I dont see why theres such hatred against steve jobs being in this poll. I'm a chunk of a way through his biography and you wouldn't believe what kind of difference he made in the world.

It was him and steve wozniak that created the first game of breakout, within restricted deadlines.
He already dreams and models of laptops built before the macintosh was even released.
He turned pixar into what it is now.
He gave the smartphone market the biggest kick up the backside it has ever received.
As above with the portable media.
Apple essentially created the cheap, ball mouse.

The list does go on. Yes, he was tyranic, controlling, demanding, cruel and everything else to everyone around him, but thats what made people get things done.

A specific piece I remember in the book is to do with the mouse. He asked his top engineer to create one with a ball that will cost $15. The engineer said it was impossible. He was sacked and replaced the next day with one who said he could do it.

Reading the book as well. Everyone who has worked for him have always enjoyed it and wouldn't have changed it. He might not have been an inventor, but he certainly had his hand in altering the industries he worked in perminantly.

Just good god. Honestly I don't think I've been this pissed at a poll in a very VERY long time. So no Tesla, no Da Vinci, hell I'd even take Gates and Wozniak as alternatives. And honestly, everyone already stole what I was gonna say so screw it. I'm just gonna be over here sulking now.

EDIT: Truth be told when posting this I believed it was a pure tech field (for some odd reason) upon looking at the comments I have realized how HORRENDOUSLY ignorant I was. I would like to add...basically every scientist to make a major discovery on this list. However, since that would likely take decades, I'll leave it at my additions out. Also, most people have stated them and no one is going to read this so screw it.

THESE ARE MIT [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology] STUDENTS! COLLEGE students! From a university of TECHNOLOGY!

I'd be shocked and horrified if these answers came from HIGH SCHOOL KIDS! Let alone people, at least, graduating in SCIENTIFIC FIELDS!

I'd be sad if High School kids didn't know Nikola Tesla, but whatever... But if you've never heard of names such as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Coopernicus, Galileo, Da Vinci, Plato, Archemidis, Gutenberg, and many more... by high school... YOUR EDUCATION IS A COMPLETE AND UTTER FAILURE.

This is baffling. This is akin so someone asking "Who are the greatest musicians of ALL TIME?" and someone saying Madonna and Justin Bieber...

Nope. Only Apple fanboy worship puts him in second place. Considering Mark Zuckerberg is in fifth place, I can't take this poll seriously. These guys ranked above Nikola Tesla? That, and Thomas Edison's "innovation" is also disputable. I have no doubt that he made some serious inventions, but there are serious controversies about some of his patents.

and Temple Grandin, well shit, I'll give that a WTF too.
I can explain that one. She studied animal psychology and noticed certain things about cows when they were being lead to the slaughterhouse, and how time consuming it was to make them move. So what she did is she designed and built a model for a slaughterhouse that was tuned to the animal's behavior, and they would literally walk themselves to the chopping block. And when it was built full scale on an actually slaughterhouse...IT WORKED.

Why is Steve Jobs in this list at all?

Why is Mark Suckerburg on this list?

These men have done nothing!

Edison should be beneath him for being a **** and thinking that DC electricity was worth anyone's time or effort.

The real outcome of the questionnaire was that they found who have been the biggest dicks when it comes to patent law.

She also did a lot of work on Autism and getting it noticed without being ridiculed, but still she was way behind innovators in that field like Skinner or Zimbardo.

The way this entire poll has been set up, this sounds like students telling an obvious hipster teacher what she wanted to hear - so as to gain extra marks.

OK, that's just depressing. The winner is a thief who stole everything from Tesla and invented the goddamned electric chair as a marketing device. If this is for the greatest innovator of all time, why not Alan Turing or Tim Berners-Lee? I'd say what they did ranks far, far higher than making an overpriced mp3 player.
This.

Alan Turing revolutionized the way science views the universe, namely, that order can come from chaos (and vice-versa). If it weren't for him, we would still be scratching our collective heads over weather patterns.

And Tim Berners-Lee, do I need to say more?

Edison was a fucking hack and an awful human being. He went up against Tesla and got his ass handed to him AC style. People throw around the phrase "ahead of its time" a lot, but it rarely ever applies. With Tesla it does. Tesla's ideas are still coming to fruition. He was ahead of his time in the truest sense. His genius seems more befitting of a sci-fi divergent American history novel than real life because it seems ridiculous for a man of his time to come up with the ideas he came up with. One of the most underrated men ever.

Ok well I'll admit that MIT students should probably know better. I didn't realise it was only a specific group of university students who undertook the poll.

I suppose the difference between music and innovators is that music is something that many people are interested in whereas innovators are not. I don't care what the name of the person who invented/discovered/designed a way to harness electricity is, as long as I can use the objects that I wish to. People actively listen to music and change their views on music as they hear it. So knowing the names of a band would be important to me so I can find more of their music etc. There are reasons to have an informed opinion on music whereas having an informed opinion on this top just doesn't appeal to a mainstream society. At least from what I understand.

That's what it is though. Equally, the Bible is just a book. Equally, Yahtzee is just a guy with a sweet hat.
Just because an object can be described in a dull fashion doesn't make it dull. Sure to you the bible is just a book but to some people they would die for the ideals presented within it. As for an iPod sure it is what the above person described it as but that doesn't change the fact that he is obviously applying some exagerated negative connotations in order to serve his point. Me pointing out this isn't worth arguing over I don't think.

It shouldn't be. Your first kiss, the death of a loved one, moving out should be a huge thing. Not a freaking toy.
Well not trying to offend but you are kind of taking this completely out of context. We were talking about innovators, I have never heard of the amazing innovators that designed my first kiss or the time I moved out. So to include them in points against me seems kind of unfair. I understand what you are saying but the fact is that I use my iPhone every day for a myriad of things to say that it shouldn't be a big part of my life doesn't mean anything to me. It is, simply because it is a tool I use that is extremely helpful. That doesn't mean I value it as much as actual people, or that if I didn't have access to it I would somehow break down. What you seem to be doing is making me out as some heartless person who cares for objects moreso than the people around him which is just not true at all.

People should be willing to learn after basic education levels. That's why they're called basic.
Well that is not exactly what I am saying. Obviously people will expand on their knowledge from their basic education however that expansion whether it be practical application or further academic study will generally be more specific then their original broad basic education. I am not saying people shouldn't know anything other then what basic education teaches I am saying that people shouldn't be expected to know things that aren't apart of it. If I learn accounting next year I could be the best accountant in the world and I still would have no idea who the true innovators in our world are, simply because that area does not interest me so studying it would be kind of pointless.

It's not the "Innovators that you've heard of", it's "Greatest Innovators of all Time". That means you should at least put some effort into researching Innovators before your time, rather than cradling your overpriced MP3 player.

Seriously, you have no idea how angry that comment made me.
Well that sounds kind of silly to me. It seems rather obvious that you can only vote for innovators that you have actually heard of. Expecting people to do otherwise is nonsensical. As for the research part, are you seriously telling me that if tomorrow a poll at your university asked you a question you would go and research the topic at hand so that you have a completely full view of the topic before answering? If so you must waste a lot of your time on fairly pointless endeaveurs.
