I have to say, I have always looked to google for random "hallmarks". Most people know about Normandy (though come to find out my girlfriend didn't o_O), but I had no clue it was also the anniversary for tetris.

*Insert half arsed joke about Americans being late for every war*
You can't be late to a war you tried to stay out of...Or a war in general...

And we weren't late to the Revolutionary War. That would be the French.

And, on topic, Google can do whatever they want. That's the beauty of a free country. Personally I think Tetris fits Google better than D-Day remembrance. Something about technology...

"If you're not with us, you're against us." Some conservatives still hold the Bush doctrine to heart, stupid as it may be.
I don't see how "Let's make the whole world hate us" is conservative. It defeats the purpose of conservative politics. But I might be wrong, though. Maybe I'm not retarded enough for politics...

I agree with you here, but I contest the meaningless of the deaths. World War II was one of the few meaningful wars, and they did help bring down the Nazi's.
Um, no offense, but IMHO every war is meaningless and stupid. Sure, the nazis were evil and stuff, yes, they were retarded too, and this goes for each and every country. War is just stupid. Yes, I'm a fucking pacifist, I don't see how killing other people would solve anything...

BTW, I'm really sorry for all the sane and sensible Americans, because obviously their country is doing everything in it's power to incite the whole world against the USA. And they are dumbfounded to see that everyone starting to hate the shit out of their country. I wonder why...
Apology accepted, and I and fellow sensible Americans are in no way represented by Fox News or the Bush administration.
If that was sarcasm, I admit defeat. Typos, I still have them. I wanted to write "I feel sorry for..." And yes, there are an increasing number of Americans I meet online, who are more than a little embarrassed about the leadership and the amount of stupidity in that country. No offense, really. We have that here in Hungary too, as much as I like to deny it, we are probably even more fucked up than the US... :/

While the tone of it is all wrong, understand where these people are coming from. Google choose to commemorate the universe of an iconic videogame, over one of the most important dates in history, whether it be American, British, Canadian, Australian, German, French, or Russian. The day that marked the beginning of the end for Hitler's Third Reich, and the liberation of those conquered lands (since the french couldn't hold their own.)
And how, exactly, would you expect Google to commemorate this important date?
Blood, bullets, and dead bodies all over the logo? Yeah that would surely show decency.

Of course I understand where they're coming from, but they're blowing it way out of proportion. Besides, anti-American? Seriously? Well I didn't celebrate Independence Day either, quite possibly because I'm not from the US, does that make me anti-American? Of course not, it just makes me not American.
I mean the fact that I can access Google from over here in Germany and read it in my language should be proof enough that Google most certainly isn't American.
Seriously, that's like saying Sweden is anti-American because they're not called the USA.
Have you thought about google being a company based out of out of America, and considering it's an American corporation, one really could consider it American.

I'm not saying they should have done it, or how they could have done it, but just merely pointing out where people are coming from. And before, they've done the google logo as something in the middle of a bigger picture, they could have just put it in something, not spelled google out in a thematically relevant manner.

My typical response to this kind of crap: Who cares?

More importantly, what were they supposed to do? Use the corpses of soldiers to arrange their letters?
Exactly.
I think its quite sad that they would get angry that a Website didnt set a logo to commemorate something so unrelated to Google.

... He does know that the internet doesn't just exist in America? Why should Google change it's logo to commemorate one day right-wing Americans want to hold onto but the rest of the world would sooner just move on and forget about? Maybe... Just maybe... It's because that's the last war in which America did genuine good in? Where they defeated a great threat? With the help of other countries I might add but no, they don't want to acknowledge them.

Give me a bloody break. Warner Todd Huston, please go back to scoffing apple pie and saluting the flag a few dozen times a day. Rant over.

That's odd. So do I...

IRELAND IS A NEUTRAL COUNTRY LIVING ON THE SIDE OF ENGLAND

Am I anti american now? no. Lots of shit happened before WW2 and lots of shit happened at the same fucking time, just because I don't mention one doesn't mean I'm ignoring the other. once again pissy patriotic twats make their shennanighans known to me by being whiney and unreasonable for no reason other then "but comeon people, it was WORLD WAR TWO OMG".

Pfff.I don't see Google celebrating, I don't know, the German Unity Day or the Storm on the Bastille or the Haitian Indepedence Day(which is on the first of January, though I'm not sure what they declared Independence from)."What makes America so special", I ask with the voice of the extremely arrogant European that I am.

I didn't mean conservatives period, I meant the "hate is a family value america #1 lets be assholes because we're the best" kind, which on reflection is more lawful stupid than conservatism.

Well, meaningful for war. I also agree war is stupid, I just meant meaningful by the standards of retardation. Still foolish, though, and we only had to do it because of how thick Hitler was.

Oh, just misread it. Simple misunderstanding. Still stand firm that I'm not represented by fox, and neither are many Americans.

I wasn't arguing with you, in fact I was mostly agreeing with you. Just don't want to approach a flame-war by the standards of The Escapist.

It's depressing that some people look for tiny things to ***** about.
From what I see here about google means it's un-american to think about something happy and to celebrate one of the most addictive games made

Firstly, I think that googles decision to use something upbeat and comparativly minor is perfectly acceptable as it is supposed to be amussing rather than deadly serious. A silly google pic for a d-day memorial would risk ending up being more offensive than supportive.

Secondly, why is d-day suddenly only about Americans? British and Canadians covered three of the five beaches, and most of the intelligence used to plan the raids was gathered by the British.

Thirdly, why is something automatically anti-American just because it's not blindly pro-American? The people who make these complaints have more patriotism than brainpower.

It's been said before, but Google is an international company. As an international company, it is in their best interest to be seen as neutral in all matters political, religious, and otherwise. They're also not owned by the State, and as such are not obligated in any way shape or form to celebrate national dates-of-remembrance or anything else for that matter.
Wikipedia disagrees.
