I'd say that I have two suggestions, but I have 10:

1. Finite numbers of weapons and amounts of ammo in the piles (At least during versus)

2. Stat tracking (so that you know if you're with an inexperienced person before the game)

3. Character Customization (For both survivors and Infected, with perks and custom "classes" [Note: Same types of abilities for survivor/infected type, but bonuses to be added {Boomers: Longer vomit range or greater explosion or longer bile time, Hunters: Greater leaping distance or greater damage or faster running speed, Smokers: More health or longer range or greater damage, Survivor: Greater speed or greater accuracy or greater damage or greater stealth or more carrying slots, ect.}]).

4. "Survival" Mode (Holding out in a house or some other setting for as long as possible with unlimited waves of zombies coming at you [especially good in versus]. Points scored for time survived.)

5. More Levels

6. Custom Levels (FOR THE CONSOLE!!! [Too many games only have construction sets for the PC])

7. Comes with a free microphone (Nothing more annoying than not being able to yell at people [and have them hear] when they screw up)

8. The ability to play as a common infected while waiting to respawn as a zombie (kudos to Yahtzee)

9. "HAL 9000" difficulty setting (The AI starts out on expert level but learns how you play as you move through the level, figuring out how to beat your every move)

10. Ability to play as Infected against only NPC survivors (with easy, medium, hard, expert, and HAL 9000 difficulty settings running them)

Edit: Melee weapons (Baseball bats, pry bars, 2x4's, ect.)
Pretty much this. And melee weapons only if:
-There isn't a weapon slot for them. You can pick 'em up, or drop 'em, but you can't switch to your gun and keep 'em.
-They do significantly more damage than gun melee. 1-2 hit kill.
-They eventually break, or become unusable in some other way. Wood items (baseball bat, 2x4 with a nail) break. Something like a crowbar could get stuck in a zombie's face or something.
-The crowbar is identical to the Half-Life crowbar
-Nothing outlandish. i.e. No katanas (unless one of the new levels involves San Francisco's Chinatown).

Your #4 wouldn't be that hard to do, they could just have it be the finales, but no rescue, and infinitely spawning zombies. In fact, with the exception of #7, and maybe #3, all of these could be conceivably done through DLC.

If there were a sequel, there would have to be more levels, better graphics, a few more guns, easier access to ammo, levels including meeting up with trapped civilians who join ur group, but do not act as one of the 4 main characters. thats pretty much it.

I think adding more customization will definitely detract away from the gaming. I mean, being able to make your own character is cool and all but I am a fan of "here's the characters; pick and play". I think that it's one of the few games where you spend next to no time with customizations and a TON of time in the actual game. As for more weapons, why do we need more? I mean, do you want four or five more guns? Seriously? I love the selection as it is.

There are two things I think could make a sequel interesting, maybe not better but definitely interesting.

1. Destructible/interactive environment. We already know they can do it since we have Half-Life 2 but I'd like to be able to move objects, pile things up, maybe even use teamwork so that two or more people pushing a car can move it so you can set up blockades. Make it so the zombies go for doors and windows but if they run into blocked up doors and windows they can bash through walls given enough time.

2. Sandbox levels. A few city blocks, objectives you have to accomplish, buildings you can walk around in, maybe even a skyscraper where you can walk around all the floors. They could split it into zones but give you the ability to move back and forth. I think some of the urgency would disappear but if they did it right it could be replaced with fear of the unknown.

Honestly, I think the implementation of the Director shows they are thinking about trying a sandbox type game. It works with a linear game, however, you know where you are going in a linear map and even if a rush can come from two or three different directions in a sandbox game it could come from anywhere.

More maps, new special infected, some new guns provided that their introduction doesn't actually affect the gameplay, some more cool set pieces, and finally perhaps some new survivor characters? Well why not?

Left 4 Dead doesn't need a sequel, and it seems it would just have a stupid name if it did. Hopefully when Valve gets back from the holiday they seem to be on they will release the SDK and the new campaigns (including versus).
That's all I really want. Having the SDK out in the public would allow for so many new maps and other options, not to mention a plethora of mods.

I think Valve's been sort of "mia" lately because they're rushing to release something about Episode 3. A few months ago they promised some tidbits by January, it's quickly approaching February.

um as shitty as it would be i think a nice touch would be an exhaustion factor.

like after 15 minutes of nonstop action your character needs to stop for a breather or eat an energy bar or something to keep them going. it would no doubt be annoying but it would add another sense of realism to an otherwise fantasy game.
Breaks the pacing. Wouldn't be too hot of an addition unless they slowed the whole game down [less zombies at once, not be able to reach you in a split second and so on]

I think there should be character customization, but have it not be mandatory. You have the original four survivors then if a player wants, they can put together a personal avatar (I'm pretty sure the female players don't like that only ONE character doesn't have testicles). The biggest problem with this is that the custom characters wouldn't have snappy one liners (I'm calling zombie bullshit here!).

more guns im sick of the same 6 over and over
The problem with this is that the guns are well balanced and fill EVERY role you need a gun for. I mean these survivors aren't going to be running around with RPG's every where. I think the developers went out of their way to make sure the guns you could get would make sense that you'd find them (except MAYBE the assault rifle)

I dunno about you guys, but I'd like to play as the Witch :D
You'd be immobile when the survivors approach you (and vision blurred, because you're not paying attention to your surroundings), and when the survivors disturb you, your screen unblurs, you can move, and your ability would be to target anyone of the survivors, not just the one who disturbed you, albeit with a large cooldown. Your normal melee would be intense.
That's just my wish, I doubt it'd make for good gameplay ;)

WOAH! That would be horrible! I don't want my character to have to stop for a rest. THat would ruin the game for me.
Oh, and i don't want more guns or zombie types either.
