. Video games dont really slaughter brain cells like she claims
Excuse me stop the ganja hatin. I have a 3.8 gpa and i regularly smoke weed and drink. As well gaming has improved my reading skills if anything.
man you crazy lucky. others i know have no such luck
yeahh 90% of the weedies i know, were either retarded ghetto people or decently smart but then turned into utter lazy dumbass retards, they literally woke up, worked for a bit, then smoked with who ever they could get some off of, then repeat, infinitely...the ones that are still left are semi struggling to keep the grades and pay for the overly priced over hyped addiction

not saying that all do, but like most people, they dont have the willpower to do such, thats where that consesus comes from

I would love to see someone burst in her house with a flame thrower tank from COD WaW, and hopefully that will be blamed on video games too.

Am I the only person who thinks that when she was at school there was a really nerdy kid, who then went onto make loads of money by making games, while she makes no money from blogging and feeding her children unhealthy food, read the first post "Mini-Pizzas" I mean seriously if your going to be a crzy hippy mum at least give your children healthy food. Not that theres anything wrong with I myself am a huge fan :p

There's pleanty of gamers on /b/, and if someone could drop her adress and that sorta stuff, there would be some serious lulz going on.

And for anon, the lulz are all that matters.

Something tells me there's no chance of a constructive exchange here. Oh well she's entitled to her opinion, just as I'm entitled to disregard it.

Instead of MERELY the theory of relativity?! I'm sorry, but she doesn't even play video games and she can't even understand said theory.

In other news, http://www.sj-r.com/news/x370518733/Institute-to-teach-librarians-how-to-branch-out-from-books. Allow me to paraphrase: the University of Illinois, a respected institute of higher learning, feels that in order to fill the needs of more consumers of information libraries need to branch out to offer more services than just books. A quote from the actual article:

"The institute, called ILEAD (Illinois Libraries Explore, Apply and Discover) U: the 21st Century Technology Tools Institute for Illinois Library Staff, is funded by a $142,000 Laura Bush 21st century Librarian Program Grant awarded to the state library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. ... The institute will help library staff respond to patron needs by using such as blogging; digital audio/podcasting, photography and video; RSS feeds; social networking and photo-sharing sites; videoconferencing and web conferencing; virtual reference and virtual worlds; gaming and instant messaging.

?The UIS library has all kinds of users,? Treadwell said. ?We have to be able to reach out to all these students.?

Yeah, that's right. The Illinois State Library Director and several University of IL professors see games as valid mediums of expression. I bet they can even cite real sources, unlike some random blogger we know...

Video games are the reason I don't write like a 5th grader.
Video games are the reason I've met 60% of the women I've had the pleasure of going out with. Video Games are all that I talk about with my friends besides movies, current events, and other crap. Video Games are what I do when there's nothing good on TV and I'm out of books to read.

In essence, Video Games saved my life.

Apologies if this has been posted already but:

I dont know the woman but from the description I've read of her and what I've seen of women in her age/ lifestyle bracket then surely you could change the following statements:

Video game obsession is a serious illness in this country that many people recognize.

Video games and other electronics are doing bad things to kids' brains.

with:

"Day time soaps and shows (Jeremy Kyle, Loose Women, Oprah, etc) obsession is a serious illness in this country that many people recognize".

"Day time soaps and shows are doing bad things to women's brains."

Now I'm not trying to sound sexist there but the point I'm trying to make is that I have summed up this woman without really looking into her work (as I'm sure she has done with gamers) and made a judgement and opinionated statement that has no basis of fact, only speculation.

She should get off her high horse and realise that gaming is a large part of today's society that is used not just for entertainment purposes but educational as well.

when I see articles like this, i have to wonder how people reacted when books were first introduced as an entertainment medium. "these books! they're made by satan! they're corrupting the children! they're making them do terrorist acts!" Perhaps that's why it took so long for people to learn how to read. It's people like this-biased, alarmist, better-than-thou "social commentators"- that are keeping video games from evolving into a form of art and a way of expression. And as for her kids being outside playing with balls and bats? i hope one of them hits a ball right into her wrinkled, obese uterus.

Let's pretend for a moment that videogames had been invented...100 years ago. They met some opposition early on, but quickly became a popular pasttime. Highschools had videogame teams, parents encouraged their kids to be the best they could be, and colleges offered scholarships for those exceptionally skilled.

Then, circa 1980, football (or rugby, either works) is invented. It takes the world by storm, with usage of videogames dropping dramatically as many kids just start playing football (American).

Suddenly, simulated violence becomes real. Concussions and broken bones are commonplace, and even Death rears its ugly head from time to time. The nations' parents begin to panic as their kids regularly come back with cuts and bruises from another session of their friends having fun hurting each other.

The scary part? This world makes sense. Why would parents embrace watching their kids beating the hell out of each other in real life if for a century they'd enjoyed 'sporting' from the safety of a game system? That's the scary part, but here's the funny part: parents *did* react this way to the growing 'menace' of football. It was no better than a bloodsport to them, because that seemed like exactly what it was.
