Yeah I know how metal has a vast amount of subgenres.
SOAD don't use the typical super duper downtuned guitar tone that numetal uses and deal with teen angst so I don't consider them numetal.
I haven't heard any folk from 3 Inches of Blood but they are power metal.
Don't like Nightwish that much but yeah they are operatic metal
I just said Megadeth had guttural vocals because the beginning of The Conjuring sounds black metalish. I know they are thrash traditionally.

If your gonna reccommend death metal. You gotta include one of these:

Morbid Angel
Death
Autopsy
At The Gates
Entombed
Suffocation
Gorguts
Nocturnus
Athiest
Demilich
The first two "death metal" bands are good recommendations. I add my vote for those two.
Whats wrong with Suffocation or Gorguts?
Yeah man what wrong with Athiest and Nocturnus?

Hey you two, don't fret. I didn't say anything was wrong with them. I just haven't heard them, so I can't vote on those.

For a rainy day when things seem more complicated than they should.

For those moments which demands an ambient backdrop.

For channeling the furor and joie de vivre of a lifetime.

I wasn't trying to attack your knowledge on metal, so I hope it didn't come across that way. Was more expanding on it for the OP in case he isn't familier with metal.

Your SOAD comment is completely valid, so I can agree with it. They definitely don't fit much of the numetal standards but usually are listed as a numetal band.

3 Inches of Blood have a power metal feel, but their content flows into the Folk Metal genre.

As for the gentleman who said that Operatic Metal, Epic Metal, and Quest Metal doesn't exist, that is incorrect. While the quest metal subgenre really fits into Folk and/or Epic, Operatic is slightly different from Symphonic and Epic is a step above even those.

Wow, I can't believe so many people have brought so many (similar) suggestions and yet no one has mentioned Led Zeppelin. Seriously, you may think they're overrated or aren't a band that you can get into, but seriously sit down and give their music a chance. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Ehh, Mother May I and Erica Court both struck me as sort of filler-y. To each his own, I guess.

I'll admit, if you're new to the band, the vocals can be a bit irritating. However, if you're like me and really love male singers with high voices (Mars Volta, Radiohead, Rush, etc.) it's not that much of an issue. (Also, if you really want "sounds like a girl", go and listen to pretty much anything off Second Stage Turbine Blade) Don't get me wrong, I'm obsessed with them too (saw them live twice, met them once (they're actually really cool guys)). They were really my first love, musically.

Also, to contribute more to this thread, if you don't mind techno, you should check out Renard. This guy's making some of the most awesome techno today.

Haha, that's true, but surprisingly, a few of my friends hadn't given them a real look until recently and when they did, they ended up becoming superfans.

The Beatles are wussies. I can't stand them. Sure, at the time it was wild and new, BUT NOT ANYMORE.

On a more positive note, I recommend Daft Punk. Especially their live albums. It's like crack for your ears.

Them Crooked Vultures, The Presidents of the United States (their debut album), and Queens of the Stone Age.
Or at least that's what I'm listening to right now.
Oh, and Rush!
