I didn't know so many people didn't like them. I like them a lot. Their old stuff was really good. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown are also good because they don't do generic mainstream rock. They try to point things out to people or tell stories. I don't see too many new rock albums that tell stories or at least have a meaning in all of the songs. I think they're a good band.

I feel like I'm the only person so far who remembers 1039 Smooth Out Slappy Hours, which was an awesome album and my introduction to Green Day. If you listen to that album, and then Dookie, when they "sold out" you'll understand that they never really changed their style, they just got a bigger production budget and more studio time to make it sound better. As far as people who decry GD as sellouts or not being "punk" I'd respond by saying that those guys have made the music they want to make their entire careers without regard to "punk standards" or anyone else's, and that makes them more punk than most bands, in my mind. If to be "punk" and an individual you have to make music a certain way, then you're not really doing anything unique.

OK, so their music is not technically fantastic, but 21st Century Breakdown was a great album, in my honest opinion.

Catchy melodies and riffs backed by good percussion. (IN MY HONEST OPINION)

If they're going to do another album though they should return to traditional albums rather than the "rock opera" concept they've been favouring recently.

I have a mixed opinion. Their songs are catchy and fun to listen to. But it's definitely not punk, atleast not what I know as punk (Sex Pistols, Black Flag, old Beastie Boys). Also, I hate the way they look, which brings me to my next point:

I HATE what they started. Thanks to these guys saying they're punk and appealing to the middle class tweens, they created a new annoying group. The scenesters and emos. Not just Green Day, but all the bands like this: My Chemical Romance, AFI, NOFX, Nirvana, etc. All these pop-punk bands spawned these losers. I can't go to the mall without seeing a 12 year old in neon-green spandex, a purple sweater, and a Spider-man purse. Guy or girl. The mall is full of these weirdos and it annoys me. They're not only weird but sketchy. You always hear about people getting stabbed at that mall, West Edmonton Mall, and these are usually the culprits.

There seems to be a point in all teen's lives where they subconciously choose either Green Day or Nirvana (philosophically speaking). I've always found Green Day's songs about teenage ineptitude, wanking, mooching about and generally being, well, a teenager easier to identify with than Nirvana's more posturing take on young angst.

I'm not too sure about their recent march into cod-politics, or the increasing amounts of make up on Armstrong's face, but hey, the music's still good live.

Also, 2000 light years away and Panic Song are brilliant, brilliant little pieces of music. Everyone should be made to listen to them at least once, even if they don't like them. Just to hear exactly how to put together proper pop music.

Don't like them. Basically anything that came out during or after the 90's I don't like. Of course there are exceptions.

That's a little arbitrary do you not think?

Man, there's so much hate in this thread.

I've seen them three times in my life, and whilst I love them to pieces (my mum brought me up on Dookie) I have to say, they've gotten worse every time I've seen them live.

I think they are very talented, and for a shining moment they tapped into the public consciousness for American Idiot and got it so right that it remains opne of my favourite albums of all time.

Whilst the had the same sound for 21st Century Breakdown, it felt how it sounded, exactly the same, and the world moved on. I'll never stop loving Green Day because they've been brilliant in the past, but I think if they ever want to shine so bright again, they'll really need to pull something new out of the bag.

I've always liked Dookie. But I'm not really a fan of Green Day (I wont immediately ceck out new songs by tem, like I would te Flaming Lips for instance).
owever, I can see wy tey are so popular among middle scoolers and just young "rebellious" teens in general, listening to tem is te lowest common denominator form of rebellion for young 'uns
And te fact tey brand temselves as "punk" is laugable.

They're one of my favourite bands; Nimrod was the first album I ever bought. They're only bad album in my opinion is American Idiot. It has potential, but never actually goes anywhere, unlike their latest which is my second favourite of their albums (below Nimrod, above Insomniac).

It's not really an album; it's a conglomeration of EPs. But yes, it is awesome (and actually tamer than after they `sold-out').

Never liked them, but that's mainly because of the genre. They don't suit a metalhead like me very well, I'm afraid.

me and chapper share the same opinion. punk is just too... weak.

I don't think there that much of a punk band there more corporate rock or fo-punk, but if you want real punk bands try gbh, rancid, leftover crack,or nofx !

I refuse to recognize 21st century breakdown as a Green Day album, it shits on the good memories of my early teens.
