I understand that he want the mod gone, but come on jack, be more polite, it is not Gabe that created the mod!

So two people who played the game went on a killing spree? Out of what, the thousands, millions of people who played it? Did they eat, sleep, and shit too? Guess we need to outlaw that. Were they made by procreation? Well...... no more of that.
There is no proof they even played the games, especially the Virginia Tech shooter who only had a copy of sonic in his room.

Obvious troll is obvious and you guys continue to fall for it... just ignore this guy, he's trying to get a rise out of you guys so he can take all of his death threats and hatred that gets sent to him and use it as evidence. I can't believe that still has to be said...

I hate to say it, but I agree with Jack this time around. That mod is so bad for the gaming community that it could potentially set us back years if the Supreme Court gets wind of it. The developers aren't even defending it in an artistic manner, their sole goal is make a game where you murder civilians in a hauntingly familiar fashion FUN. Even Uwe Boll made his killing spree film in an artistic manner that put us in the head of the shooter. Uwe fucking Boll.
Please, 98% of everything is shit. I bet there are horrible gore-fest movies out there that don't have any artistic ambitions either. At the end of this day this mod will get most of its attention for its shock value, not because of its actual gameplay or anything, and after the situation has calmed down, everyone will forget about it and pretend they save America from an Acceptable Target somewhere on this or another globe.

Well... the premise for that game is absolutely abhorrent and it never should have been made. That said, Valve did not make it, so Jack is kind of out of luck there.
Secondly, I love how he writes his letters. They don't even have the pseudo-nicety of lawyer-speak "cease and desist" letters. It just sounds like they're written by some butt-hurt kid and I can't help but picture him sneering the whole time he's writing.
Thirdly, why does his voice have ANY weight anymore? He's been disbarred. He's been caught in blatant lies. He is essentially utterly discredited. Why, then, do his words mean ANYTHING? Why don't email clients auto-filter his messages as spam and editors, CEO's etc automatically throw his letters in the trash without reading them?
Finally, I wish that Mr Newell was not a professional who will probably treat him with respect. I would LOVE to see one of his targets point out the blatant misinformation (eg that his sources rarely actually have anything to do with what he's saying) and tell him in not so nice terms what he can do with that letter. He is not a legal representative. He has no clout or anything anymore >.<

...which kind of explains why he went on a killing spree.

(Yes, I went there.)

The only thing I think that Gabe Newell and Value has to do is support the modding community. This is something that a single man should be able to make. It might be in poor taste but if your going to have freedom of speech you have to take the good and the bad.

There have been many many studies on the impact of videogames on whether people are violent ingeneral. And research into the school shooters as well. Both have shown that there is no direct link between the two and that if someone is violent they are violent despite videogames not because of them. Placing blame from its source into videogames like this does nothing but put our society back and make it so that we don't develop.

The school shootings show something deep in our school systems. A problem that lets something like this develop in a child until he feels he has no option but to be violent, as that is the only thing that will get what he needs done.

While the author should be able to right the most beautiful poetry in the world but the KKK should be allowed to preach its hate.

This is a different situation. They not only stated that they would be surprised if the California game bill didn't pass, they said they WANTED it to pass. That's not a joke or an exaggeration. Then they come out with this piece of garbage that does nothing but give people ammunition against us.

Just have to say, I agree with your stance on this. I'm always one for freedom in art forms, especially with games.

But honestly, I side with Jack on this one (not necessarily the way he goes about it) as this mod sounds like nothing more than a sick abomination that I can't imagine anybody WANTING to play, there is clearly a limit, you know? They have made no effort to explore themes or make something other than just for the sake of shock value and controversy.

Also, good example with the Boll thing, I've actually enjoyed some of his stuff and it usually has awesome mocking value even if it does crap all over the term "cinema".

I'll be among the first to say that this mod is nothing short of awful, but the creator is within his rights to make it. I honestly believe if you don't support the right of free speech(if that's what you call it in this case) for those you hate, you don't support free speech at all. That being said, what is Gabe supposed to do? It's like saying "Hey book publisher A, see Publisher B? They're publishing something we don't like, since you publish books, you can stop it. Do so.

Remember that scene in The Simpsons Halloween Episode "Attack of the 50ft Eyesores" where everyone in the town turns away from the attention-seeking monster, causing it's silent demise?

Yeah... I wish we could all do that now and say goodbye to Mr Thompson for good. Maybe we need a jingle...
