Halo: Reach Will Punish Quitters, Says Bungie

Bungie went over this can of worms a long time ago.

You'll only be punished if you continuously quit over and over again. If you quit every now and then, you'll be fine.

You may want to update the OP Logan. It seems people are thinking if they quit at all they'll be punished.

heh, that works for me. What I'd really like is for Logan to edit his post, and maybe at least put in a link to that Bungie quote. Eh, hopefully people read your edited post, atleast.

HEY NO FAIR! If I want to play another game with friends and I was already in one I have the right to quit.

I like this idea; I've been screwed over by ragequitters dozens of times. I don't quit often, and only if I have a legitimate reason, though my internet is a bit dodgy at times. An autobalance would also work, however, and with less controversy. I hope they work something out, I'm looking forward to Reach and would rather have that messed up by a legitimately bad game rather than a bad policy.

So... when people decide they want to stop playing often, they will have them stop playing for longer periods of time.

I have an idea.

If you don't want to stop playing a team game, don't stop playing.

Problem.

Solved.

Now that's some crap. If your game is so bad it comes to THIS... By "bad" I mean not designed well enough to not resort to punishments.

[HEADING=1]What Bungie actually means to say on the matter is here:[/HEADING]

<quote= Bungie>So, you may be wondering why we haven't fixed the quitter problem yet. Thing is, we probably have, but we just haven't turned it on yet.
As we speak, the Banhammer is watching, amassing data about who's been quitting, the manner in which they have quit, and who suffered as a result of that quit. Numbers are feeding into complex heuristics and deep databases, and somewhere in the middle of it, our very own disembodied soul howls for revenge.

"Swing Banhammer, swing!" you cry out. Well, problem is, this is a Beta and we don't want the Banhammer swinging wildly until we know for sure that the numbers coming in are correct, and that the Beta itself is stable and not disconnecting people (creating the illusion of quitting.) Currently, we are only logging data for future action.

So what do we have in store for when it goes live next week? Let me pull back the curtain just a bit:

For starters, our Banhammer is getting more data than even Halo 3 produced, which is going to let us dial it in and more aggressively deal with habitual quitters. The real jerks are going to run into this, and then you're not going to see them online anymore. It'll be great.

Second, quitting a game will forfeit any credits you may have earned for that game. In fact, it may even cost you some credits. We're waiting to see how effective the Banhammer is before deciding exactly how much.

Lastly, and all new for Reach, we have a new type of ban called a Quitter Ban. This is a relatively soft ban, so we will be using it quite aggressively, activating after only a handful of quits and lasting a rather long time. What does it do? A player with a Quitter Ban will be temporarily unable to re-enter Matchmaking for 15-30 minutes following any further quits.

Oh, and we're playing around with some gametypes which end early (think "Sudden Death") when most of a team quits out, so that you don't need to play 8v1 Slayer to 100 (aka. "Hide and Seek".) You may see some of these in Matchmaking if we're unhappy with the other countermeasures.

As custodians of the online experience, we will be monitoring and adjusting out countermeasures as necessary to keep things ticking along nicely, without games being marred by habitual flakes who quit when they don't get the Sniper Rifle first. So in the meantime, enjoy the Beta!
And quit quitting, because we are watching, and it is going into your personal Banhammer dossier.

(Special pre-emptive note: Online game designers are familiar with "virtual guilt", whereby a perfectly upstanding, innocent player will feel irrationally nervous and guilty upon hearing about a potential punishment. And now, you're familiar with the concept too. Well, relax. We are very deliberate about our enforcement policies, and if you're not a habitual quitter, we're not going to ban you for that one time that your internet cut out. And if it cuts out every game, well, you should probably use the downtime between games to call your ISP and get a technician out. It'll be for the greater good.)

[HEADING=1]They are not talking about permanently banning people from the system based on singular acts of rage quitting!
The longest anyone will be banned for is twenty minutes and only if they are frequently quitting from matches, like ten times in a thirty minutes.
[/HEADING]
Thank you Vrex360 for teaching these people all the things that the article conveniently "forgot" to mention.

How about you give players who stay in games better things? For example, at 200 Games fully stayed, you get a new helmet. For every game you quit, you lose 5 games.

Ive had some of the best games because of quiters.
Like one time on Gears of war 2 (before the comps replaced leavers.) me and my friend were forced to go 2 on 5.
It was the most fun I have every had on gears of war 2.

So, in this topic I see several angry users bashing the feature. Then there are one or two people religiously defending the feature.

...lol
That is the Escapist for you.

Also, not defending, we are correcting what Logan did not put in, his post was rather vague, plus many don't even read the article, especially when it comes to Halo.

Personally I'm all for this; people quitting like a ***** and denying me of a proper victory online is one of the rare things that really annoys me

Why do I care said:
DO NOT WANT MAN!
I'm with you. Why should I stick around in a game where I just keep getting my ass handed to me? Hell, if they gave me an option of "unconditional surrender" I'd choose that when such things transpire. There are many many times in games where it's obvious I'm going to lose and I find no enjoyment in being owned moments after I spawn.

This... Is bad. Yeah it can be inconvenient to be left behind while a few members of your team disappear. But they may well have had good reason.
Something came up.
Their connection died.
Or, and this is partly what the system wants to stop it seems, they were sick of being destroyed by the other team, because they happen to suck, so they left for easier pastures. And I've got no problem with that. The only type of quitters that are annoying are those who quit to keep stats up (does Halo have a persistent stat system?), or to grief. And I don't see how this system can differentiate between those. But, I don't really care. Won't be buying the game anyway.
Kindly read through the thread, you questions are answered...

Can't people on the escapist read at all? *sigh* i think from now on, we all should read the article, and then read a bit of the thread, so we get an idea about what's happening -_-'

OT: This is an excellent idea, although i do remember being the only guy on my team on halo 3 came close to winning as well ^_^

Nice to see Bungie care for their fans =3

I'm on Bungie's side with this. This is not a permaban, nor a long term suspension. Quit purposefully, and you're out for about half an hour. It punishes those who quit for no other reason than to just quit and then keeps them out of games for a while. Yeah, I'm behind this. Besides, this has been around for a while. Why all the tears now?

As always, Vrex to the rescue. Thanks for clarifying.

S2 Games had a much harsher system in place in Heroes of Newerth. You had a 'quit' percentage, and if it edged over I think it was 40% (as in, you leave 4/10 games), you could be excluded from "No-Quit" games, which is all anyone EVER made.

I salute Bungie. Good on them in their attempt to deal with douchebags that quit early, quit often.

The people who are whining, are you worried about your own quitting habits? If it doesn't apply to you, why the fuck are you bitching about it?

I did read the thread. I also noted that the only mention of what qualifies as "excessive" was posited by a poster and not made by bungie.

Yes. They do have the freedom to leave the games and abandon their teamates for no reason. If they use that freedom over and over and over, they gain a new freedom: suspension.

Bungie also has the freedom to punish the people who ruin the game for other people.

EDIT: Also, I love how people are freaking out like this hasn't been on Halo 3 for months and months. And how it was on throughout almost the entire Halo: Reach beta, and no one had any problems with it.
