Grievances about Skyrim

My single biggest complaint is the lack of good unique loot. Morrowind was chock full of it. Mentor's Ring, Marara's Ring, etc. All of the quest rewards and dungeon loot in Skyrim are leveled weapons/armor with basic enchantments. Sometimes they don't even make sense (one of the "Axe of Whiterun"s that I got was an orcish 2 handed axe with an absorb magicka or some shit enchantment... why would the Jarl's ceremonial axe be an orcish axe >_>).

I caught myself getting a little attached to some members of the cast(Like the residents of Megaton).
Yes! I know Bethesda can make characters with interesting personalities that I actually care about, even in the middle of their biggest games. Case in point: Megaton Sheriff. I know exactly what you're talking about here.

I wish the game just ended after the main quest. I know a lot of people hated it when that happened in Fallout 3 (Pre-Broken Steel of course) but anything after the ending just feels like a huge anti-climax. The main quest actually had a pretty epic ending but afterwards almost nothing changes. (This is my biggest complaint with the game in general - NPC's don't seem to recognize or react to your accomplishments/choices at all) They should have just ended the game with the Dragonborn riding off on Odahviing and cut to credits. They could have warned the player before the ending like in New Vegas.

I remember the same problem happening with Broken Steel, which somehow had an almost worse ending the vanilla game.

I have many, many other issues (Just trying to cover things people already haven't) than that but overall I still enjoy the game. It's written somewhat better than Fallout 3 and Oblivion, so at least Bethesda is improving in some areas. Of course, that's damning with faint praise, isn't it?

Minor quibble that really annoyed me at the time: Werewolf focused quest (Ill Met by Moonlight) no mention of you being a werewolf if you are already one. Such a missed opportunity there.

Same problem as Oblivion, not enough legendary weapons and artifacts in Morrowind you had lots of different unique swords and cuirasses to choose from.

In order of how much I care (least->most):

1)The imbalance of play styles. I started with destruction magic and one-handed. It was working, until I started dying (clearly). So I switch to restoration and one-handed. Better for a day, then i was dying again.

Then I tried dual-wielding in plate armor...

It made an unbelievably astronomical difference. I was indiscriminately chopping everything in my way like butter. Seriously, One-Handed is FAR too powerful.

2)World-Eater my ASS. I'm sure word has gotten around that the final boss sucks. Without going into detail (seriously, the end scene is cool, but not because of Alduin at all) I'll just drop the simple detail that I killed him with six power-attacks, without getting hurt. Talk about retarded easy. I was disappointed.

3)Exploitable professions. I'll keep this one short: It's very easy to level up professions. I made 540 Iron Daggers, and then my smithing was 100. It cost about 9,000 septims, which is piss easy to make back (since then I've made back 50,000). Also, I got more and more barter items, so that i could end up with Iron Ingots that cost about 9 gold.

4)AGAIN! It never happened until after I finished the main story, thieves' guild, and dark brotherhood chains and decided to move on to the Winterhold college. Every time I shot a spell at the amulet door in Saarthal, the game froze irreparably. Also, when I tried to do the Sanguine quest, I drank all three drinks, he said "You don't look so good," then NOTHING HAPPENED. I want my damned Rose.

TL;DR: 1) Melee is too strong, 2) Last boss is pathetic, 3)100 Smithing can be achieved by making only iron daggers, and 4) Glitchy as shit, as any Bethesda game.

I do love the game though. Huge amounts of fun, in spite of its flaws.

Don't know if these have already been said but:

- Display racks and such not working properly. It annoys me that I can't display all of my shiny valuables.
- Stuff just randomly falling through tables and display cases. I just don't like my house looking all messy. Makes decorating your house a bit pointless too.
- A few weapons and a single armor set are leveled. Namely Chillrend, the Nightingale armor, the Nightingale Blade, and the Nightingale Bow. Why they decided to have those and ONLY those things leveled is beyond me. Especially since you need to be a pretty high level to get the best versions (around 50 for Chillrend and the Nightingale Bow and Sword, not sure about the armor).
- Dragons are....well easy. They can do good damage, it's just that they're really slow in melee combat and have very predictable attacks. By the time one hits me once I've hit it around 20 times.
- The guilds were pretty short. Didn't take me too long to finish them all. But I guess the ability to still do quests for them after becoming the master makes up for it.

That's about it. I'm still loving the game, I just hope that the display racks and such are patched up soon.

A valid point of view. I will agree that if you look at it this way, vampirism is perhaps more useful than werewolf-ism (?). Vampirism lacks in visual effects (would love some sort of transformation or flying power) and being a werewolf doesn't have many advantages (besides looking awesome as all hell!).

Perhaps there will be mods to remedy these "issues" soon :)

I've been through the game several times and been a werewolf everytime. They are best used to kill groups of humanoids in any kind of cave, camp, or stronghold. Using them in this way is fun just for the terror you can cause and the slaughter. I go through kill everyone as a werewolf and terrify them with the roar(the ones that are affected)and then rest an hour or two to change myself back and then I go loot. The tight spaces you just walk backwards and you'll get through. The vampires, you don't get to change form, you dont get daytime regen, you can only feed on sleeping victims wich is never fatal and if you don't, NPCs will turn hostile on you. The abilities they give a vampire are weak and pretty much useless. Vampires do get live forever, but that doesn't matter much in a game that doesn't age you. Another werewolf perk though, if you don't like an NPC in town, change where no one can see you, kill that person and leave. There will be no bounty and its a fun way too kill those that you don't like.

My latest grievance is by far the biggest.
On my current game I had completed all factions except Stormcloaks/Imperal, and I had just a few main quests left, when I encountered an unfixable gamebreaking bug. A warning for others;
I you haven't yet completed the Stormcloaks quests; do it before you decide to finish the main quest line. There's one part where you need to speak with both leaders of the factions, but if you're on the first quest with the Stormcloaks you'll be unable to continue. Ulfric won't speak with you, and the guy he's refering you to talk to won't do it either.

90 hours down the drain. Just about to start over and finish the main quest/Stormcloak one quickly so I'll get my platinum. What sucks the most is the chance that my character will be deleted once I've started a new one(due to another bug)...

Agreed. And they're still copy/pasting items from Morrowind, rather than coming up with new stuff.

For anyone that doesn't understand the extent of the problem, here's my house in Morrowind, displaying a healthy chunk of the unique items and artifacts

The amount of choice you have in quests, which honestly isn't that much.

"Either do it or don't do it."

There's never really any sense of you taking a quest in a different direction by betraying the quest giver, keeping an important artifact for yourself or bringing in a third party which adds a new spin on things. New Vegas was loaded with quests that could go any direction, but Skyrim not so much. I'm actually finding myself becoming rather bored with it.

I've played dozens of hours of skyrim already and not been to even half the cities yet. I've loved every minute of it and havent gotten the slightest bit tired of playing it yet.

That being said, there are some aspects of the game that REALLY bother me.

1. dragon corpses don't despawn in towns. I've encountered one dragon in a town so far, just about a week after I started playing skyrim. another couple of weeks later, and the corpse of that dragon is still laying right in the middle of whiterun. It was cool fighting the dragon in a town, defending the citizens and watching their reactions to the attack, but now its just a major eyesore. Every time I make a trip to town, there it is. It also has an annoying habit of teleporting all over town, chaning its position in the town seemingly every time I re-enter the main part of town. I mean, do they ever despawn or does it just take a really, really long time?

2. Kill animations. Not the ones you perform on enemies to finish them. Though kind of sloppily animated, they are still badass and everytime I kill an enemy with one I feel giddy. I'm talking about the ones enemies perform on you. I can't count the number of times I've been in a fight, watching my health bar to make sure I have plenty of health left so I don't die, when all of the sudden the view switches to first person, and I'm automatically killed. No chance to block, no chance to activate a healing spell, no chance to open the menu and use some potions, just instantly killed. The worst part is that this often happens when your health isn't even that low. I've had it happen when my health has been up to over half of my max health. That's just messed up. Also, this usually tends to happen after its been a while since I last saved, so I lose a lot of progress. I know its mostly my fault for not saving more often, but why should I expect to die when I still have over half my max hp left?

3. Magic is useless as a long range weapon. For starters, the novice level spells are literally useless at long range, since they have a constant cone effect at a short range out in front of your character. Ok, fine. They're the games basic spells, you would expect them to have their inadequacies. However, the next level of spell is almost equally as useless. Not that it isn't powerful enough or that it doesn't have long enough a range, but it moves somewhat slow, and npcs are godlike at dodging them. I will aim spells right at them, and they immediately dodge to the side right after I throw it at them. There's no way of leading them, because they stand still right until I cast the spell at them. Once in a blue moon I'll hit at long range, but pretty much all the time I need to move in to close to mid range to have a good enough chance of hitting something. the next level of spell after that has a nice area of effect damage where the spell strikes, and does high damage, but it also uses up a huge amount of magic. I can usually only cast a few dual spells of it before I'm out of magic, so if I don't hit all the enemies or miss a shot, it doesn't work well. However, with the destruction perk that makes dual casts stagger, spells work really well at mid range, which I enjoy using.

4. unkillable npcs. Ok, I understand that it is vital to the integrity of the story that some npcs remain alive, so I can accept that there are a few people I can't kill. The problem with unkillable npcs in this game is that there are so damn many of them. I typically play a good, heroic kind of character, however sometimes when I'm ready to quit playing, I'll make a last save, then massacre a town just for the heck of it. (not saving again afterwards of course). This is problematic in skyrim however, because of the vast number of unkillable npcs. I'll go through a town, slaying all in my path, attracting more people to fight and kill all the time. The problem is, a good number of the people I kill don't stay dead. Because of the large number of unkillables, I eventually gather a pretty large posse of people trying to kill me, none of which I can kill myself. So basically I lose. Sure, you can attack them, and make them fall down for a while, but they don't stay down for long, maybe 15 seconds? Definitely not long enough. They just keep getting back up, and eventually overwhelm you. Not fun.

5. Paths. Is it just me, or is it really bothersome trying to get to a lot of places? I really enjoy the gameworld of skyrim, the scenery is beautiful and its amazing getting to climb tall mountains and see the rest of the land from up high. While cool, the mountains also make traversing the land very troublesome. Often when trying to make a straight line for distant places, I'll find there's an entire dang mountain right in my path, and can't find the way around it or through it, if any. It's fine for stuff like towns that are at a more normal ground level and that have main roads running through them, but for out of the way places that you need to get to for quests, and exploration, or to kill dragons and find word walls, it can be very difficult. Finding that steep path that will get you up a mountain range can be hard, many of them not connected to any main roads, or hidden from view by rock formations, forests, or other structures. This problem could be easily fixed, if the game map were updated to highlight pathways to and from places, but I doubt that would be added to the game. maybe a mod?

I could go on with other grievances, but those are a lot of the main ones I dislike. All in all though, I love the game. It has provided many hours of entertainment and immersion, and I look forward to many more.

Thanks if you actually read that whole wall of text. :p

The econemy annoys me a bit. There are a couple of things

1. If I buy iron ore from someone, then I smelt it, then I make a dager from it, the selling price of the dager should be more than the buying price of the bits. AKA there is a value add that should over come even their proffit margin.

2. Murchants should be out to make a proffit, not out to gauge the hell out of me. Otherwise I should be able to create the Skyrim equivilent of craigslist and cut out the middle men who take 40%+.

3. Things should have different values depending on location.

4. I would like to be able to make more business, maybe buy a mine and hire labors to dig out iron ore, I could stop in every few weeks and smelt what they found and creating stuff with it.

5. I really liked the blacksmithing and want more of it and want the interface improved. I would even go as far as to say they should look at blacksmithing from the sims midieval.

6. THe colleges and guilds feel weak. I remember the mages guild in mirrowind, I had to join, do work, had to be at a certain skill level and have points in magic before I could advance, then eventually kill the arch-mage before I could become archmage. It felt more rich. As someone joked earily they joined the mages guild and within two game days was the arch-mage dispite not having any magic skills above apprentice level and there being masters all around him. It just feels a bit weak. I want to feel like I've earned the title of arch-mage. same with the companions, I haven't done theives or assassins but I've heard simualr about them.

7.

Let a rig to a key set (aka I press 1 not to pull out my sword, but to pull out my sword and sheild and put on my heavy armor and I press 2 to change to my definsive magic setup) and/or at least give me more than 8 map keys. I don't want to have to micro manage my power slots or my powers.

------------------------

That bein said I love the game.

Dragon Priests being harder to kill than dragons. Seriously, most can one-hit you at mid-level and always focus on you, whereas dragons fly off and go and toast a random bear after a minute or two. That said, Morokai was easy for me, because I managed to find a spot in his chamber where he couldn't hit me or move towards me. Dragons also don't really have any good loot besides the occasional inexplicable enchanted weapon; Dragon Priests almost always have cool masks and staffs.

I guess Skyrim must be pretty awesome if my only grievance is that some bosses are too cool.

Yes these two, I left of my own list, but the path don't show up well on the main map and figuring out how to get from where I am to where I want to be is sometime a huge pain because there is a moutin in the way. I've heard their is a map mod that fixes this a bit, but I would like all the main roads to be clearly visible in the main map.

And the no killing kids thing just offends me for how anane it is. I don't even want to kill the kids, but making it off limits just seems stupid

Yeah, I wish it was like the Fallout games where there's a "checkpoint" of sorts that lets you change ANYTHING before you continue. Just make a save right before it, and BAM, no more tutorial.

1 The game hangs at intervals
2 Dragons in the towns do not 'rot away', but that was ninja'd
3 There does not seem to be a permanent way to slightly increase carrying capacity - either that or I'm having too much fun twacking things to take note of any change when leveling up
4 The facial expressions and body language could do with some improvement.
5 THE CHILDREN. I don't want to kill them but some of them are irritating - like that brat in Dragonsreach.

The menu has to be my biggest gripe I liked how Oblivion would show you your rank within guild or better explanations of what the quests are about and what you need to do.

Also the quick item is very annoying also having to pause the game to go down a list to choose what you want to equip kind of ruins the heat of a battle :(

I?d like there to be a little bit more recognition for the things I?ve done. I?m the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold, I?ve mastered two schools of magic. So if Farengar says ?If you have the aptitude, you should consider joining the College of Winterhold? one more time I?m going to feed him to a Dremora Lord.
