The reason Obsidian did as good of job as they did with New vegas is because the people who made the original Fallout games work at Obsidian. Elder Scrolls is entireley Bethesda's and I wouldn't trust anyone else to work on it.

I just...don't know what to say to anyone who thinks Fallout 3 was better than New Vegas. I came in here to address the topic at hand, but then was dumbfounded at the amount of people who believe that NV was inferior or "ruined". Just...wow. I...wow.

Anyway, while on the one hand Obsidian's style is not really fitting for an Elder Scrolls game, I do think that Bethesda needs to learn from them that you CAN have engrossing stories and strong, interesting characters in a massive, non-linear game. New Vegas is an absolutely stellar example of this---it's actually way more open to personal choice than FO3 or any Elder Scrolls game, and yet it has fantastic writing, stories, and characters. This is what Elder Scrolls (and Bethesda titles in general) are missing, and this is precisely what Obsidian is the best in the business at.

So maybe they should have Obsidian's writing team handle stories and dialogue, and design all the mechanics and environments themselves. I dunno. I just know I love Bethesda's games and I love Obsidian's writing.

I for one, love the hell out of New Vegas. I've put way more hours into that than Fallout 3 (which, granted, is nowhere near as much as a lot of people). I feel like NV just..."clicked" better for me. I actually cared about the characters and story, rather than just seeing the main quests as a longer-running version of the sidequests. And while I understand the idea of giving a TES game completely over to Obsidian might not be the best ("Bethesda's baby" and all), I really would like to see a collab game with Bethesda's programming polish and Obsidian's story writing that would give quests I liked as much as NV's.
I really don't get when people object to the idea of putting better stories into TES games by saying "That's not what the fans play for". I don't really see how fans could get offended if the game had a better story, as long as they didn't detract from the roamy-stealy-killy freedom to implement it.

Ehhh, no thanks. I hated KOTR. Should have been a great game...

And besides, I loathed New Vegas. F3 was amazing but NV, another story.

given my general opinion of Bethesda is 'masters of the over rated bore-fest', giving the elder scrolls to Obsidian would likely be the only way to get me to re-guard a new elder scrolls game with anything other then indifference or contempt

Honestly, I wouldn't like Obsidian working on a new Elder Scrolls game, simply because it's Bethesda's series, while Fallout is the baby of many of Obsidians designers.

That being said however, I am tired of people calling Obsidian a horrible developer, yes they need a much, MUCH, stronger QA team, yet they have the capability to create amazing games, they have solid story, multi-dimensional characters and factions, with flaws and strengths. Their stories have depth symbolism and humor that is better than some books I've read. I believe that they are best suited to develop the Fallout series better than Bethesda is, FONV's story and companions were better, with a similar gameplay style to FO3.

I'm not forgetting Obsidian's bad points (buggy gameplay in FONV, horrible ending in NWN2OC, etc.) but their good points definately outweigh the bad, FONV's storyline and DLC was amazing. In NWN2 the overarcing story, the trial, the keep minigame, the companions, it's first expansion are all spectacularly done. Alpha Protocol's dialogue system is impressive.

Obsidian is hit and miss for a lot of people, I realize that, some people like playing for gameplay and fun and don't pay a lot of attention to story, while for some it is the exact opposite. It's just like how some people enjoy Twilight while others prefer A Song of Ice and Fire.

All in all, I am hopeful for the Wheel of Time game that they're creating and I really hope it turns out well, but they should stay out of TES except as maybe advisors to the creation of the storyline of the game.

Edit: Anytime I see preference to Fallout 3 to Fallout: New Vegas, I don't see a lot of reasons of why they enjoyed that. If someone would post why it would be appreciated. Please don't say story, the story of Fallout 3 has a plot-breaking flaw that could be seen by anyone with grade 11 chemistry or physics.

Not the mechanics. Beth fail at that too. Just the environments. If they don't do they're famous copy/paste job, that is.
Traditionally, yeah, Bethesda has had some pretty awful combat mechanics. But they've been getting better at that---Skyrim's mechanics are great.

Maybe if Obsidian stopped hiring programmers from the Art Institute... What? who said that? Wasn't me!

I think they would do an okay job but honestly you can wait for sequels in their own good time.

I'm curious as to why everyone seems to think Obsidian would write a better story than Bethesda. I'm familiar with two Obsidian games and I've seen snippets of New Vegas, in which the writing was palatable but certainly not stuff I'd be handing out awards for. Meanwhile, Dungeon Siege III had absolutely terrible writing; it did woeful job of attempting to convey why anyone should care from the get-go and most of the dialogue fell flatter than a pancake on a runway.

Then there was Neverwinter Nights II. This game had one of the worst storylines I've ever had the misfortune to sit through. The utterly stereotypical "you are a peasant on a farm" fantasy beginning, the confusing mess of villains and their poorly explained motivations (douchebagerry being the apparent motive of choice), the incongruous attempts to take the piss out of stereotypical characters while trying to maintain a serious 'world under threat' storyline, the arbitrary companion dialogue that tied in with the loyalty mechanic whereby at least one person had to dissent with your decision no matter how beneficial it was to everyone, the poorly written 3rd act that read like a game of Sim City played through a Zork interface, the patronising trial sequence that is ultimately completely pointless thanks to both legal counsellors having unmentioned knowledge of a 'fuck this' motion, strained and ham-fisted moments of 'romance' and 'sacrifice' and the god-awful ending.

Now, I'm not calling Bethesda's games examples of epic storytelling. But there's really no reason to get Obsidian involved, ever.

Bethesda's staff is better at crafting the games in their engine. If anything, what you should want is Obsidian to write the script for the next game, as that's what Obsidian excels at. When it comes to programming and working with engines they fall on their face again and again.

I'm not a big fan of Obsidian, but I have to say I liked Fallout: New Vegas a hell of a lot more than Fallout 3. I wouldn't like Obsidian to do any Elder Scrolls games, however, I do think it would be nice to see Obsidian take over the Fallout series while Bethesda focus on The Elder Scrolls games.

I guess you never played Planescape:Torment, Fallout 1/2, Mask of the Betrayer, Vampire:Bloodlines or Arcanum , cause the writing (story/characters/dialog) puts anything Bethesda has done to shame.
I love me some Obsidian, but Troika (who did Bloodlines and Arcanum) was the other half of Black Isle, headed by Tim Cain.
