Well, I give them props for putting Shadow of the Colossus fairly high on the list.

[sub]*insert fangirl rage on why Bioshock is on the list instead of System Shock 2*[/sub]

1) Baldur's Gate (series)
2) Diablo (series)
3) Monkey Island (series)
4) Shadow of the Colossus
5) Mass Effect (series)
6) Batman: Arkham Asylum
7) StarCraft
8) The Legend of Zelda
9) EverQuest
10) Devil May Cry
11) Tomb Raider (series)
12) BioShock
13) Metal Gear Solid
14) World of Warcraft
15) Deus Ex
16) Super Mario (series)
17) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
18) Silent Hill
19) Assassin's Creed
20) Dead Space
Fix'd.
Sorry, but I don't consider those struck out as legitimate games, no matter how popular they are. Simply due to the extreme emphasis they place on grind instead of gameplay.

Adding those levels of grind to an otherwise solid game is like baking a delicious cake, and then only permitting yourself to eat an ounce of it per day. By the time you've eaten even half of it, it's gone stale and you want nothing more to do with it, but you must eat it or it will go to waste.

Commentary on the actual games:

Why are these on this list?

20) Dead Space (You have Bioshock listed, and System Shock 2, apart from its dated graphics, is a MUCH better space-horror game than Dead Space. BY FAR BETTER. As we say around these parts "Get this weak shit out of my office!")

19) Assassin's Creed (I simply disagree here. It's good, and very solidly designed, but I can think of much MUCH better games.)

17) CoD4.0: MW is basically a surrogate for Halo, seeing how stupidly similar the two games are mechanically when you look past the genre difference. It's an unfortunate quota that had to be fulfilled, but at least it's near the bottom of the list.

11) Tomb Raider (This series was never really excellent; merely popular due to its infamously well-endowed protagonist)

Additional Commentary:

6) Batman: Arkum Asylum (This game actually deserves to be on this list. I'm just surprised to see it so high up)

2) Diablo (Oh, I've sunk more hours than I can remember into D1 and D2...but even now I look back and wish I had found something else sooner)

What isn't on this list:
-Bethesda games (As hard as I am on them, Morrowind and Daggerfell are both quite good. Not sure if they're Absolute Top Caliber, but yeah)
-Metroid [series, minus Other M] (Really, I suspect this isn't on the list solely because of how shitty Other M is, and given how many recent titles are on here, it's still probably a sore spot in our collective memories. I'd place the Metroid games well above Mario and a bit above Zelda.)
-GTA [series] (well...the only ones that would be counted are from GTA3 onward, since so few of us actually played the top-down series)
-Half Life [series] (I'm not all that hyped about Half Life in general, and I'd still pick this over fucking Dead Space.)
-Final Fantasy JRPGS (It's a sign of the times when not one game of what used to be an immensely popular genre isn't on this list. My picks for a representative would come down to Chrono Trigger, Suikoden 2, and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions)

Oh, lol. I'm a game developer and I've only played through like two of those games. But it doesn't really surprise me, most of the people I've worked with are into fantasy rpg-type crap and mmos. Among game devs, it never seems cool to like Half Life or Gears of War.

I wonder who these people were that they polled.

I guess there ae worse line ups of games but...I think this just means that all game developers are jealous of valve. I can think of no other reason why none of their games are there.

Really interesting to see that Baldur's Gate is top. Didn't expect that at all. All I remember about that game is that I had a demo for it, and there were rats. Big ol' rats.
I can only think of one time you fight rats in the Baldur's Gate series, and that's as a joke at the very start. You might be thinking about a different game unfortunately.

Sorry, but this list is kind of crap and reeks of developers trying to push their own games. I have been wanting to try Baldur's Gate for a while, but this list is not reinforcing or diminishing my desire to play the game.
Actually you should being the one that got 1st place most mean that more then just their developer likes it :)

the places 10-20 on the other hand feel a lot like developers praising them self.

Thank Darwin i don't give a damn about popular opinion.

I've set up my own list of top games and it's the only one i'll ever trust, and i don't even expect other people to care about my list since it's all just personal opinion.

The only things I would change: add (series) after The Legend of Zelda, change World of Warcraft to the entire Warcraft series, and throw the Total War series a bone. If you didn't put the entire series up there, at least do Rome.

Otherwise, I'm relatively happy with the list since I haven't played many of the others.

Bah. Everytime one of these lists is released it's a crock of shit. Some of those, surely, have had huge impacts upon gaming, but the majority will be forgotten in 10 years. Would people truly dare to compare Arkham Asylum with Deus Ex or Baldur's Gate?

It's like comparing Avatar (which was a fun enough movie) with Jurassic Park (a film that will remain magical for children and adults for decades - nay, CENTURIES - to come??).

And really .. wtf .. no Elite ?! *points to avatar*

Personally, I'm overjoyed that Baldur's Gate and Diablo are way up there, but I don't agree with some of these other games. Silent Hill should be bumped up, Tomb Raider shouldn't even be there (your smokin' sweater puppies can only take you so far, Lara) and Half-Life should've
made the list. I smell hax.

Also: "Ooo, squirrels, Boo! I know I saw them! Quick, throw nuts!"

Hmm. I'm pretty sure that there were all these rats knocking about at the start... Maybe monkeys later on? I don't know. It was a PS2 thing.

Oh wait. I played a demo of Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. They we go =)

Blizzard being a major contributor and Diablo Starcraft and WoW all making the list, suscpicious...

no probably not, those are all pretty reasonable choices. I do wish that Half-life or Portal made the list though.

I'd kinda figured, a lot of people think of the Dark Alliance games when they hear Baldur's Gate. Not actually the series being talked about here though, go figure. Same name but two completely different Baldur's Gate series.

Old PC version by Bioware and Black Isle is the one they're talking about. Most importantly it's also the one with Minsc & Boo!

If you're at all interested in rpg I'd suggest looking them up. Despite being over ten years old now the series is still easily available in boxed form as well as through gog.com and hold up surprisingly well, the second game especially thanks to its high resolution artwork and robust game engine. You might be surprised!

No Half Life is somewhat concerning. No Valve whatsoever is highly suspicious, as Dead Space somehow made it. Modern Warfare? I guess it gets a pass, seeing how even Yahtzee gave it a lot of praise.

Pokémon.

It's possible, you just have to freshen up the concept. Landscape hasn't looked well for strategy games in general lately. Maybe due to Modern FPS selling better. Or that strategy games require advanced and expensive AI. I dunno.

This really begs the question: if so many developers love Baldur's Gate, why the hell does no one make that kind of isometric RPG any more?
That sort of decision is ultimately based on what they think will sell, not what they'd prefer to be playing themselves.
Which is odd, considering what sells REALLY ought to be the same thing as what people want to play. Also, you'd hope some indie dev would make one. Makes me wish I could program.
