As to what you said about "guys seldom are made uncomfortable by shirtless men", I'd just like to help make your point for you.major_chaos said:If you think this is ire, Tropes vs Women must have started your monitor on fire.Lonewolfm16 said:A simple celebration of sexiness in gaming draws immense amounts of ire from this community. So basically, yes we are slowly becoming /v/ with a thin pretense of civility. And also continuing to get weird looks from non-gamers because this is what they think we all are.As for what it represents, it represents that some people like seeing sexy big breasted ladies
Like something about videogames instead of boobs?just you generally want to post things that most people will enjoy.
I was the at my local Gamestop this morning to get Dragon's Crown the second the store opened. Take from that what you want. Also, if the fact that some people like seeing sexy chicks, and other people draw/animate/put them in video games, bothers you,
I don't feel objectified, I was saying that the Escapist's few female members might. And if you feel personally objectified by something that never had anything to do with you, then you have severe social issues.
Its obsessiveness that makes it creepy. Also, I fail to see how liking big breast makes someone a "creep",
In my experience guys seldom are made uncomfortable by shirtless men unless its because they are afraid of "catching the gay". men and women do not have the exact same reaction to everything. Also, if your issue with this is it makes women feel uncomfortable, why would a equivalent, opposite gender gallery solve that? Its ok as long as everyone is uncomfortable?
No, I think they'd be called butthurt, raging, crying as well, if an issue was raised.Screamarie said:Remember the Watchmen movie? ...
men LEFT THE THEATER because seeing another man's dick on screen made them uncomfortable. I know some men who have not seen the movie all the way through because they refuse to have to look at another man's penis...
And yet if *I* walked out of a movie theater or hell, even this thread, because it made me uncomfortable that the only thing these female characters were being noted for was their breasts, I'm an uptight feminist who's butthurt and raging and crying.
Haha what? You really had a problem with that line? How is that offensive? It's a joke using the commonly used line when a woman catches a guy staring at her boobs.Psychobabble said:snip
In most "sexy-lady" pics, the woman is wearing a bra (or some other item of clothing) to push up her boobs and get that nice crease across the top. With no clothes on, they naturally fall a bit lower. Breasts are actually a sort-of tear-drop shape with the point at the woman's armpit.RandV80 said:I've never played the Halo series, but is it just me or does something seem off with Cortana's proportions? Absolutely right, but that's not really what people are annoyed about.MetalMagpie said:major_chaos said:Classy. Women have boobs. Most men (and many women) find boobs appealing to look at. There is nothing wrong with this.

I have only seen one person claim it was sexist, or rather they called it misogynistic (when will people read a dictionary and learn what that word means anyway?). Most people from what I have seen are annoyed like me because they expect better from The Escapist, not that they are offended.wulf3n said:No, but blaming the "asshats" when the topic was derailed from the get go [literally the first 5 posts] by those that would rather jump to the conclusion that said topic is sexist, rather than discuss sexism, further perpetuating the lack of any real discussion is.
I was wondering if you would notice my claim. I admit it was disingenuous as I had seen you're later post clarifying your position as something more akin to sensationalist media rather than sexism, which I don't disagree with.Legion said:I have only seen one person claim it was sexist, or rather they called it misogynistic (when will people read a dictionary and learn what that word means anyway?). I haven't seen people cry "sexism". Rather they have pointed out that this kind of thing does nothing to help the image gaming has of tolerating it.
Having only seen the article post change I can't truly say that my initial position would have been any different, as such I'm not in any real position to criticize.Legion said:That said, they have actually added a discussion point now, so they really should have wiped the comments section clean and started over seeing as there is something to actually talk about. Which is hilarious, because if any other random user (i.e. non-staff, non-contributor user) had've made a thread like this, it would've been locked due to having "no discussion value".Legion said:When most people posted comments it was literally just an article with pictures of busty female characters.
Agreed.Legion said:That said, they have actually added a discussion point now, so they really should have wiped the comments section clean and started over seeing as there is something to actually talk about.
Why exactly is is not a "good idea" to post a news topic with nothing but boobs and some vaguely sarcastic comments? The pictures aren't offensive. Boobs in video games have been the subject of a lot of over-blown discussion lately, so it's not as if this is completely random.Legion said:Absolutely right, but that's not really what people are annoyed about.MetalMagpie said:major_chaos said:Classy. It's not the boobs, it's why the Escapist thought it'd be a good idea to post a news topic posting nothing but boobs with some vague sarcastic comments. It's not clever or funny (Critical Miss on the other hand gets how to do it with humour) and just comes across as click bait.
I am almost always on the "There is nothing wrong with sexy female characters" side of the gender debate, but I dislike what I perceive as hypocrisy on behalf of the Escapist. They condemn this kind of thing on the one hand, while doing it themselves on the other.
I genuinely am not offended in the slightest, I have nothing against sexy women or sexy characters, I am just irritated by it. It comes across as childish.
Perhaps that means I don't have a sense of humour, but to be honest I don't think so because when I see people do it with a bit of wit, I do find it funny.
Calm down. It's a few pictures of fictional women; not hardcore porn. You see a lot worse than this in shampoo ads!Observer4k9 said:What the fuck? Are you fucking kidding me? Because if we'd done something like that without any discussion the thread would be locked down within seconds for having nothing to discuss.MetalMagpie said:Why exactly is is not a "good idea" to post a news topic with nothing but boobs and some vaguely sarcastic comments? I don't find it offensive, I don't see why some people do. As for you posting pictures of hunky guys you actually couldn't without a discussion to go with it, the thread would get locked. If you posted the pictures as a reply you'd get a warning for low content. And even if it was completely random, why would randomly posting pictures of women be offensive? I could randomly post pictures of hunky guys for no particular reason. Is that offensive? Do I need to be "clever or funny" to post such images without people getting angry about it?
I don't get why people are angry either, personally I find it more eye-rolling than anything else.I get that not everyone finds this funny. Humour is a personal thing (and the comments on this thread are far funnier than the original post anyway). What I don't get is, "There are pictures of boobs and it's not a parody and/or I don't think it's a funny parody, therefore I'm angry."
It's not that I find it hypocritical because the site is normally prudish. As for the Escapist being "hypocritical", I never got the impression this site was massively prudish or overly-serious before, or that they (as a publication) openly disapprove of boobs in video games.
Especially the old Herbal Essences one when the women made noises as though they were experiencing an orgasm.MetalMagpie said:Calm down. It's a few pictures of fictional women; not hardcore porn. I didn't think it needed saying that the rules for staff publishing articles are different to the rules for users posting forum threads.Legion said:Because if we'd done something like that without any discussion the thread would be locked down within seconds for having nothing to discuss.MetalMagpie said:Why exactly is is not a "good idea" to post a news topic with nothing but boobs and some vaguely sarcastic comments? I meant as an article. The forum rules aren't really relevant here.Legion said:I don't find it offensive, I don't see why some people do. I hate to say it, but welcome to news media! If you want to read a publication that includes content on the basis of its worth, pick up an academic journal. News sources produce (and re-post) content on the basis of what people might like to read or view. The fact that the Escapist listens to what their audience is currently talking about and publishes relevant content isn't really a bad thing.Legion said:It's not that I find it hypocritical because the site is normally prudish. As for the Escapist being "hypocritical", I never got the impression this site was massively prudish or overly-serious before, or that they (as a publication) openly disapprove of boobs in video games.
It's difficult to describe exactly what I mean. It's kind of like they don't post news because they think it's worth reading, but to try and please whomever reads it. If the current "vibe" is that games are not women friendly they will post an article supporting that. If it's that people are blowing their fuse over some fictional boobs, then they post things like this. There is no sincerity behind it, it's trying to appease the crowd so to speak.
In the wide scope of the internet, I don't see it as particularly shameless or much of an "attention grab". I doubt more than a couple of people found their way to the Escapist today by a link to this news post. Typing "video game boobs" into Google gets you 37 million results, and The Escapist certainly isn't on the first page. If they wanted to farm clicks by offering boobs, they'd have to try a hell of a lot harder than this!Legion said:I am not saying they are "wrong" for doing it, but I felt that it is a shameless attention grab, which was what my original comment was about. Seeing as they have no added in discussion, I have posted a response to that.
I'd forgotten about that one. That's one of the few ads I've seen that was actually awkward to watch with my parents!Legion said:Especially the old Herbal Essences one when the women made noises as though they were experiencing an orgasm.MetalMagpie said:Calm down. No no, it's satire. You can tell by the way they referenced something else that was entirely stupid first. I mean... that's how it works, right?FargoDog said:Really?
