So, the game became Devil May Cry with cyborgs, and the internet hates it?
I am NOT HAPPY with the direction they are taking one of my favorite characters, but the gameplay looks fun as hell.

This looks marvelously ridiculous. I'm mildly disappointed in the tonal shift between the original trailer and this one (moody and serious to completely bat-shit crazy) but it does look like it's going to be HELLA fun.

Buuut come on. Tossing a Metal Gear Ray into the air like it's a trash can? That's the kind of stuff I'd expect from a surreal series like Bleach or Final Fantasy, not one obsessed with anti-war sentiments and conspiracy theories.
In MGS4 a one armed cyborg Raiden stops a giant ship from crashing into Snake by himself and a short time after that an armless cyborg Raiden fights off some solders with his sword in his mouth. This series isn't particularly as grounded in reality as some may think.
There are also supernatural powers, possession, nanomachines that do everything, a guy with force lightning...

I can't believe someone could say that Metal Gear Solid is supposed to be a serious game after playing...any of them.
They are serious games, they're just so serious that Hideo Kojima actually has created his own serious that lesser non-Hideo lifeforms can't comprehend :D

I don't know how they ever manage to have epic storylines, grounded human emotions, art-like finally face-downs, movie like action and frickin' diarrhea jokes in the same thing.

That whole insane Raiden thing is even better when you think of it in terms of him reacting to us. So we said Raiden wasn't badass enough for us then? Well we all thought we knew what badass was and then Hideo asked us, is it as badass as a cyborg ninja stabbing himself through the leg so he can hold back the titanic? No? Well how about as badass as cyborg ninja whose jump a stump on the floor without any limbs and still the army of elite soldiers piss themselves when he wiggles his head slightly. Is Raiden badass enough for you now!

I feel the best way to explain the MGS series to anyone is to show them that picture of Hideo Kojima riding a duck and point out that they were designed by this guy.

On the bright side we don't have to play DmC anymore to get our high action hack and slash needs....

If this were anything other than a Metal Gear game, I'd love it. As it stands I can't look at this without wondering where Kojima's active "stealth of the hunt" went, and "never rewarding players for killing". Some of those lines were pretty bad, too. Not to mention that the insane amount of blood is completely contrary to Metal Gear's running theme of there being no glory in killing.

Okay, original trailer had the name "Metal Gear: Rising" Subtitle: Lighting Bolt Action. The gameplay of said trailer had no lightning bolt action in it at all whatsoever.
Look up what "Raiden" means.
The name of the Japanese God of Thunder? I'm trying to figure out the context of that question with....nm I better not think about it too much. But my point for my reply is that Raiden moved just as quick and agile as snake has over the gaming years. So the "gameplay" of Raiden in MGS4 and the gameplay of Raiden in the 1st trailer did not compute.

I am pleased with this. Would rather have a new Bayonetta or something unrelated to MGS, but I won't look a robot-sword-fight-gift horse in the mouth.

A Majority of the Escapists not liking the New Raiden in contrast to the old Sneaking Raiden
A Majority of the Escapists liking the new Dante in contrast to the Old Dante.

I see a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Double standard here.
Whoa, what? People like the new Dante? Count me out of that example, please.

Double-standard as in.....two characters being judged? Not what that means, lol.
I said it was a double standard because of everyone's reaction to this Raiden is inversly related to the fan reaction of Dante.

Everyone being accepting of Dante's change of character, but the moment they change up Raiden (which isn't even that much of a change aside from a bit more over the top) it's suddenly bad.

So it's ok for them to change up one iconic character but not ok for the other?
and concerning gameplay?
Looks great. Raiden isn't Snake and I don't expect him to play like him with this get up
Even if they were the same people, they can like one character, and not another character....

I heard that people didnt like the new Dante anyway. I would buy a game hes in, but he plays pretty similiar to the other Dante. This on the other hand, has nothing to do with MGS. At all. Looks like a typical Anime beat em up.

Im sure theres characters YOU dont like either, cmon.

This Raiden is arguably less over the top than he was in MGS4. In 4, he stopped Outer Heaven with one arm. Outer Heaven is a city-sized Arsenal Gear whose hangar carries 25 Metal Gear RAYs. If he couldn't toss a Metal Gear RAY into the air like it was nothing, then it would be at odds with his abilities in the main series.

Edit: Also, I've heard nothing but people complaining about Dante's change. So..wat?

People need to face it - Metal Gear Solid's style of gameplay couldn't possibly live up to how badass Raiden is. No, literally; its controls wouldn't have been tailored to him at all, for as the series' subtitle implied, the games were primarily about stealth action.

So it's a good thing that Snake's story is pretty much over, because this game doesn't need to give a damn about him. Raiden's alive and kicking, and he apparently has more than a little bone to pick with someone. Another game starring him was inevitable. But like MGS2...? It wouldn't have worked.

And Metal Gear realistic?

The trailer itself puts me in mind of the anime trailers [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDEof8HoEYw] of the early 1990s, back when anime was a new idea; it's actually a little eerie just how similar this new trailer is to the ones I watched as a kid.
Thsi was a fantastic description, Logan. I couldn't help but get the same vibe myself. It's only a shame I followed the link to youtube. The comments, mostly from upset teenagers, are not positive about the direction shit. That said I like over the top sometimes, and inventing words for movie titles is so 80's 90's that I can't help but approve.

Actually, not to be nit-picky, but the New Dante plays similar to Nero mixed with Ryu Hyabusa from Ninja Gaiden.
But it's not even that. Raiden hasn't changed that much at all. He's still the Raiden from MGS4 and this still takes place in the MGS universe.
That's why I'm a bit puzzled. Raiden hasn't changed for squat aside from his looks, but even then in MGS4 he's proven to show unbelievable feats of strength like Holding back Arsenal Gear with one arm, taking on an entire elite battalion of PMC Frogs with no arms and suddenly conjuring up lightning.

Seriously, I'm irked because people think THIS is too over the top, but are willing to accept a Series that knows it's a game

Examples:
- Psycho Mantis reading your memory card
- Otacon joking about not having to insert a 2nd disc in your re-visit of Shadow Moses
- Psycho Mantis coming back only to die because you have no Vibration function
- The Pain can teleport using bees
- Grey Fox (Just his existence alone)
- Revolver Ocelot ricocheting bullets at just the right angle (Someone studied Geometry)
- Raiden Fighting off 3 Metal Gear Rays in MGS2
- The End from Metal Gear Solid 3
- Everything Raiden did in MGS4
- Liquid Ocelot using Guns of the Patriots

No offense once again, but despite it's seriousness, the Metal Gear Solid Series has some serious WTF and convoluted elements that can only be believable at times when the game gives nod to the fact that it knows it's a game.

And to be honest yes there are a few characters I don't like.

I really can't believe that gamers have become so jaded that they can watch a trailer of a man who is also a cyborg ninja go toe to leg in a sword fight against a Metal Gear Ray before proceeding to throw it into the air then slice it apart and scoff at it!

Can you really say that it doesn't look fun as hell?
Fun isn't necessarily the issue, you can play a game, have fun, and still despise the game due to things like inconsistencies, story making little to no sense, characters acting out of character, villains doing evil things for no reason other than being the villain, or in the case of MGS 4, having the two sides fight for absolutely no reason than you want to have conflict.

Before you say something along the lines of "But games are meant to be all about gameplay" you need to look at the whole of a series instead of looking at the one title, the MGS games are based partially around gameplay, and mostly around story, so expecting people to just blindly accept this when it makes no sense in context is absurd.
You're absolutely right when you say that all of this makes no sense in the context of Metal Gear Solid. But this isn't Metal Gear Solid.

This is Metal Gear Rising. A spin-off. A side-story.

The new title alone shows that this is setting out to be a completely different experience than what we're used to. Snakes story will be continued in Metal Gear Solid 5 and will more than likely contain the MGS experience we're used to.
Fair enough, I guess this just takes some time before people get used to the idea.
Well the only reason I've been able to accept this so quickly is because I unloaded all my hate when the DmC reboot was revealed but after time and more information I've come to accept and look forward to it.

In this case I'm skipping the hate and just moving straight onto acceptance.
I can accept this and not the new DMC game, because this, as you said, is a side story, not a direct sequel. If the new DMC game was the same (a side story focusing on a new character) I'd accept it too.
Actually I believe that they've now pulled the "alternate universe" card in order to explain how DmC is so radically different if that helps at all. Certainly helped me although I'd still really rather a proper Devil May Cry 5.
But the alternate universe bullshit leaves no reason whatsoever for it to be leeching on the DMC franchise, simply make it it's own game. At least Rising uses the same character(s) and machines (Metal Gear Ray).

Actually if you ever played the Online Expansion of Metal Gear Solid 4, known as Metal Gear Online, you could play as customized PMC soldiers and at random times you'd be chosen to be either, Solid Snake, Liquid Ocelot, Meryl, Johnny, Mei Ling, Raiden or Vamp.

The gameplay for MGO was smooth and I still play it, but the mechanics for Raiden and Vamp are drastically limited to the games mechanics.

Here's a prime example of MGO

I'm probably in the Minority here, but I've never been into MGS that much, but I love me some hack n slash so I may actually pick this up!
