I think this has been my favorite silly argument of the moment. People and pundits have postulated that perhaps Duke is just too archaic, too backwards, too juvenile for the modern era. To such an assertion I must simply raise an eyebrow and take note of the endless array of games where I partake in the same power fantasy of saving the world that Duke has always pursued. The difference? Apparently the simple act of hanging a candle on the sillyness of it all somehow results in a game that is less mature.HG131 said:Plenty of games, like Borderlands, are just as juvenile.Omnific One said:Sadly, I don't think this game will work as well now that the industry has matured (a bit). Duke Nukem is still a bit juvenile.
Also for Gearbox it'll be the cheapest game they ever make, they bought a game from a dying company, so the IP was probably pretty cheap, also the game was (to Gearbox) almost finished. So i'm guessing they had to put shit all monies towards the game and because the game has super hype behind it, it'll make a huge profit for them (Gearbox) as i'm pretty sure they own the copywrite now. So either way, they make lots of money... no risk.About To Crash said:Well, it's a gutsy move on Gearbox's part. Surely they understand that the game world has lost most, if not all of its anticipation for Duke, and even if the game is made of sparkling diamonds, it's going to receive a stiff reception if only because the game world has moved on and will probably have a bit of a sulk that 3D Realms isn't the creator. But hey, I'll give it a whirl, why the hell not?
Look, if this game has anything that's as funny as Duke's treatment of the "Overlord" in DN3D, it will work. Trust me on this.Omnific One said:Sadly, I don't think this game will work as well now that the industry has matured (a bit). Duke Nukem is still a bit juvenile.
I fail to see any comparison between what Duke was and what Borderlands is. Duke was built from the ground up to be overflowing with machismo and risque content, the "Manlyiest Game Ever Made"... sorta, I'm being more than slightly sarcastic. Borderlands is just a collection of pop culture references. (Mad Max > Mad Moxxi, the repeated Monty Python references, etc etc)HG131 said:Plenty of games, like Borderlands, are just as juvenile.Omnific One said:Sadly, I don't think this game will work as well now that the industry has matured (a bit).
