I think Kojima has finally decided to throw away all pretense of being sick with the Metal Gear Series and let it in the hands of developers who genuinely want to try something different.

Of course, I will buy it.

Yes, it looks fucking awesome. Yes, the gameplay itself looks a little like ass. Yes, it is not Metal Gear Solid.

...But it still looks kinda cool.

Can't wait for MGS5. If they punch out another clone of Big Boss I will eat my PS3. Bring in some new sneaky blood!

Thanks for a lengthy reply, it was certainly an interesting read. First of all, I should clarify I'm fully aware of a role that producers have in a project. In saying that Kojima had "little to do" with this game I just meant that he isn't writer and director. Should have been more clear on that.

A lot of people tend to give creators too much of an easy out when they "merely" take up producing something, or sell a liscence knowing what it's going to be used for.
I agree with this wholeheartedly , but I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Metal Gear series is his livelihood and I doubt he'd want to jeopardize something that makes that much money. IMO this was actually a good move. Giving other studio a chance to provide a fresh new take on the universe and (some) characters while still having an opportunity to wash his hands if the whole deal turns out to go tits up by saying this was just a spin-off. Besides he wouldn't want to risk potential sales of Metal Gear 5.

Also, I've never had a chance to play original MGS on MSX2, or Peace Walker (waiting for HD collection to hit Europe) so I couldn't consult with a game booklet, but given the general tone of the game (I did see some gameplay vids) and similarities between Kyle Reese and Snake on original cover it's not hard to believe it was mocking 80s action heroes. Sons of Liberty did some criticizing of its own. Video games, like other media are a fun way of conveying a message to the audiences, any by God do the Japanese developers keep reminding us of this. Any anti-west undertones these games might have, should be taken as merely an reflection of Kojima's personal opinions, if at all. Anyway, it's not like US did a lot to endear themselves to rest of the world, and given the cultural differences it's easy to just concentrate on stereotypes.

In short, I think we're over-analyzing this :D
It's a 3-min trailer, showing barely anything of the game, so it's too early to draw any conclusions on the final product. They did promise classic MGS stealth or murder choice, although killing everyone will be hard to resist when you can slice them up in bazillion different ways. It was however an interesting discussion.

Cheers

Yes, I do believe that Metal Gear has officially jumped the shark.
WAIT! NOW they jumped it?!
So we're gonna disregard Psycho Mantis, The Pain who can teleport with bees, Multiple Ghosts coming back from the dead, Breaking the fourth wall on any occasion, Revolver Ocelot ricocheting bullets, Grey Fox, a Monkey who Smokes, and Raiden doing crazier crap than this in MGS4 (holding back Arsenal Gear with one hand)

And THIS is where you say Metal Gear gets too weird?!

This series was convoluted and wacky from the beginning.

I love Bayonetta, it was my Game of the Year last year.

I love Metal Gear Solid, it's my favorite game franchise out there.

I'm...not sure what to think about it. I'm 100% sure I'll love it, but it looks a little bit TOO much like Bayonetta in regards to its battle system...

We'll see....

The actual gameplay had squat to do with MGS4, It was all about the incredibly complicated story. You can still have that with a hack and slash game, and maybe if the game lets you do amazing action stuff there will be less cutscenes showing the amazing action stuff.

I just. I. Oh. God. Why?

Why have you forsaken us?
*gunshot

No but seriously, Deus Ex was just okay. We have too many God of War clones. That's what this game looks like, Deus Ex and GoW. That's so fucking retarded.

I can say it looks pretty damn awesome. I mean, they are trying something new with the Metal Gear franchise while also using the badass new redesign of Raiden. I think this may be a one to look out for next year, especially if Platinum Games are helping out.
Plus, this is no longer MGS, it is MGR. Deal with it.

You make many valid points. But somehow I never really considered just how ridiculous the storylines were when I was playing the games. I was so absorbed by the world and characters that none of it really mattered. Look at the beauty that is MGS3, it remains one of my top favourite video game storylines based on how emotive it is... and like you say, it has a man who teleports using bees, a dead guy who still counts as a boss, a 100 year old man who only lives to do battle with Snake and a muscle bound guy who can pretty much shoot lightening from his body... wtf?

But the whole approach to Rising (I refuse to call it Revengeance) seems to drop all pretence of serious undertones and just fills it with as much over the top action as it can manage. I guess that is the point of the game, the whole franchise is simply bonkers so why not embrace that? I'm in no doubt that it will be a good game, a fun game for sure. But somehow it just doesn't sit right with me, mixing it into the whole MGS world.

Also, "I think it's time for Jack to let her rip!" wtf? Raiden was supossed to be incredibly ashamed of his past. MGS2 was about him learning to accept that part of his life and come to terms with it, not allowing it to hold him back or shape who he is. Now he's totally over it and embracing his nick name as a source of cheesy one liners? What the hell guys? I hope we get some sort of explaination of how he got to this point.

Oh... I don't know if I like or not.
It's over the top, and cheesy, even for Metal Gear Solid.
I hope this trailer is misleading, and that the game still has a strong stealth focus. Metal Gear is one of the best stealth games of all time methinks, and it's a genre that tends to not be very good.

I have officially stopped giving a damn about this game.
I mean, I knew it would be more combat heavy than previous metal gears, but I didn't expect something like Devil May Cry. Though I guess that people who like hack-and-slash games will feel differently.
It didn't look Devil May Cryish at all, more Ninja Gaiden. Which is basically Devil May Cry as a Ninja.

It sounds like shit honestly. But I'll reserve my judgement until I see that trailer.
I resoundingly agree, might as well have dressed him up as Ryu since Raiden is now apparently Ryu Hyabusa. It just doesn't fit in at all with Metal Gear in any way, which is basically a stealth game made of pure win. Now its... This thing.

I can't even look at this game with a straight face anymore, Raiden didn't feel like a bad ass in two, didn't feel like a bad ass in four and now feels like hes being a inside joke of how bad he really is now. In four all of his lines felt slightly forced and he didn't feel like a character, in two he was just ridiculous and now he feels little bit too serious overall, spurring out lines from Samuri like he greets ninjas every day.

Worse bit, this is the game most people on the 360 will be greeted into the series, unless they bought the collectors edition for the 360, but lets be honest here, who did that? Its like buying the Team Ico HD Collection when you never heard of them before.

I would probably care less if it did a switch off between Raiden and a Stealth guy here, not SANKE but a new Sneaking dude, but it seems to be straight up Raiden.

Platinum? The same people who made Bayonetta and Vanquish, 2 of the most pure fun games I have ever played? I was already looking forward to this game but now my anticipation is through the roof.

Negatempest said:
Okay, original trailer had the name "Metal Gear: Rising" Subtitle: Lighting Bolt Action. The gameplay of said trailer had no lightning bolt action in it at all whatsoever.
Look up what "Raiden" means.
The name of the Japanese God of Thunder? I'm trying to figure out the context of that question with....nm I better not think about it too much. But my point for my reply is that Raiden moved just as quick and agile as snake has over the gaming years. So the "gameplay" of Raiden in MGS4 and the gameplay of Raiden in the 1st trailer did not compute.
Actually if you ever played the Online Expansion of Metal Gear Solid 4, known as Metal Gear Online, you could play as customized PMC soldiers and at random times you'd be chosen to be either, Solid Snake, Liquid Ocelot, Meryl, Johnny, Mei Ling, Raiden or Vamp.

The gameplay for MGO was smooth and I still play it, but the mechanics for Raiden and Vamp are drastically limited to the games mechanics.

Here's a prime example of MGO

<youtube=s6wNz7UFOF0>

My fault for not explaining better. What I meant to say is that "if" Raiden moved as Snake did in MGS4, from the trailer it showed that he did, agility, speed, and strength would be limited. The controls were good for a stealth game. But could you imagine such a control for Raiden from his MGS4 appearance? He was jumping everywhere, moving in nearly unbelievable speed and agility. He also had the strength to pull down 2 gecko's with very little effort.

I'm upset that "fans" seem to completely forget that his appearance scene in MGS4 never happened when watching the new Raiden trailer. If anything, Raiden may have been toned down a little in the trailer compared to what he did in MGS4 alone.

According to most of the people here, these never happened.
"ooooo! Raiden is so awesome that I don't want to play a video game based on his MGS4 appearance." Is what I am getting from these outbursts.

Oh don't think wrongly of my points kind sir. I was just merely pointing out that sure the story is taken seriously, but sometimes fans take it TOO SERIOUSLY.
I loved the whole sci-fy vibe I felt from this series and yet like you said the game immersed me so deeply, I just kind of took it.

The problem I see why they are getting rid of alot of pretense is that this is Platinum Games we're talking about. Vanquish was an excellent game, but the story was just cheesy because it tried to hard to be serious. However there were some great elements especially with a few quips that let you know they were breaking the fourth wall.

Elaine: "Watch Out Sam! It's a Trap"
Sam: "Thanks for the Update Admiral!"

Elaine: "Be careful Sam. This robot is capable of turning into pure energy"
Sam: "Huh. Sounds like a Bad Video Game"

However I HOPE this game can still immerse us into Raiden's story and help us appreciate it more.

What most people also forget is that while Raiden was Human in MGS2 he fought off 3, count 'em 3!! Metal Gear Rays. Machines that were designed to counter Metal Gear Rex and Raiden was able to take on 3!?

Seriously people like to forget that Raiden even existed and when they do all they remember is his depressed part of the story where he had to come to terms with his past.

No one called out Snake for being emo!
"I'm no hero... Never was. I'm just an old killer... Hired to do some wet work."

Both Snake and Raiden had hard lives, but Snake is the only one allowed to complain about it!?
