I suffer from cronic back pain and sometimes depression but what I usually do is hang out with my friends and smoke a big fat BONG and blaze that shit till the sun goes down. It totally helps!

Kinda curious, how do my fellow Escapists coup with physical pain? Assuming pain-killers are unavailable. Emotional pain too if you've experienced it, and if so could you explain how emotional pain works?

Reason for asking is because I have recently broken my leg and foot in a glorious feat of de-evolution (jumped off a friggin house) and realized that, in an attempt to take my mind off the pain, I make an absurd amount of really bad sarcastic jokes.
How do I coup with pain? Politically to dethrone pleasure!

If you're asking how I cope with pain, emotionally, if I know the person wasn't trying to hurt me I don't blame them. I don't get angry. Physically, if it's bad I will try to seek out painkillers. If not, I'll try and busy myself in some task to take my mind off it.

I really scare myself with this, but I have a strange thing were I can hurt myself, but not feel any pain.
An example is, a few years back I woke up with a limp, I thought it was nothing and continued on with my day, the next day it's still there so I decide to see a doctor about it, turns out I had broken my leg and hadn't realised, I still don't know what I done to break it and how the hell it never hurt.
I know exactly what you mean. There are two scars on my right hip I have no memory of getting whatsoever. You'd think something leaving two dirty great scars would hurt like a mother fucker, and that I'd remember it, right?

Physical pain: I basically endure it. I don't really do much special and often forget about parts of my body that are still injured occasionally and use them normally for a quick reminder why I was using my left hand today.

Emotional pain: As far as how it feels; draining. Just about any negative emotion seems to drain you physically, leaving you with little energy to spend (Anger is a half exception; as it will cause adrenaline to pump and give you more energy while angry but if you are angry for a while when you calm down the mental exhaustion catches back up). I typically if I am feeling down, remind myself that I won't feel better by staying down and shake it off. Unless the source of the problem is fixed however this solution may need to be repeated constantly when your mind tries to slip back into feeling bad.

If the pain is unbearable I faint. If it's not I suck it up and try to get help and relief for the pain. If it's annoying long term pain i just take painkillers. If it's emotional pain I try not to think about it and meditate.

I either deal with it and move on, do something to take my mind off of it, or inflict pain in another part of my body to take my mind off of it (pretty weird, but it works. Just like, pin-pricking a finger or something).

As far as emotional pain goes, I'm awful. I got dumped by the only woman I've ever truly loved two weeks ago and spent most of the time between now and then drinking and crying in the bathtub.

I man the fuck up and concentrate on it. This will cause the pain to intensify which sounds counterproductive, but if you do it right it's like the pain comes in waves and you're riding those waves. The more I think about it the less sense it makes, but somehow this makes it easier to bear. If it doesn't work, there's always intoxication.
I also have a bit of a habit of hurting the part of my body that's hurting, but that's usually when I'm drunk. The idea behind it is that something is hurting because my body isn't producing enough endorphins, and this is happening because the pain isn't intense enough. So, to feel less pain, I need more endorphins, which requires me to cause myself more pain. It's exactly as retarded as it sounds, but as I mentioned this idea is usually inspired by alcohol, which numbs pain anyway so it's all good, right until I sober up and realise I'm about to spend a week on holiday in a very hilly area whilst barely being able to walk.

And it depends on what is causing the emotional pain. But I normally hide my emotional pain anyway even though my fiancé knows me well enough where he can tell if something is wrong with me. We'll usually talk it out, or in other words he'll pry it out of me. xD

I've never really experienced physical pain as much as I have with emotional pain. I'm a tomboy though and I have many scars on my legs from climbing trees and falling out of them...etc. xD I never broken a bone before though so I can't say that much on the subject.

Ouch. I feel your pain. I've had 5 in the last 4 years, and it sucks harder than Megan Fox reciting Shakespeare.
Interesting analogy lol. Yea passing them can be a *****, but surgery can be WORSE. I just had 6 stones removed, and I was pissing razorblades for a week, I do not recommend it lol.

It depends on the severity. If it's just normal pain then I just deal with it. If it's "mind-numbing, can't keep still, you should go to the ER" kind of pain (as it is with the abdominal pain I seem to get once every few months) then I use a breathing technique my mother taught me. Breathe slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth. Or is it the other way around? Either way it at least gives the illusion of lessening the pain.

As for emotional pain, I used to cut. But after therapy, I now either watch a comedic movie, look at Eddie Izzard videos on youtube or massacre things on Prototype depending on what the emotional pain is based off of.

I cope with sharp pain by getting angry. When you stub your toe or hit your funny bone, getting angry and punching something that cant break/ roaring (seriously) helps the pain disappear.

May sound stupid and slightly insane, but it works for me!

Lingering pain, I try to get through it. Immediate pain, like stubbing my toe, I swear and move on.
And emotional pain, I haven't really considered it.

Reminds me of when my cousin broke his nose and didn't realize it was broken. Granted he felt all the pain but just wrote it off as being, "a little sore or something,".

Anyways, I cope with my pain by sleeping. Fastest way of coping! But some people can't sleep with all the pain. So that's when you refer to some strong anesthetic! :D

With emotional pain, I sort of just wallow about. Not doing anything, not really feeling anything. Actually, the last time I got depressed, I was devoid of emotion like an empty shell. But that's only with big things, haha.

Oh, I would wait to pass a hundred before I had surgery for one. I can handle the stones, but the stint they put in is too much for me. I can barely walk 20 ft without doubling over with one in.

Physical Pain: I go to something else that'll take my mind off of it.

Emotional: I try not to think about it and go out and have fun.
