Halo: Reach Will Punish Quitters, Says Bungie

I don't understand why they don't work at the source of the problem rather than trying to punish people for dropping out of the game. Quitters aren't the only ones who unbalance a game. People who might need to drop out to use the bathroom, or people with spotty connections aren't being malicious if they drop.

They should just add bots, or the next time someone kills a member of the team with fewer members they get swapped to the other team.

I would think it would be very difficult to determine someone who is just rage quitting and someone who has something pressing to do right at that moment. This just seems disastrous.

I don't think people have read the article properly. It says that they will probably take into account people's connections. It also says that it will punish people who FREQUENTLY disconnect. I guess this means people who quite multiple times in an hour or so. I personally think that this is a good system because you can't have more people joining in mid-game and so you would often be left in a 1 v 4 situation which is almost impossible. If you join a game you shouldn't leave during the game because it is too hard because then you would leave your team mates against these people with less off a chance and you would leave the other team with no one to play against.

All in all I think that this'll be a good system because it will help stop stranding people in a solo team and punish those who leave for no good reason frequently.

Oh everyone it's Cool, Bungie is just trying out what Blizzard did with putting out a statement 1st to stir up concern before actually deciding weither or not to use it for the betterment of the user-base.

If not(Which I'd be surprized if it actually was Blizzard's plan.) hopefully the "Quiting to much bans" will be temporary. like day-1 4 quits=fine day-2 3 quits=ok day-3 1 quit= 8th quit this weak a warning apon reactivating multipler warning of 3 more quits this week before 2 day removal or something or 10 times in one day. gets you a week long ban or something repeat offenders get extended times.

Becuase if they don't consider connection lost a form of quiting it could become the new way to do it they'd just have to pull the cord/turn off the system or unplug the router and etc.

Jeez, do you guys not know how to read?

1. It's for HABITUAL quitters. During the beta I deliberately quit out of eight games in a row while attempting to get this ban to no avail. If you really quit that many times in a row, then you're just a jerk who likes ruining the game for others, and you deserve a ban.

2. IT'S NOT PERMANENT!!!! It's only a 15 minute time out. If you're being childish and quitting because you got shot in the face, then you deserve to be treated like a child. If you have a legitimate reason to leave, such as you have a real life outside halo, then it will take more than 15 minutes, and the ban won't affect you whatsoever. If your connection sucks and you keep getting dropped, then it should take more than 15 minutes for you to call your ISP and get the problem fixed.

3. There is still an invisible ranking system ensuring that if you suck, you'll end up with other people who suck. Stop claiming that you have the right to quit because you were matched up with pros, because THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

Yep, I love when games deny me access to content I paid for. That's so considerate. /sarcasm

It's honestly a dick move, I have a right to leave. We'll have to see how many times you quit before you're denied access, but I have a feeling this will not be taken well.

Oh great, it is like all those L4D server mods and douche bags that think that everyone that quits is a "rage quitter". Half the time in L4D2 I lose interest after a map or two, and you know, I have a life and have to eat, go to work, and stuff so I can't always sick around for the entire game...

I'm gonna say this right out: Bungie are douchebags now. If I'm new to Halo and accidentally get stuck in a match full of pros, should I just suck it up now? If I'm not okay with the game, I should have the right to leave. Even worse, what if your interrupted while gaming and have to go. If this happens some times, then what? First that bonus for PC gamers, now this? Thank you, Bungie, you've made me not want to buy this game.

It's true, ragequitters are a problem, but it's better off when they leave, otherwise they'll just whine and not care. I've played Halo 3 very much, and I've been stuck in impossible games over and over. It's not fun to have to quit. And I think it's my bloody right to leave the game if I'm not having fun. Shouldn't it be fun for everyone?
It's a step in the right direction, Bungie is not full of douchebags, they are taking the interest of the consumer at heart. People who act like children on the internet by rage quitting can really take the piss out of a game, its the main reason why I stopped playing SF4 online, because it became too much of a hassle to deal with.

I liken this all to what Blizzard did with the whole real ID proposition. It was an excellent idea, get rid of the anonymity of players so that the level of dickitude on the internet would take a noticeable drop. It pains me that they pulled out of the decision because a vocal minority on the internet bitched enough.

Point is, griefing, rage quitting, and just being a dick on Multiplayer games are a huge problem because they effect the core of the online experience, and you cannot fault a company for trying tone that down.

Besides, the guys at Bungie aren't stupid, so I am sure that they will set it up so that you don't have to worry about quitting laggy games

Is this so urgent you have to quit a game to do it? Multiple times in a short timeframe? You don't get penalised for quitting a few times, the punishment is to discourage habitual quitters.

I'm baffled by people who actually think this is a bad idea. I seriously wonder if you all mash the quit button every time you start to lose at anything.
Could be I find a load of games with lag, could be I'm having an off day with loads of issues... either way, I think this sounds a bit inflexible.
It's very flexible. It was tested in the beta and the only people complaining where the exact kind of people Bungie intended to target: poor sports who were acting very selfishly and detracting from the game, consistently. So basically, it was a huge success.

Here's an idea, I'm gonna AFK instead of quit when I'm bored. No penelty and you get screwed over while the other team/players gain all their points.

(I honestly don't understand the problem with quitters personally, its a casual game, if its no longer fun, why not quit? Granted I'm not a Halo player at all, so feel free to shed some light)
It's a game where the enjoyment is sorely diminished when you have to put up with people quitting all the time. Discouraging this behaviour will hopefully mean better games for the majority of the players. The people who enjoy quitting on a regular basis because things don't go their way aren't the people Bungie should be catering to, and they don't. At the end of the day, they make games they want to play. This is their thing.

If you want to play Halo, you should really already be on board with that.

As has been mentioned before.
IF YOU QUIT OCCASIONALY YOU WILL NOT BE PENALISED.
IF YOU QUIT TEN TIMES IN A ROW WITHIN HALF AN HOUR(give or take) YOU BE GIVEN A 15 MINUTE TIMEOUT.
THIS WILL EXTEND OR DECREASE DEPENDING ON IF YOU CONTINUE TO QUIT.
LEARN TO MANAGE TIME PROPERLY. IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE INTERRUPTED IN THE NEXT 15 MINUTES DONT START A RANKED MATCH.

Also to quote bungie:
"If you quit because of an internet problem we wont ban you. If it happens multiple times in the same day/couple of day, then maybe you should contact your internet provider while waiting for the ban to be up"
Not that I don't believe you (or will be affected since not getting Reach) but, where in the article or source we're these details mentioned?

I'm quite unaffected by this.
People get too attached to their K/D ratio.

I've let those days go past me, and as a result have become nice enough to get 'toasty' :D

What, they basically ban people for not playing their game???

Rage quitting or not, this is bullshit. There is virtually no way of differentiating people who genuinely quit for legitimate reasons and those who quit just to irritate people. Such a system should most certainly not implemented.

You know what I do when it's time for dinner or time to go to work? I stop playing games. I seldom have to quit out mid-game, because I know I don't have time for ten minutes of Halo when I have a train to catch in 12 minutes and I don't have my shoes on yet.
Besides which, you're describing a vanishingly small number of instances where you have legit reasons to quit out and haven't cottoned onto one simple concept. OCCASIONAL quitting will not result in bans or other punishments. HABITUAL quitting will be.

Unless you try to slip in games and suddenly leave for meals ten times a day, the system won't bother you. And besides, you go to work or eat a meal, you're gonna be gone at least fifteen minutes right? So even if you get punished it has no effect on you whatsoever.

They're going to implement a system that punishes people for quitting the game?

Uhh... that's mildly retarded.

No thanks Bungie.

I like the way you understand the concept here, and haven't gone off half-cocked after reading the headline. It's obviously you have a full grasp of the issues and are not at all ignorant. I bet you even read all the comments in this thread, too.

Okay I've loved just about everything about Reach...Up until now.

Punishment is never a good idea in an online game. I don't think anyone should take a game that seriously.

How about instead of punishing people who leave, you reward the people that stay? With extra exp? That would rock.

Well that seems quite fair actually.

Hold up?... What if some thing comes up that forces me to quit the game?. Like say an emergency in the house or I get told one of my family members or friends are in trouble and need my assistance?. What if the power cuts out in the house?, my connection goes all funny?.

I commend what they are trying to do but well, I hope they take these things into account. I do hate it when my whole team quits and I'm sat there on my own trying to fight a full team of players that are more then likely better then me. I hope that they give my an opportunity to explain my self for quitting. I've never rage quitted, I've been pissed off... I've been frustrated but I've never quit... I've waited it out till the end of the game before leaving. Even when I was on a team of Americans who wanted to take this piss out of the Brit.

While it would be nice for a source to prove this, I'll cautiously take your word for it. If this is the case... I guess my problems are sorted.

I lose interest in stuff really quickly, and with eating... well... not always sure when I am actually eating (as strange as that sounds). The only time I've seen a game that had a punishment for quitting which actually worked was the zombie mod for CoD4 where if you were chosen as the first zombie and quit within a minute it brought your rank down 5-10 levels.
