I view them at night usually . . . . with binoculars. . .while hiding in a tree.

Close, but no cigar.
You could say that's one of the functions of the thread as well, but the main purpose is more along the lines of "Let Jonluw wallow in the nostalgia of the days when he was more community-oriented and internet-extroverted", as well as trying to see how the general sense of community is doing in the forums.
That is naturally going to include some back-patting. Which is fine with me.

I have to give you credit for at least realizing to some degree your own double-standard, but it really weirds me out that there are people who think like you do. Is it really all that difficult to accept that people like things, and, occasionally like them enough to do things like base their avatar or username around it? It's really no different to anyone with, say, Fallout or Adventure Time themed usernames/pics. You're reading into it far, far too much. "He/she has a certain avatar, therefore they must be a real-life failure"? That's a very strange conclusion to draw.

I personally love MLP. I don't use an MLP themed based avatar, but hey. I'm sure there's someone, somewhere out there who hates the fact that I use an actual photo of myself as my ID.
Well, they don't have to be unpopular in real life, I just can't think of any other reason for so many people outside the show's catchment professing love for it in such ludicrous ways. Sorry to break it to you guys, but it isn't some work of art that works on many levels. It might be comforting, or regressive, but it isn't anything other than an above average showed aimed at young female teens.

So, herein lies the problem: things that are merely decent will attract some ardent admirers who profess their love for the thing (think of people with, say, Dexter avatars); some people who like it, but don't go out of their way to promote it; and a lot more people who either don't care or don't like it. In normal circumstances, decent things attract a noticeably small minority who'll actively promote that thing. From this we can conclude that one of two things is true:

1) The Escapist has qualities that especially appeals to those in the promoting minority group
2) The promoting minority group isn't small

But, if the promoting minority group isn't small, then there must be some reason for this. If we look at other things that have had large promoting minority groups that consist of people outside the catchment, they've all played upon some sense of nonfulfillment with real life - Harry Potter permitted young adults to escape the fact that they were rapidly leaving their teens and twenties behind, for instance.

Perhaps I'm being over-analytical, but this reeks to me of Anonymous for carebears.

EDIT:

Fair enough then! Nostalgia is a good reason to do things.

I suppose the forum's population has ballooned up since you first joined, so it must be a very different place now.

I actually have a medical condition, whereby I have an aneurysm if I don't get back patted at least 3 times a day.

True story.

There are too many people here for me to remember individual personalities. Unless... it's someone whom I just happen to see a lot, or it's someone who quotes me... those peeps I tend to not forget. I won't name names... xP

i recognise some of the posters on here, mostly those that are funny or have an interesting avatar, but you can group the users into these groups:

- 'really intelligent', have horrible social skills and are a misanthrope

- generally nice and gives helpful advice

- troll

- MLP lover
This, is correct. I will add though - "intelligent" ones are also very, very snobby. And thats about 2 thirds of the forum.

I think that's deserving of something.

Congratulations!
We should all pat eachother's backs egos more for our internet-achievements.

Nah, it hasn't grown that much since 2010.
It has, however, grown a good deal since my lurking days, which is the time from when most of my romantic notions about the forums are rooted.
I started visiting this site back when Yahtzee did the Halo 3 review, which was back in 2007 I think.
Didn't start regularly browsing the forums 'till 08-09 I think though.

It's just that the last remnant members of the times when the forum was smaller (i.e. the internet celebs) that I had something resembling an emotional attachment to have disappeared.

Simple answer:

Far more intelligent than the rest of humanity
And this is how I view a lot of Escapists - people who think (notice the stress on that word) things like that. The type of people who think that just because they know how to spell (and not always very well) and weren't the best at socialising, that this constitutes a large degree of intelligence and differentness. The would-be cynics, pseudo-intellectuals and misanthropes of the internet.

That being said, I do see others that I have no issue with. I just wouldn't want to meet most members of the userbase.

There are a few guys I recognise by their avatars but I don't really know anyones personality or anything. It's like when your at school and you recognise faces of other students but you have no idea who they are because you've never spoken to them.
Anyway from what I can pick up the majority are well educated and have well thought out opinions that I can normally come to some understanding with.

I have seen a few idiots who were then quickly banned and the occasional person who starts an argument but generally your pretty nice guys.

Okay, let's see. These are probably the groups I use to lump people into. (Even if you all are unique little snowflakes and I love all of you equally. Except <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles>you. I hate you.)

People I know: These are the people I recognize by name or by their terribly unique avatar. I'll probably know how you type and I'll know how to respond if you decide to talk to me. Which of course rarely happens unless you're in...

People I know well: These are people I talk to rather frequently. No, I don't necessarily like all of the people in this group, but I'll at least know you quite well and I'll talk to you fairly often, either in a friendly way or by criticizing the very land you stand on just because you're on it.

People with poor spelling/grammar: Look, I know. It's the internet, and we don't all have to type perfectly all of the time. (That is, unless you're me in which case the smallest unintentional mistake means 5 whippings.) But if you are typing in a way that makes it difficult for me to read, then I simply won't read what you wrote. There are going to be dozens of other comments that won't suffer from this problem, so if you want my attention, you had better learn to spell, or stop being so lazy that u tiep lik this.

People with avatars I dislike: If you happen to have the misfortune of having an avatar I don't like, well first off I'd need to ask you why you do this to me. Do you hate me so much that you can't respect my feelings in this matter? Did I personally offend you? Yes, this goes for you MLP people. (Well, most of you guys. A couple of them are kind of funny in a really creepy way but they get a pass anyway.) If I don't like your avatar, then I may judge you, silently, behind your back. And you'll know because I'll lace my response to you with sarcasm and also WATCH OUT FOR ME I'M RIGHT BEHIND YOU WITH A KNIFE.

People with stupid opinions (read: opinions I don't agree with): I don't care what you have to say and therefore I am not going to listen to your post. If I think that the sky will fall tomorrow and crush us all, and you don't, YOU ARE WRONG AND I DON'T LIKE YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE STUPID AND UGLY AND SMELL FUNNY. Obviously.

People who fit into other categories: If you haven't been mentioned yet, then you fit into the other category with all the rest of the little monkeys. You are neither special enough to be noticed, nor terrible enough to be hated. So I'll probably just ignore you because I have no idea who you are.

Note: The preceding information may or may not be entirely made up and should not be taken as fact unless you want to. In that case, it's your fault for being offended because this disclaimer is basically telling you that I'm doing this just for fun and that I'm now rambling just because if you're still reading at this point, you must love me.

Note #2: I still hate <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles>you.

What about those of us who are more intelligent than the majority.

I mean, my mother wouldn't lie to me right?

right!?

Well, I'm not a regular forum goer, but I think that the escapist users are an intelligent group filled with diverse opinions. I don't necessarily agree with you all, but I love that we DO disagree. It's what discussion should be.

Ha! You missed you missed your indefinite article there, didn't you? The correct phrasing is "these are the people I recognized by name or by a terribly unique avatar."

An argument can be made that that the modern English language is not as strict on its articles, but that argument would be wrong. Most nouns still need their articles.

So, who administers the whippings? Susan Arendt?

Yep, I did.

And I administer them, like that one character does in The Da Vinci Code (Silas?).
