Last time around, he had limited authority to build a wall, fought with Congress for a bit, and eventually declared it a national emergency to get around that fight.

This time, he'd need Congress to play ball to actually enact the policy, so he declared a national emergency to skip that fight.

My prediction was almost perfect: I thought he'd say foreign trade was a source of undue influence on the US as justification, and instead he went with trade imbalances make our defense industry reliant on foreign adversaries. Either way, I explicitly called that he was going to need to make a justification like that.
Ah I see. I'd interpreted the like about this being like "build a wall" to mean it's bluster and won't get done.

How do you feel about the President sidestepping Congress's supposed economic powers like this?

I think you just underestimate how much wall got done.

Not a huge fan of just doing what he wants this way, not a good precedent, at least without trying to fight for policy the intended way first. In effect, going this route flips the checks and balances. He gets to act unilaterally using the emergency powers authority, but congress can vote to end a declaration of national emergency to undo it. Congress still has ultimate authority, but the supermajority would be needed to stop him instead of pass policy.

I understand why these powers exist, it's supposed to be slow and difficult to pass laws, which is not what you want in an emergency. But I don't think China selling cheap crap is an immediate threat justifying emergency powers. There was talk of Biden doing the same thing with climate change, though for the most part he just gave the orders he wanted without bothering to give them legal standing, so I don't believe he ever did declare a national emergency on that. Not that there's a huge difference.

And let me know when tech prices go up.
I think you can rest assured that businesses will pass on tariffs. I look forward to companies paying $1 tariff on a $10 import and raising their selling price from $100 to $110 to keep their margin percent.

Just reposting these finely-aged quotes from November. 🍷
Congress can still rebel against him. I'd give it a month, and see if the tariffs' impact is enough that either congress rebel against him or he decides against his previous decision. I got the impression that he tried to play tough against Mexico and Canada these last few weeks that ultimately didn't amount to much.
And let me know when tech prices go up.
Sure. I don't know how connected it is to Trump's policies, though.

This was literally my 1st post in that whole discussion. I care about prices.

Surely then you have evidence that all these prices went up last time he was president?

I'm also guessing if prices go up any decent amount and people b!tch, Trump will get rid of the tariffs.

This is not how the world works. We are about to enter a worldwide recession because Donald Trump hired either a BA in Economics who didn't know his qualitative analysis, or a journalism major who is running PR defense for Trump using ChatGPT.

You don't enter a TPP agreement with other countries because they outnumber you in a bloc and, therefore, can coalition-build against you. This is why the bilateral trade is better for heavyweights like your Chinas, US, and Russias size countries, vs, for example, smaller countries like Malaysia. You can bully people more in those talks like what China did to Singapore, for example. It's not fun, and I wish we didn't do it to say Lestho as a human being, but that's a valid, if unethical way to do it, but not always.

What you don't do is implement policy via algebraic equations that assume countries will sit there and do nothing, because most won't. Some of his ideas are good, I want to shoot down Russian ICBMs so a US Iron Dome equivant like 'golden dome' is a good idea, and no, China won't start a nuclear war because they comprise 1/7 to 1/8 of humanity, and thus many more people would die in China vs the US, which is why the US nukes have escalation dominance in MAD granted just because the US has more medium sized towns than Russia, and population is more spread out than China doesn't make nuclear war a great idea either, but the calculus holds. Thank all that is holy, he didn't cancel the F-47, that was such a bad move by the Air Force/Navy to even propose that.

I don't care if he gets the world to hate us if he gives us an edge in geopolitics and reverses the US GDP as a portion of the world's GDP. A growing portion of the world has the internet, and will get jealous of the US evenutally if they aren't right now unless they get a green card like how a hourly employee is jealous of a salary employee who is jealous of a millionaire who is jealous of the multi-millionaire who is jealous of the billionaire who is jealous of the mulit-billionaire.

Edit: This isn't how you make America great again.

Sure. And then you made other posts. In which you said blanket tariffs won't be applied across the board, and that I should tell you when it happened. So I'm telling you now that it's happened.

That was my initial goalpost though and that's what you were criticizing.
Right, and then you chose to make additional claims on top of it, that blanket tariffs wouldn't be applied across the board.

You asked me to tell you when it happened. I'm telling you now it's happened.
