My God, he's basically (southpark) Al Gore running after his own Man-Bear-Pig, isn't he? He's super serial!

Muppet.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not a native English speaker) but "substance abuse" is about taking drugs, right? What do they have to see with a topic like this?
No you are right. Substance abuse is about using drugs.

However, some people are saying that playing video games is liking snorting cocaine...so...

Aside from the letter looking like it was written by a twelve year old kid with social problems, I do have to agree with Jack on this one. I really think Valve should just shut the mod off and move on because it's not doing any good to anybody. threatening and expecting such a fast response though are not the kind of things somebody should expect from a company as there are certainly a few obstacles that need to be cleared out before such an operation can be performed.
Like I've said a few pages back, Valve can't realistically do that. If they update the game to be incompatible with the mod, the modders will update to be compatible with the game. They can't stop people from *getting* the mod because that's pretty much impossible on the internet. So the only two options aren't doable. The only thing they could try is directly punishing people that use the mod, which would require blatantly invading user privacy. I know most DRM programs aren't afraid of that anyway but it's not morally correct to do it imho.

Is the mod disgusting and wrong? Yes. As much as it pains me to admit it, I agree with Jack there. Is it likely to directly cause the next major shooting? Unlikely. It's as likely to prevent it as it is start it because I'll bet it's a great way to vent if you're the kind of person being forced into that mindset. I don't remember if Jack said he sent it to the actual makers of the mod, but they're who this moron should go to yell at.

What is this guy now, a pundit?

"you have until five o'clock pm Eastern standard time this Friday, March 18, 2011, to shut down this public safety hazard."

I couldn't find the "or else" clause. Litigation? A fist fight? And why hasn't he searched out and written a letter to the creator of the mod?

"I predicted years ago this school massacre game would arrive."

Really? Was that before or after Colombine or the numerous other school shootings that took place in the 90's?

"I hate being right all the time."

But such is the life of a prophet.

I've never heard of this saint, so I looked him up. Turns out he had his lawyer-license revoked for epitomizing all of our worst stereotypes about lawyer-dom.

Translation of the letter: "I don't have any idea of games or half life 2 or school shooting massacres but i want some press and if you don't press the magic valve stop button i will blame you and your company for any future massacre of the school type or any time if you don't do what i say. Also i hate to be always right."
I don't like that mod but i find this letter totally retarded.
Off topic i will right a letter to EA, it's going to be something like this: "Dear Bobby Kotick: It came to my knowledge that your game Call of duty promotes war. If you don't stop this in the next 20 seconds i will have to write you another letter. This letter have been sent to the United Nations, the Vatican and some others including your mom. I'm always right so stop".

IF I worked there and read this, I'd be getting ready to do one of those 'intervention' visits, as whoever wrote that letter was sooo high, they're in dire need of professional medical and psychiatric help.

For the record, games are fun, and like it or not, while you're on the high, most drugs are fun too, (with a massive massive collection of serious downsides, so don't do it kids!), I'm guessing that's how they're exactly alike. A bit like my keyboard and the Empire state building are both grey, therefore I should be charging people to come see my keyboard.

When I first saw this article I couldn't help but agree somewhat with Jack here. As much as it was a bit of a surprise, I do agree that this mod should be taken care of if possible. It really isn't that tasteful, actually isn't anything beyond a literal murder simulator, and it doesn't help the image of video games at all (even though there was one person who made it, as opposed to the whole industry).

The thing is Jack couldn't help but come off as a bit of an ass. Half-Life isn't a murder simulator and I doubt that either of the two people he mentioned played it (or at least "trained" with it). And I don't know what Valve can do about this. Sure they can encourage people not to play it and don't give it any support; but if people want to play it, they'll find ways of obtaining and playing it. Plus his threats are a bit silly to me. I doubt he can really do anything if he isn't pleased by Valve's response.

So overall, I agree with Jack Thompson's goals here, but I still don't like the man himself.

What's Newell sopposed to do? Go to the guys making the mod and say "Cut it out," or maybe give them the opportunity to beta test episode 3?

I thought when Thompson was disbarred it would give him a hint. I guess I was wrong.

Question: Why is it not flaming to post horrifically offensive words at people who are famous, yet to do so to another forum member is.

It is, but the odds of a famous person seeing any given post about themselves is slim. I very much doubt, for example, that Jack is on the Escapist forums reading this thread. (Although I kind of hope he is. Kind of.) So it's still flaming and generally rude, but much more harmless in theory. So most people aren't going to care.
