This is nice and all, but they could buy a PC capable of running Halo 2 for a very reasonable price. Are they really so dead set against keyboard/mouse controls that they won't join the PC communities that I would assume are still playing this game?
Even then, it has 360 controller support...

I will say that this was pretty cool, I know that I'd do the same thing if one of my favourite games was being shut down

Good for them. They put their money where their mouth was. They love the game and did everything within their power to prove it. No one can take their hard-earned nerd-cred from them now!

Why are people getting so up in each others' grills over this? The guy loved the game, didn't want to sign off, didn't sign off, got eventually signed off by internet-force

He wasn't protesting, he wasn't being a d-bag, he was just saying goodbye to a game he really enjoyed.

Isn't that a nice thing?

Or are you all just arrogant and insecure and feel the need (like my brother) to randomly and rampantly criticise anything anyone else does because you feel it's the only way to make yourself look better by comparison?

Sheesh

Yep. Although why you would want to play old games, is another matter entirely. I for one, will likely not miss TF2 when TF3 comes out.
Well, sometimes continuations turn to crap, or just become too diffrent from what you loved about the orginal. For example, black and white, I know people who hated some changes in the second game (like armies) and preffered good'ol B&W 1. Or CS has still a loving community even though CS:S is popular as well.

Finally. Buncha pricks.

I just hate this shit. If the servers are closing, just let them close. I can only imagine the hell that will be unleashed when the CoD4 servers are shut down.

EDIT: Since I'm being attacked for saying this in a manner I wasn't expecting...allow me to to try and clarify why I find these people to be pricks. Look, the PC version is still online. The game is old as hell at this point, and can basically run on any machine made in the last few years, so if you love it that damn much, just move on to the PC version.
Oh don't mind me and my PC enjoying every game realeased on it FOR ALL TIME.

I'm sorry, but you come across as something of a consumer drone, with all the "Do as the dev say!" and "Move on to the next game regardless of quality!" talk. Why on Earth are you so into just doing as you are told?

Personally I found this whole thing rather silly, but I can certainly understand where they are coming from. I guess there is a reason I loathe consoles and the iron grip they put you in. How do people live with it?

As for the service they "abused" so horribly, I though people paid to play online on the X.box? If so, I hardly see how they are pricks for using a paid service. If not, then why on Earth did MS not just close the servers if it was such a huge problem?

Bottom line: nice work, those guys. You sure got the final enjoyment out of the games you paid for. Now I'll go back and play an old game online just to prove a point.

It's not my opinion, it's Graham Stark's opinion, I quite deliberately put that in the sentence before the one you quoted.

And yes, it would have been more triumphant to let the servor finally shut down, and would even have added a nice meta-fiction note to the Halo story, echoing the final game, the Master Chief, having fought many battles and done great things, being allowed finally to rest in peace, knowing his task is done.

I'm going to quote someone else here, 'if you're a true fan of the game, you know it didn't need a sequel.' And it's the same principle, if you really were a true fan, instead of someone who just wanted their own way, you'd realise that this was a fitting end.
I have no clue who Graham Stark is, but I guess his opinion and yours is the same anyways so, back to square one. It's your opinion they should have just let it go. It's my opinion what they did was pretty cool, and they meant no malice or anything. I don't think it's appropriate for people to start saying who is and is not "true fans", however. These people sure sounded like fans of the game, especially the last person online who thanked Microsoft for the experience. To each their own.

I'm with you here. Our provider loses service all the time and the router shuts down of its own accord all the time. Not to mention my ethernet cable is finicky. No way I would have lasted that long.

Great job guys! As a huge Halo fan I salute you as well. *salute*

It's not "move on regardless of quality", it's "Move on, because your community is pretty much dead, and it's the same people every other match."

Unlikely to occur for the next decade or two - the original XBox's problem was its lack of update ability; not sure if the PS2 had the same problem or not - regardless, because of its lack of update capacity, the XBox original titles had limitations in them that could not be reprogrammed to allow the XBox live archeiture to be developed. With modern consoles like the 360 and PS3, the code can be updated, and its highly likely that the code used for multiplayer is controlled by microsoft itself, so microsoft simply have to issue an update that replaces the onboard networking protocol/code... Assuming it works how I think it works.

I don't understand what all the fuss in this thread is about. Sure, they dragged out the end of the Classic Live service and servers, but they gave a game that they (and a lot of us) were fond of a nice send off, not to mention a classy send of for the Live Service over all.

Hell, even after the Last Spartan left Xbox live, he gave a nice little farewell post. One that shows that, while he may have disagreed with the decision made by Microsoft and Bungie, he still loved the game while it lasted. A classy post that some of this threads commentators could do well to learn from.

Well done, you last few Spartans. I salute you.

PS: Oh, and as for the game still being available on the PC, it's not the same and you all know it. The difference in controls is enough to completely change how the game is played.

Surely anyone still playing Halo 2 online probably had an xbox 360, and thus could have picked up Halo 3 (or ODST, if you're mostly there for the multiplayer) easily by now. And could therefore be playing a (theoretically) better version of the same game; one devoid of the duel-wielding needlers of megadeath? Sure, keep Halo 2 going for a couple of days as a farewell/minor show of dissent, but a month seems excessive... Risking your console and internet connection, receiving soaring electricity bills, and rendering yourself unable to play any other games, all to show your support for a game that has newer iterations? I'm impressed by the "Noble 14" and their efforts, but more as an endurance effort than as a game support mechanism.

If it had been battlefront 2 they'd made their stand on, it would have been a whole different story!

EDIT: I am, however, somewhat impressed by the fact that the last guy spent a fair while playing multiplayer by himself. That takes some dedication of some kind.

Wow... Despite your no-doubt hasty edit, it still seems painfully obvious you COMPLETELY missed the point of this whole thing.

OT: It had to end some time, and I applaud those who stuck with it so long. It must have been so lonely, being the last player on there.

My connection drops more or less every 10 minutes... Then again "broadband" is pretty much useless everywhere in Ireland. 3mb is really fucking good where I live...

I want constant fast internet. I want it! *pouts*

I still think it's a joke that they've cut friends and invite matches 'for the sake of progress'
Matchmaking fine, that actually puts some demand on your servers, but point blank saying you can no longer play this game because we don't feel like it anymore is plain dickheadedness.
It's not about server strain, Microsoft would let them play as long as Xbox Live was still running if that were the case. No, the reality is that the network code for many Original Xbox multiplayer games was actually preventing upgrades from being made to the Xbox Live service.

You've might have read about Halo 2 being the sole reason that Xbox Live doesn't allow people to have more than 100 friends for instance. I'm that there are many other issues associated with the non-monolithic networking designs for original Xbox titles.

The network structure for Xbox 360 games is much more uniform and modifiable. The issues that lead Microsoft to cut off original Xbox support shouldn't happen in the future.

Plus there's still Xbox Connect which allows original Xbox users to set up LAN matches over the Internet.

Yeah, my thoughts on this have been made abundantly clear, but I think Graham Stark said it best

'turning what should have been a triumphant last hurrah into a prolonged death rattle.'

Or words to that effect.

And I agree with Onyx, as if that weren't also very very clear by now.

Now *Raises flame shield* go ahead, let the hatred commence.

Halo 2: The Last Spartan Falls

After an epic, month-long battle that could not be won, the last Spartan has left Halo 2 [http://www.bungie.net/Projects/Halo2/default.aspx].

Microsoft announced in early February that it was dropping online support [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98069-Microsoft-Dropping-Online-Support-for-Original-Xbox-Games] for original Xbox consoles and games, a decision which, given the system's age, appeared on the surface to be of little consequence. But nobody stopped to think about the Halo 2 fans who still played online and who decided to use the shutdown as an opportunity to show the world what "die hard" really means.

The plug was pulled on April 15 but a handful of players defied the inevitable by refusing to disconnect. They just kept on playing. A week after the service went dark, there were at least five [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100219-Halo-2-Players-Refuse-to-Leave-Xbox-Live] and even Microsoft, the purported villain of the piece, was rooting for them.

Alas, all good things must come to an end. As of yesterday, only two Spartans remained standing: Agent Windex and Apache N4SIR. Then, at 7:21 EDT, Agent Windex delivered the news. "I just got kicked off guys," he wrote on Bungie's Halo 2 forum [http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=43235214&postRepeater1-p=21]. "Good job Apache, you're the last one."

Apache continued to play the game alone ("I drive the Warty off some mad hills and jumps!") until he too was "forcefully removed" from the Halo 2 servers at 1:58 EST on May 11. "I want to thank the whole Bungie team for an awesome ongoing series and what seems to be a great Reach game," he wrote in a "salute [http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=43235214&postRepeater1-p=22]" to the game. He said disagreed with Microsoft's decision to end support for the game but thanked it anyway for "publishing and supporting Bungie and the Halo games we truly love."

Well played, ladies and gentlemen. Well played indeed.

Why do I now want to buy Halo 2?

Oh yeah... I can't find Halo 1 anywhere.
