The political organization led by prominent Democrat Stacey Abrams is branching out into paying off medical debts.

ATLANTA (AP) — The political organization led by Democratic titan Stacey Abrams is branching out into paying off medical debts.

The Fair Fight Political Action Committee on Wednesday told The Associated Press it has donated $1.34 million from its political action committee to the nonprofit organization RIP Medical Debt to wipe out debt with a face value of $212 million that is owed by 108,000 people in Georgia, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Lauren Groh-Wargo CEO of allied group Fair Fight Action and senior adviser to the PAC said paying off medical debt is another facet of the group’s advocacy seeking expansion of Medicaid coverage in the 12 states that have refused to expand the health insurance to all poorer adults.

“What is so important about this is the tie between Medicaid expansion and just crushing medical debt,” Groh-Wargo said.

Of the states targeted, Arizona and Louisiana have expanded Medicaid.

Fair Fight said letters will be sent to those whose debts have been absolved to notify them. The purchase will forgive the debt of nearly 69,000 people in Georgia, more than 27,000 people in Arizona, more than 8,000 people in Louisiana, and about 2,000 people apiece in Mississippi and Alabama.

The group has raised more than $100 million since Abrams founded it after her 2018 loss in the Georgia governor’s race. Fair Fight has been most noted for its advocacy of voting rights, but has also been pushing for broader health care. The group launched ads last week demanding that Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp add Medicaid expansion to the list of topics that Georgia lawmakers will consider in a special session starting next week to redraw electoral districts. Democrats are hoping Abrams will run against Kemp again in 2022, a narrow loss that launched her into political stardom.

“I know firsthand how medical costs and a broken healthcare system put families further and further in debt,” Abrams said in a statement. “Across the sunbelt and in the South, this problem is exacerbated in states like Georgia where failed leaders have callously refused to expand Medicaid, even during a pandemic.”

RIP Medical Debt said Fair Fight is giving the third-largest donation in its history. Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott gave the group $50 million last year. The group has aided more than 3 million people since it was founded in 2014, typically buying bundles of medical debt at steep discounts from the face value. The bills often are purchased from collection agencies that have been trying to get debtors to pay for years. The group has wiped out debt with a face value of more than $5.3 billion.

Allison Sesso, executive director of RIP Medical Debt, said such liabilities often drive people into bankruptcy, can deter people from seeking needed medical care, and can lead to wages being garnished or liens filed on property.

“I wouldn’t underestimate the mental anguish that people have from medical debt,” Sesso said.

Sesso said her group is not just pursuing debt abolishment “but thinking about how we can improve the system nationwide,” trying to advocate that hospitals should do more to make charity care available. She also said research shows states that expanded Medicaid have lower rates of medical debt.

“We are not the permanent solution,” Sesso said. “There does need to be a larger solution around what we do about medical debt.”

Groh-Wargo said the money was given by donors for political action, but said the money represents “only a small percentage” of what Fair Fight has raised.

“I think of this as politically tithing to help the community we are advocating for and with,” Groh-Wargo said, saying the group has done smaller scale charitable efforts.

Trump labeled it a terrorist movement and got the FBI to drop white nationalists as a threat even though they have been responsible for a spate of attacks during this time and put the BIE up in their place.

This is what happened when Obama and Michelle stared a gesture that has been done in schoolyards since... before I even existed, and labelled it the "Terrorist Fist Jab."

Hell, having personal definitions robbed is the essential summary of most minority groups in this nation. In all nations, if we're being real. I've literally curbed myself from posting more even though there has been a myriad of incidents that happened since the last thread I've made because of this comment. I don't want to be seen as that guy. I don't want to have to post it all the time. I've said as much countless times. But even more, I don't want to see it any more. I don't want it accepted. I don't want thoughts and prayers. I just want this Shit to stop.

I just want to be me. I don't want to walk in and have the way of everyone's prejudice on me before I even utter a word. I want to point out the lies that people use to make those prejudices, not because I think it's fun, but I think it's essential that the truth is told. I want to point out the injustices that were suffered that no one seems to care about... and it doesn't escape me that there are a ton of things that happened but no one talks about it unless I bring it up... because People. Are. Being. Hurt. But I got so twisted by a definition that I effectively stopped myself. World weariness aside, I'm not doing that any more.

In short. If you truly cared about people being mislabeled, I would see more of you doing it for all people, not just conservatives. I spend time defending conservatives. When Police get it right, I make it a point to highlight it. I could easily have written off Right-wing people who died, who spent a lifetime bashing people like me and arguing for lesser representation of those who were different for them. I never agree with ACAB, even though I've barely had decent experiences with cops, let alone good. I won't let the South get written away because even though it would be easy to, I know every human being is an individual and can not be summed up by a belief of an environment without getting to know the person. I've said often I don't want the Republican Party to go away because everything needs a balance.

I mean it when I say that I want everyone to be represented. Full stop. White, Asian, Latino, Black, Straight, Gay, Transgendered, Cis, whatever. If you are human, come to the table. You belong here. It isn't even a right, It's Your Duty To Be Heard.

You want to know what killed BLM? It wasn't the right. It was people watching as leaders in BLM used money to fund multi-million dollar property empires and put up fences round them to protect them. It was others pushing for it to be far more than just better police accountability but instead removing all police or the insane demands from some chapters about creating a black government just for black people separate from the US government who only made rules for black people. It was people in the media who the moment the BLM voting block achieved what they were seen as useful for they stopped giving a damn mostly.

The cause got lost to the corruption. What is it now is it 2 or 3 separate alleged rapists #Timesup have helped defend or helped them prepare their defences? The people who started #Metoo so far one has seemingly gone fairly off the deep end recently into being a republican (No really) and the other was outed as by legal definition a rapist herself. Oh and I held out hope for #Timesup initially because it was pushing the idea of actually using the legal system properly but it just became another way to funnel money.

You know why I'm critical of the things I am?
Because the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
People want to feel good supporting a cause and time and time again I'm sitting seeing the causes subverted or taken advantage of or taken way off to some extreme point. People are trying to climb the staircase in 1 step and wanting all the change now then when nothing happen or worse it's being abuse or taken advantage of or subverted then no-one was holding back. There was no back up plan. It was done and back to basically square 1 again. Some-one has to sit in the back of the room and be the person who descents and points out the problems in the hopes people listen. I can also only write about and make threads about what I find out about.

Why am I not making threads about stuff going on? Because I don't find out about it and because we have a forum of a lot of people here to jump in and make threads who purport to care deeply about the stuff far deeper than me and will keep trying to assert that in threads as a point against me. Don't ask why I'm not making the threads ask why the people who claim I'm so bad and by implication they're so much better aren't doing it.
