Well, they don't have to be unpopular in real life, I just can't think of any other reason for so many people outside the show's catchment professing love for it in such ludicrous ways. Sorry to break it to you guys, but it isn't some work of art that works on many levels. It might be comforting, or regressive, but it isn't anything other than an above average showed aimed at young female teens.Shiny Koi said:I have to give you credit for at least realizing to some degree your own double-standard, but it really weirds me out that there are people who think like you do. Is it really all that difficult to accept that people like things, and, occasionally like them enough to do things like base their avatar or username around it? It's really no different to anyone with, say, Fallout or Adventure Time themed usernames/pics. You're reading into it far, far too much. "He/she has a certain avatar, therefore they must be a real-life failure"? That's a very strange conclusion to draw.
I personally love MLP. I don't use an MLP themed based avatar, but hey. I'm sure there's someone, somewhere out there who hates the fact that I use an actual photo of myself as my ID.
Fair enough then! Nostalgia is a good reason to do things.Jonluw said:Close, but no cigar.BGH122 said:As for the thread itself, it seems like another 'let's pat each other on the back for being escapist-famous' thread for the high activity members to indulge in.
You could say that's one of the functions of the thread as well, but the main purpose is more along the lines of "Let Jonluw wallow in the nostalgia of the days when he was more community-oriented and internet-extroverted", as well as trying to see how the general sense of community is doing in the forums.
That is naturally going to include some back-patting. Which is fine with me.
I actually have a medical condition, whereby I have an aneurysm if I don't get back patted at least 3 times a day.Jonluw said:Close, but no cigar.BGH122 said:As for the thread itself, it seems like another 'let's pat each other on the back for being escapist-famous' thread for the high activity members to indulge in.

This, is correct. I will add though - "intelligent" ones are also very, very snobby. And thats about 2 thirds of the forum.Master Steeds said:i recognise some of the posters on here, mostly those that are funny or have an interesting avatar, but you can group the users into these groups:
- 'really intelligent', have horrible social skills and are a misanthrope
- generally nice and gives helpful advice
- troll
- MLP lover

I suppose the forum's population has ballooned up since you first joined, so it must be a very different place now.
And this is how I view a lot of Escapists - people who think (notice the stress on that word) things like that. The type of people who think that just because they know how to spell (and not always very well) and weren't the best at socialising, that this constitutes a large degree of intelligence and differentness. The would-be cynics, pseudo-intellectuals and misanthropes of the internet.Dutch 924 said:Simple answer:

That being said, I do see others that I have no issue with. I just wouldn't want to meet most members of the userbase.
Ha! You missed you missed your indefinite article there, didn't you? The correct phrasing is "these are the people I recognized by name or by a terribly unique avatar."Marter said:People I know: These are the people I recognize by name or by terribly unique avatar.
People with poor spelling/grammar: Look, I know. It's the internet, and we don't all have to type perfectly all of the time. (That is, unless you're me in which case the smallest unintentional mistake means 5 whippings.)
Yep, I did.Giest4life said:Ha! You missed you missed your indefinite article there, didn't you? The correct phrasing is "these are the people I recognized by name or by a terribly unique avatar."
An argument can be made that that the modern English language is not as strict on its articles, but that argument would be wrong. Most nouns still need their articles.
So, who administers the whippings? Susan Arendt?
