I'd like to add my name to list of people who think Thomas Edison shouldn't remotely be #1. And Amelia Earhart? I mean, sure, she's a great woman, but one of the greatest innovator's of all time? Not really.

That sounds about right.

Without Steve Jobs we wouldn't have laptops, portable music players, smartphones and all other entertainment- related stuff.
But anyways, isn't Tesla some sort of plasma measurement unit, not a person? Educate yourself and learn some facts, people.
Or maybe y'all be trolling! =0
hahaha!... oh wait, you're serious? let me laugh even harder HAHAHAHAHA!!!

The only thing jobs made for those devices is making them more stylish and expensive.

(I'm not arguing he was a visionary, a great bussines man and props for funding pixar but he's far for 2nd greatest innovator ever and inventing those devices.)

Why would you laugh? Steve Jobs was a great man. By himself, alone, he created the necessary technology to play mp3 files on the go, and to boot he created such an elegant design.
He created laptops by taking the existing tech used in PC's and using his knowledge to make it work in much smaller form.

He was a great inventor, and a visionary.

Just because there is a new generation of hopeful young people that appreciate a man who made their life so much easier and better does not mean they should be slapped.

This is what happens with public education and media have a baby. It's just terrible. He should win an award for being the most hate filled CEO. He hated Google and Microsoft so damn much. And because of that, he was an epic whiner. And Edison, that guy was an even bigger thief than Jobs was. This is what public education has wrought. Also, why am I not surprised this came from a professor at MIT? It's like I just expect ivy league schools and think tanks to say the dumbest things.

Yeah, I'm also going to credit Steve Wozniak before Steve. Steve as an innovator? Not really. Steve as marketable genius who created the image of how Apple is today ?(And the the Internet can cry a river for all I care) Yeah, he deserves that title better.

Deny it all you want, but ask yourself how Apple was on the map if Steve wasn't around in the first place.

Haha, an expert troll is what you are good sir/madam. I don't know if you're serious or not, but just in case:

Nikola Tesla [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla] - The Tesla Unit was named after Nikola Tesla

First Laptop [http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2005-01-16/open-space/27853745_1_first-laptop-ultralite-compaq-computer]

First Smartphone [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone]

And the first MP3 player was released in 1996, it had a meager 32 megs of storage, but it was 5 full years before the iPod came out.

My favorite bit that everyone seems to forget is how Apple wouldn't exist if Microsoft didn't bail them out in 1997... So apple exists today because of Bill Gates... haha, that is too funny. I guess you could also credit Bill Gates for Steve Jobs being the household name he is today.

* sound of pain when I got hit on the fingers with a hammer.

Points goes to Bill for the 90s. Point goes to Steve since no one remembers the Zune.

But seriously, thank you Bill.

Sorry but according to wikipedia there were six portable MP3 players before the iPod

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_media_player

Though i have to admit that the ipod was closer to the birth of MP3 players than i thought

The first commercial portable computer was released by IBM in 1975

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_5100

The first flip flop form factor portable computer was released in early the 80's

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulmont_Magnum

The first Apple laptop was released in 1989

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Portable

I didn't have all this data beforehand but i thought it was common sense that Apple is a refiner more than an inventor.

Back to the OP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Cooper_(inventor) invented the cellphone, I'm just sayin

The problem is that Edison was both inventor and businessman, whereas most successes are the result of a split R&D / business management effort in which the company, not the people, get the credit. Add to that the fact that Edison hired other engineers whos work added to his fame as the Wizard of Menlo Park, and it's no contest.

So while we've had a lot of inventors and businessmen that deserve credit for innovation, it was Edison's business model that puts him on top.

Personally, I'd consider Tesla a brighter star than Edison. The guy was purely gifted, but not a businessman and had no one to trust in that respect. So while his inventions did much more practical good (AC power, etc.), his ability to invent and commercialize was handicapped.

Tesla > Edison
Edison stole many of his ideas, and Tesla had worked out a way to transfer energy wirelessly, but, since one of them was a rich businessman, he was ingrained into the public's memory forever, whilst the other one died with little money to his name.

It's Florence Nightingale vs. Mary Seacole again; an example of how capitalism can undermine true talent.

Yep, this poll is who managed to steal the most inventions.

Thomas Edison stole everything from Tesla.
Steve Jobs never invented anything he just marketed it well.

Graphical User Interface? Ironically he copied it from Xerox.
Smart Phone? Blackberry.
MP3 Player? There's a loooong list of mp3 players before him, he probably copied the most from Creative
I Pad? Microsoft.Tablet PC

My Personal Tops.

Tesla - Too many to count, most obvious is AC power
Archimedes - he's a god damn legend.
Dennis Ritchie - Invented C and Unix

but he isn't an innovator. Its like being asked "who is the best sportsman" and then replying "george washington"
