I think the matter of widening the ceiling between the middle and upper class is kind of inherent in any technological breakthrough. Those in high places of power will inevitably get their hands on new things before Joe Blow, whether they be military hardware, expensive cutting-edge medical treatments, or what have you. What we fear isn't speculation--it's reality already.

If you think changing the body or 'genetic potential', as you would have it is really changing anything for better or for worse, maybe it's time to re-assess your position in the current election... I don't see you winning it, Joe Blow. No, there's a rich politician winning it for himself, and misrepresenting your desires. Whether his kids get to be athletic or not really doesn't put things much less in your favor than it already is, when the whole system stinks.

An interesting proposal. Mid-Atlantic, I'd say. Obviously, we'll need to develop some sort of guard force for our city. Some sort of large, mechanical father figures would be best suited for it.

I think this is all coming together nicely.

EVERYONE STOP! We are forgetting that when we were kids there was one cartoon that dealt with this very subject:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqGQyMF5a_0

If I could be the Great White, I TOTALLY change my opinion on this!
Oh man, I had totally forgotten all about that cartoon.

Nostalgia blast hit me hard.
Yeah, it hit me hard too. I was all sitting here reading the arguments for and against genetic manipulation, someone said something about dolphins, and killing sharks, and then it hit me. I had seen this very debate before, on TV, when I was little... Genetic manipulation is used for evil. But admit it, if you could be built like the Great White, you would... Sure, there probably wouldn't be attractive women interested in mating with you (I am NOT a furry, so I would need an unaltered woman to satisfy my desires), but I would be PART GREAT WHITE SHARK!

Seriously I can't imagine doing this, but the idea is awesome, right?

Absolutely disgusting. There is already a huge social inequality gap in the developed world. Something like this would only serve to widen it even further. People would be denied opportunities becuase they could not afford to purchase this serum. People would be incapable of doing as much as those who were fortunate enough to get the wealth needed to acquire it. Some people will merely use the serum to make up for their own lack of effort. Such a thing will only bring problems to our society, and thus must not be used.
This.

In addition to what he said here, there really isn't any need for something like this, except for a world war or something on that magnitude. We already have fantastic technology, great athletes, smart scientists, etc. This obsession with faster, better, stronger (not just people, but technology as well) is just BS because as far as requirements go, we pretty much have our basics covered pretty well. Of course, there's a couple of important ones, like cancer, that we need to solve, but other than those, it just sounds like it will be a boost of mental/physical abilities that really has no reason.
Oh man. I wish my view of the world was similar to yours. Imo the world is a shithole and could do with a whole lot of improving. I'm not sure a furry-serum would be the way to do it, but smarter people? Hell yes.
Smarter people, means smarter solutions. Smarter solutions are usually easier. Sounds good to me.

Simple Question, Simple Answer.

Would I get the serum? Yes.

If there is an option to make me part-reptile, with a tail and everything? Hell Yes.

If I could mix and match traits like in that one episode of Batman Beyond, so I could become a "chimera" of my own make and choosing? FUCK YES, GIVE ME MY DRAGON SERUM NOW *****!!

Totally. I'd be in on that at the drop of a hat. I mean come on, you can be part Great White Shark, who can swim in concrete. If that's not reason enough for you, you could also eat literally anything. It's beyond awesome.

Also, I'm gonna have to actually find a torrent for that cartoon now. I'm struck by an inexplicable urge to watch the whole series.

PS - I also found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqgJ6wzSW8k from your link, and got yet another, bigger nostalgia blast.

90's cartoons were so ridiculous.

Damn, I never even saw that one... You have bested me good sir, for obscure genetic-engineering-based cartoons...

Ok, I know I know where "Haven" comes from, but for whatever reason I just can't quite grasp it. You want to share?

I hope that is never invented, and not because of the furry aspect. Intelligence is the only true way that one person is not equal to another at birth. When you make everyone smart and no one stupid, you destroy the fundamental basics of natural human inequality, thus destroying society itself.

Now, this may sound like a good thing, but it's not. There has always been inequality in the world, there always will be inequality in the world, and there must be inequality in the world for society to function.

--1984 (That may not be the exact wording, but you get my point.)

Magic pills that change your external characteristics (muscle mass, penis size, skin color, eye color, weight) are fine by me. At the end of the day, those don't really matter. Intelligence matters most when you take out which socio-economic level you were born at. If you were to put every single person who ever existed at the same socio-economic level, the smart ones would rise higher than the stupid ones, who would fall.

You just reminded me of the book, "The Last Book In The Universe." There are these people called proovs, basically they're genetically enhanced to be smarter, faster, prettier, and just overall better than a normal. They often discriminate against the people who can't afford the injection for said genetic enhancement.

It actually wasn't really genetic engineering, IIRC. I'm very vague on this, as I haven't watched that show in 15 years, but I want to say the basic premise is that the dinosaurs got stuck in suspended animation somehow before an alien found them and made anthropomorphic. He tried to use them as a criminal gang kinda thing, then they rebelled and had to fight against the other collection of anthropomorphic dinosaurs the dude had made and stop the other group from causing global warming.

So... We blame... Dinosaurs, not just any Dinosaurs, but anthropomorphic Dinosaurs no less, for Global Warming? Someone call Captain Planet and make this really interesting...
