And I don't care.

This is nothing but a tired juvenile revelation that most people come to realise is full of crap.

I can't help but feel that such an accusation as 'people are assholes' or 'I have no faith in humanity' requires such a profound lack of empathy as to border on the sociopathic. More of an incitement upon the speaker than the subject of their ignorant, arrogant bile.
You, sir, have clearly never worked a day in your life. From what you've said here, I can gather your probably some 12 year old boy trolling the forums for kicks. Well, there's no place for asinine tripe here. People CAN be assholes, and if you didn't rely on mommy for a living, you'd know that. The OP is just venting, don't be a fuckin' asshole about it. Stop trolling and gtfo.
If we replaced the OPs claim of "humanity" and changed it to "a certain race in humanity" would you argue the same? Certainly not. The OP is the child in this, attributing the actions of one person to all of humanity. Then demanding that humans sympathize with them. Right...

"GAWD, PEOPLE ARE SUCH ASSHOLES!!! THIS ONE GUY ACTED LIKE A DICK TO ME, THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE IS FUCKED."

honestly, grow up and accept that, yes, there ARE assholes in the world.
I'm tired of all this melodramatic bullshit.
"THE REAL WORLD IS SCARY AND CRUEL, THEREFORE I'VE LOST FAITH IN ALL OF HUMANITY!!! SOME PEOPLE ARE DICKS, SO THERE MUST BE NO GOOD LEFT IN THE WORLD!!!"

I don't recall him ever "demanding sympathy." Nobody forced you to read the thread. Also, I don't see how changing it from "humanity" to "a certain race in humanity" makes it anything near the same concept. He's making a broad commentary about an apparent lack of common courtesy in humanity as a whole as he perceives it, not being a racist or hating on anyone. The guy's just venting. Being an asshole about it just proves his point.

I am not going to deny that the OP was a bit overdramatic, but come on, what are we, 5? Don't have to hate on a guy for pulling out the melodrama.

Hi guys, I lost faith in the entirety of humanity so I thought I'd come to a discussion board frequented by human beings and discuss with you this revelation and perhaps gain a deeper understanding of why humans are so aweful, because I have faith that you guys can come up with something to support it or debunk it.

Oh wait.....
you sir have earned this voucher, redeemable for the sum of 1 internets.

Anyone who truly lost all faith in humanity would not be on an internet forum creating threads about how they lost their faith in humanity. They would instead move as far away from humans becoming hermits and shunning all humans. If you wanted to come on here and complain sbout an asshole who was rude to you that's great but don't dress it up by saying it reflects on humanity as a whole.

"Faith" is not something to have in humanity. Faith in this context implies specific knowledge of how people will react to certain situations. In case you hadn't noticed, there are several billion of us. At the least there will be several million different reactions to a given situation possible throughout the scope of human experience.
To have "faith" in humanity is to be ignorant of human nature, I say. So to the depressed-sounding iteration of "I have no faith in humanity", my response is "Good for you, Timmy. Now you may begin the learning process."

I dont know, but youd probably go crazy trying to find a desirable answer to that question, not to mention that there might not even be an answer to that age-old question.

People aren't assholes. That guy was an asshole.

Maybe most people are assholes, maybe not. Either way, lumping the whole of humanity in with the assholes is not the answer. Blind misanthropy helps no-one, you'll just end up alientating people for no good reason.

For lack of a friendlier way to phrase this: Stop whining and learn to deal with it.

That actually sounds pretty funny. No offense, but I like stories like this, and a bit of assholism here and there. Otherwise, you could always go into the wild...

3 words for you... The Dallai Llama.

Now a question... Why are people so willing to ignore the plentiful examples of humans not being assholes whenever they feel like being cynical?
Because people are assholes :D
ok ok. So a lot of people act like douches, boo hoo. But the moment we use that as an excuse to say that we have 'no faith in humanity' is the moment when we stop trying to make things better. If we give up, and ignore all the perfectly justified reasons to have hope we make our own self-fulfilling prophecy. When we are content to just think that everything is shit, and to sit back and passive-aggressively whine about how everything is shit, we make everything around us seem shit by just taking that attitude.

Humanity is responsible for many horrible things, such as the Europe/Africa/America Slave Trade.

Humanity is also responsible for ending many horrible things, again, such as the Slave Trade.

There are three types of people in this world... The people who spread evil, The people who keep evil at bay, and the people who lose hope and ultimately do fuck all for anyone. Who do you want to be?

Well, that's depressing.
Either try to make the world a better place or leave it.[footnote]not suggesting you kill yourself BTW[/footnote] Or just don't care, which begs the question of why you would put this up in the first place.

Come on, Escapist. I thought we grew up past this whole "I have zero faith in humanity" phase.

You know, over the years The Escapist has matured like a teenager. First, we got into gaming at 13 (the pretend age I'm making up for the Escapist since it was launched in 2005 and it's now on its sixth year) and it was so hardcore and we constantly discussed it while slowly branching out to other things. We discovered anime and other cool things like that. We were happy and blissful, not really too far along in our puberty. Then, two years later puberty fully hit us. We got bullied in high school. We decided that we had no faith in humanity and that everyone was assholes. We got over it a bit later and focused back on our gaming and our discussions while occasionally laughing about some stupid girly book like Twilight.

Then, we hit that phase again and oh boy did this one suck, but we pulled through and we were a fully-fledged eighteen year old and became an "art hipster" for a while where we constantly discuss the artistic merits of our medium, but even that passed after a while and then at the age of nineteen (this year), we found out what the hell ponies were and were like "OMFG NO WAI THIS AWESOME" like a lot of other nineteen year olds.

...That made more sense in my head and sounded cooler there.

I read his whole post and I agree with the first few replies. I know he said he had other reasons but the one he decided to mention about a guy who didn't want to pay for a drink. If that is the big one that pushed him over the edge, it makes the other reasons look weak by comparison. There are situations where one could lose faith in humanity and be taken completely serious. "Some guy took off with out a soda" is not one of them. If he has any better reasons, he should have stated them but he didn't so we have to assume this is the best one he had.

It would take forever to go over all of them, so...I'll just give an example of what happened at work the other day. There was a guy who ordered a large soda, so, I gave it to him. Then after drinking part of it, he asks how much it is, despite there being a GIANT menu sign behind the counter, and so I tell him, and he says "Nah, that's too much."

So...he dug through the tip jar for the cash, handed it to me, then left. I was so stunned that I didn't even say anything...and he didn't even give me enough to pay for the thing. (Sales tax...)

Why are people such assholes?
You should consider yourself lucky. At least there aren't assholes in your country who would stone you to death for Adultery.

Well, I have more faith in humanity than you do, but to address this situation this is probably your fault. In general when working at fast food places, it's common sense to not hand over the food until you've been paid, specifically for this reason. A petty thing, but if I was your manager I probably would have chewed you out for that. Indoors it's less of a problem, but especially at drive thrus there is a problem with people handing over the food first and having the guys drive away before they pay.

Ideally you probably should have gone outside and gotten his liscence plate number, and then called the police. Granted he only committed a misdemenor, but the police are probably going to talk to him, and get you the money.

All told what you did was a pretty common mistake, and hopefully you learned from it. I've dealt with things like that before when I worked casino security (dealing with the food courts and such), not common, but in such cases security dispatch would get a call, I'd get radioed with a description, and me and a few other blazers would go have a word with the guy. Typically followed by telling off the empolyee about being more careful, before (or after) the manager tells him the same thing.

Nothing earth shattering, just be more careful, the suckiest part of it is that the guy got away with it.

I have always found that outright misanthropy is really an expression of self-hatred rather than hatred of others.

We are all far more alike than we are different. I try to keep this in mind when I am having bad days like you appear to be experiencing.

Why did you give the idiot customer a product without making him pay for it first? In some other jobs you would've been disciplined and the price of the product deducted from your paycheck.

If you loose faith in humanity because of shitty people, then you need to grow up. There is always going to be cancer, but you have to see past that.

Do you have no faith in your friends?
Do you have no faith in yourself?

If the answer to those questions is "no," then what the fuck are you doing not liking the two things you can choose to change?

Humanity as a whole learns and unlearns behaviors and can change at any point in time if the individual honestly chooses to. It is one of our traits.

With that said, humans are also naturally greedy, just like any other animal. This is why resisting corruption and sacrifice are very honorable things to do. However, this is also why the OP experienced what he did. But the OP made a major fuck up by GIVING HIM THE SODA BEFORE HE PAYED FOR IT, which is stupid and nieve on his part. Live, learn, and grow out of this "I've given up on humanity" bullshit.
