And just to be a grammar nazi, their is no such word as "seriousness". The correct word would be seriosity.
Pro-tip: when attempting to be a grammar nazi, it helps to be correct.

Response #1 (it's real): the idea that no one should ever experience violence, anywhere, no matter what, is just idiotic. Sometimes people do really stupid shit, and sometimes the best way for them (and others) to learn their lesson is physical retaliation. No one was killed or maimed. That wasn't even close to a legitimate "beating". But we've got the original instigator trying to track these guys down and press charges? Go fuck yourself, buddy. Yes, those were some grade-A thugs. They also totally looked like grade-A thugs before you tried to involve them in your shtick, didn't they? Use some common sense, asshole. Wearing some "improv actor!" badge doesn't turn the world into your own personal playground. If you think it does, I wish you several more kicks in the ass.
Agreed. Frankly, I don't really feel sorry for him. If they'd simply attacked him with no warning, I'd be outraged, but when the actor was given multiple warnings and refused to stop harassing the guys, I cease I really give a damn whether violence is justified or not.

It does look somewhat fake (the aggressor is too easily held back) but if it is, what a terrible joke. It's not funny to watch someone get beaten up. And if it's not a joke then why did they expect people to laugh when Darth Maul shows up. Jar Jar thinks Darth Maul is chasing him then Darth Maul shows up. That's the joke? Not funny either. And if you're trying to identify someone for a crime you'd use a freeze frame of his face in the video (or leave it for the police to handle). Not funny all round, so I do hope it it is just a (nother) bad joke.

So -
If the skit had gone 'as planned'. It's terrible.
If he really got beaten up. It's terrible.
If it's a just an April's fools. It's terrible.

Jar Jar Binks Gets Beaten Up On The New York Subway

Subway riders assaulted an actor playing the most hated character in Star Wars and are now being sought so charges can be pressed.

We've all probably wished that we could do terrible things to Jar Jar Binks at one point or another, but some subway riders in New York recently got to live out the fantasy when they beat the stuffing of an actor portraying the character. The actor was part of a group called Improv Everywhere, "a New York City-based prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places."

Basically, the actor dressed as Jar Jar got onto a subway train and started flouncing around, talking to random passengers, until he got a little too close for comfort with a couple of rather large individuals. One of the guys repeatedly told the actor to get out of his face and then took a swing at Jar Jar when the request was repeatedly ignored.

Here's the official synopsis, as explained on the YouTube video's page:

For our latest mission, we attempted to stage a sequel to our Star Wars Subway Car mission, using characters from Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Jar Jar Binks entered a random train car and informed subway riders that he was scared that Darth Maul was chasing him. If things had gone as planned, people would have laughed and been surprised when Darth Maul showed up at the next stop.

Unfortunately, three men on the train decided to ruin the fun for everyone by assaulting our actor playing Jar Jar. We were not going to even post this mission, but the actor who played Jar Jar wants to press charges, and we are searching for information on the three guys who attacked him. We hope that someone who sees this video will know them personally or recognize their faces.

The end of the video features Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere's founder, talking to the camera in his office and pleading for people to forward the video on and anyone who can identify the men who assaulted Jar Jar to come forward. The seriousness of the video is somewhat undercut when Todd asks people to subscribe to Improv Everywhere's YouTube channel.

OK, on one hand, it sucks that these guys got assaulted while they were attempting to film a viral improv video. On the other, though, maybe they'll take this as a lesson: when you're getting in the face of a guy who looks like Bruce Willis's angry twin and he repeatedly tells you to get away, maybe you should take his suggestion to heart.

EDIT: Some readers have claimed this is an April Fools' joke. Honestly, it's hard to tell, mainly because the video was uploaded to YouTube on March 31st instead of April 1st. On top of that, the troupe posted another, similar, video where things weren't interrupted by an assault. It's certainly possible that this is a prank, but it's not obvious if it is.

Wow the Escapist's first news report with real footage included! Good thing they had a cameraman there handy to not help the guy and record it!

Sorry, but that was just bad. My cat has played better april fools jokes on me today.
they never claimed this was their footage... this video is from improv everywhere, it was THEIR camera because it was their prank. I am 100% sure that the whole jarjar getting beat up is an april fools prank.

If it wasn't an April fools joke the JarJar would've been stabbed, then again I haven't been back to NY for years, I hear its nicer now.
I thought this was going to be an article about fans finding the original actor who played JarJar and kicking his ass, and I had to think, its not the actors fault, its Lucas' ass they should be kicking.
Seriously, 'JarJar said things..He knew he shouldn't have said..an he get what he get.'

I'm not sure what to make of this. If it really did happen you don't start punching someone over getting in your face.
Just put of curiosity: what would you do?

If it is real, I'd hope to God that they press charges. You can't beat the fuck out of somebody just becasue they are annoying!

Edit: Darth Maul coming in right in the middle of all the chaos was wonderful.

You should recognise the relevant part of dialogue in here to this conversation.

While a flogging for being annoying isn't called for, you have to expect a response from someone when you consistently invade their space and ignore repeated warnings to back up.

The man should be charged for his violence, and the actor should also take away a valuable lesson from this experience.

This is definitely a joke. Improv actors know better than to get in a big guy's face (especially that guy, he looked like the kind of guy who carries a .22, even in a anti-gun city). Besides, we don't actually see him getting trounced just the quick glimpses. And then darth maul got on... Yeah.

Props to the actors. Improv rocks!
And it gets you laid, no joke.

I'm sorry, even if this is an April Fools...If I saw someone dressed as Jar Jar I'd beat the shit out of him. Wouldn't care who it was. It'd just feel like I'd done something wrong if I didn't punch that smug annoying fucker. Especially when he get's in peoples face about it. I'm sorry, I don't know the actor but he pulled the sci-fi equivelent of going out with a Hitler mustash.

Until it becomes illegal to be a dick, his actions were not justified.

Gently push them away with my arm then walk away. If they keep going just ignore them.

Not condoning violence, but the guy did warn him twice to "get out of his face." He had it coming. "People can't take a joke" is no excuses. Don't fuck with people, because they might end up fucking you up.

You provoke a guy who tells you 3 times to get out of his face, you deserve your fate.

I bet its fake anyway for April Fools.

Guys, read the fucking article. This wasn't an April Fool's, the guys on the subway legitimately jumped the actor. Know what you're talking about before you talk about it -.-

Guys, it's fake. Think about this:

1) The camera man doesn't drop the camera to help
2) You don't really see any of the actual violence, it's all just barely off camera. This hides the fact that there isn't much going on there.
3) Post on the internet to find these guys? Riiiight. That makes much more sense than giving it to the police. Especially considering how bad it is otherwise.
4) The original idea is extremely stupid. The 'mission' isn't well described, and it a clear and less clever knockoff of one of their earlier things.
5) THEY USE THE IMPROV_ANYWHERE banner at the start. If this was meant to be a plea for help, they wouldn't bother pretending it's a normal video.
6) While the video hit youtube on the 31st, the blog post on improveverywhere.com was for the first of April : http://improveverywhere.com/2011/04/01/jar-jar-subway-car/
7) Along with the above, no mention of it explicitly not being an A1 joke is made.

All in all, it is extremely hard to call this legit.
