I can see a big problem with the idea of a penultimate video game system that can be summarized in one word: monopoly. No one company could have the rights to a single service like that.

Cloud technology more than likely will either have a huge launch where people take advantage, or the cost of using the service will be so prohibitive as to make people say phooey and pashaw to that nonsense. We're still waiting for Steam Cloud...

That's an admirable goal, but console unification won't be coming any time soon. We're still divided amongst PCs and Consoles, let alone the different variations of consoles themselves.

Besides haven't PCs been dying for the last, what 15 years?

Ok, what is Hideo Kojima on? I'm sure some of my classmates will want to know.

I rather like that photo they put of Hideo Kojima. Rather appropriate as I think he's a quack.
I'm sorry, I stopped liking MGS a long time ago, you know, when they actually let you play the fucking game as opposed to making you sit through an unbearably long cut scene...

Also.. call me old fashioned... but I kinda like my games staying in one place, on a console.
The thought of being followed around by my scores while trying to read text messages doesn't appeal to me... I kinda like my gaming being in one central sanctuary from the world.

I get where he's coming from, I do, but I don't think this stuff will be on the cards for another ten years or so. Hopefully I'll be less pessimistic then. (I know, bizarre sentiment)

There is always one person in the crowd who always says that in few years that some technology will no longer be prevalent and that some upcoming product will magically revolutionize the way we do things. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, we'll just have to wait and see.

Honestly that does seem like a logic direction for software to take. I don't believe we'll really see it phase out consoles for at least another ten or twenty years though.
I agree about the software direction. It will go the same way as the disks that they are put on now.

I hope that this will never come to pass. Because from a business point of view, this will put the consumers at great harm. Let's compare it with Internet here. I mean, there's only two or three internet providers and we need to fork over tons of cash. I need to pay 42 bucks per month for 25 gigs. With no real other benefits. Same will happen to games. The less competition, the more the prices will soar.
I noticed recently that steam downloads for me are no longer metered, so they dont go toward my limit for monthly downloads

Don't worry, Australia will never use On-Live or similar gadgets for particular reasons

I really would cry if Cloud gaming became the norm. Sorry but I want to actually own my games and I refuse to pay a monthly fee on top of 60$ to play a game.

Pretty much my opinion on the matter. It sounds crazy, but hey, I'm no expert.
Could you guys be misinterpreting popularity of consoles instead of popularity of video gaming?

I mean i think the reason people like playing a video game is well... because they like playing video games.. not because they like using a PS3.

Therefore games will still be popular no matter what medium you are using.

Hideo Kojima Believes Consoles are Dying

According to Hideo Kojima, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 aren't the future of how people will play videogames.

At a news conference held for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, series visionary Hideo Kojima talked about what he thinks the future of gaming will be, and how it probably won't include consoles. He thinks that cloud computing will become the norm, where the same videogame experiences can go from device to device no matter where players are.

"In the near future, we'll have games that don't depend on any platform," he said. "Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel -- wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience."

What Kojima describes is the experience that technologies like OnLive [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97182-OnLive-Fully-Detailed-in-Columbia-University-Presentation] aim to bring. Theoretically, they would allow AAA videogames to be streamed to anything from a television to an iPhone and therefore free from specific console restrictions.

At the same conference, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kawano told reporters: "It's a bold prediction. We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge." Apparently, this was said with a nervous smile.

Kojima also said the development of Peace Walker for the PSP, coming to Japan at the end of April and other territories in June, was an experiment to find out what would work for portable gaming in the future he envisions. "I looked at this in part as an experiment aimed at the future," Kojima revealed. It sounds like he's really putting his faith in services like OnLive. With the massive popularity of current generation consoles, I don't think Kojima's prediction will come true anytime soon, but who knows right?

Hideo Kojima believes consoles are dying?

Hideo Kojima is wrong.

A console is a dedicated gaming platform, and while it's specific characteristics will change over time, its purpose (playing video games), will remain, hence the console will not die out so long as people play any semblance of what we call a game.

Until unlimited internet is the standard everywhere (it's only just now even becoming feasible in Australia for anyone other than businesses) cloud computing isn't going to happen. However, I can definitely see this being the future.

Some gamers will hate the change at first because people seem to really treasure the physical copies of their disks for some reason... I never understood this. Digital Distribution, for example, is already taking over with PC's and its happening on a small scale on the consoles too. In the long run its better because it takes up no space on your shelf and your games are safe on your account forever to download and play whenever you want. It seems like cloud computing is the next logical step, because then you'll require no computing power at all to play all the latest games, and you can play all the same games on whatever platforms you like.

The only downside I can see is a lack of mods, but lets be honest, the quality of mods is exaggerated by PC gamers. Most of them are mediocre at best, and I can count on one hand the good games that were released in the past 4 years that accumulated a decent amount of 'good' mods.

OnLive will fail though, simply because we (and our internet connections) are not ready for it yet.
