I think i speak for everyone here:

Lolwut?

Anywhooo, uhhm. As for the Australian rules on basically banning any movie, game, t.v series etc. They always do and always try to, they're trying to create the safe-state. Basically this way they feel they can't possibly be blamed if some child decides to re-enact Manhunt again. Fortunately there are always methods to work around these rules. Downloading films, legal or otherwise, will always give the opportunity to get around it.

I hate to pull this card out so soon but there have been other governments in history who destroyed cultural works.

I may respect the Australian government's refusal to classify it, but you don't destroy culture, on any medium. If they had been burning books there would be Nazi comparisons flying all over the place.
What about child pornography? Anyone who has it in their posession is arrested in most countries...

What exactly do you think happens to it afterwards though?

You might find that a bad comparison, but you do have to wonder at what point it becomes OK to destroy something.

I don't think it is a good idea to destroy anything, but when something will get you arrested just for having it, obviously it's not actually possible to do anything other than destroy it.

Sucks to be the creator of anything that gets banned. -_-
Maybe it's just my bias but I don't consider child porn to be culture in quite the same way I consider films like this to be culture.

Which is not to say I think all child pornography should be destroyed (this is a complicated argument I will have no chance of rendering fully on this website). In short, in the same way that we keep museums and remembrances of what the Nazis did in World War II, and also keep copies of their propaganda and culture around, I view child pornography much the same way. It's not pretty, but it's a part of what human society has to offer, and sweeping it under a rug and pretending it doesn't exist shows a weakness in confronting the medium.

I don't think child pornography should be condemned without understanding. I think it needs to be confronted for what it is and what it represents before we start attacking. (This is where my reasoning gets deeply into philosophy and politics so I'll just leave that argument where it is because I really don't want to kick off a flame war.)
I understand what you mean, but that was kind of my point. It's the argument about where the line gets drawn between what is acceptable as art, and what isn't.

It gets worse in that a lot of countries (such as the one I currently live in) class 'simulated' child pornography (eg. Animated, CGI, etc) as legally equivalent to photographs of real children.
While you might not find much merit in pure pornography, the kinds of laws around it certainly ban things that are far more of a grey area altogether. (Like Lolicon that actually has some semblance of a story independent of it's sexual content.)

The problem generally is somebody deciding that things are unacceptable, and the consequences that has for the material in question.

It isn't so much what that content is, as the very principle that this implies.
That there even is such a thing as material deemed offensive enough to need to be destroyed is worrying in and of itself.

Haha really? Burn it? You know it's a movie right? A made-up story with actors who are consenting adults... So ads for Saw in public that show people ripped apart are fine but this film is so evil adults can't choose to watch and it must be burned like a witch.

I'm going to have to side with the Aussie Government on this one.
At least you're forthright about it. Your view is simple and indefensible, so you put it simply and don't defend it. =P

Ok I agree Australia ratings and censorship can be a little overboard at times, I admit that, but lets look at the facts in this case because the author is way out of step.

The movie is consider to be illegal in Australia.
I don't think the police raided the house to destroy the tape, that is something the author made up, I couldn't find any evidence to prove that was their motive.
Like all police they knew the tape might be in the house and it was illegal. So they went into the house to find the tape and possibly arrest the director.
I don't know police procedures, but I'm pretty sure you don't destroy a key piece of evidence until after prosecution, if that.

The Director destroyed the tape himself
There are other copies of the film, just not in Australia.

For some reason this made me imagine the Australian police force as the Operative from Serenity.

"I don't murder homoerotic zombie art films."
"I do. If I have to."

I'm just happy that Australia is as isolated as it is.

I mean.. Their influence doesn't stretch very far beyond their borders.

Right. I thought Australia is supposed to be a democratic country - freedom of speech and all that? ringing any bells? Nah, never mind then....

Thanks Australia, thanks for giving me more and more reasons not to go to that place. Police raids to destroy offensive materials, gee where I do I know that from... Oh! That's right:
Actually, most countries with anti-narcotic, anti-child pornography, and anti-gun laws eliminate those sorts of offensive materials via police raids as well (which could easily include your nation).

The Australian government has tried to outlaw porn on the internet before.

I'm surprised that movie made it through customs without bursting into flames.

How utterly pathetic of the Australian Government. From what's described the film sound like trash, but a public office actively censoring products not inciting harmful actions raise serious concerns about artistic freedom of expression (and just how the police choose to prioritize their presumably not unlimited resources).

For shame, Australia(n government)!
You should do what I do, and just assume everything in the land down under is so great that their police force has nothing to do. Lying to yourself makes the world so much prettier.

Oh no! A gay zombie movie that the vast majority of people wouldn't watch! It must be destroyed!

...Honestly, I've seen way worse stuff on the internet, and stuff like necrophilia's been on True Blood anyway, this isn't anything new.

I love how they say 'homosexual sex' like it's so much worse then straight sex.
