Gamestop's quality really depends on where it is and who is working there.
Alot of the employee mistreatment from Zero Originality has changed, I experienced a lot of it when I worked there years ago, but the people I know there say its gotten better.
But back to my original statement. Gamestop really does look around it and bases their business on what other stores are around them? Are they in a mall with a bestbuy, target, walmart, or another retailer around? They most likely wont keep their used prices high. Or they'll make sure to hold random things like Buy 2 get 1 Free. Also if you're in a somewhat populated place with customers going in and out it is really hard to have a decent conversation with people and even then there are a lot of people who would always come in just to talk and never buy anything. Its like yea, I understand maybe 1 out of 4 or 5 times you come in and buy something but there were always like 13 or 14 year olds who would come in and want to talk about halo for hours and the 2 years I worked at game stop I never saw them buy a single thing.
To address some of the other criticisms, gamestop was kind of forced to employee its bastardized tactics because business just failed by trying to wholeheartedly cater to the customer. Back in the day when it was stores like Funcoland or Babbadges where they let you play games there and hang out, business wasn't that great, hell they tanked pretty hard. They had tones of store closings and useless stock. They saw that other stores like Toys R Us, Best Buy, etc sold games and made just as much money without having to deal with all the hassle of catering to the customer.
The same with giving almost nothing for used games, have you seen how many used game there are that never get sold? I remember we had boxes of games in the back of used games that just would never sell. And in the end they throw all those games into a bargain bin that usually sit there and rot until eventually they were boxed and sent to god knows where. This is a loss for the company. It would be great if a store could sell a used game and then make a guaranteed small profit off some one else who would buy it.
That said I rarely go to gamestop anymore, I mostly surf the net for deals on games, but if I'm forced to go to my local mall to find a copy of a game it really doesn't usually matter where I get it, target, walmart, bestbuy, gamestop, they're all the same. They are stores, nothing more nothing less to me.
