Chapter 57: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

1st Hematite, 1055, Early Summer
Well summer has come, and our situation hasn't improved. Goblins are still sitting out in the wastes, thankfully keeping to themselves but keeping Reveredtour in lockdown none the less. The presence of their forces has lowered morale, but overall life seems relatively unchanged. Reveredtour really isn't dependent upon the outside world for survival. Most of our resources come from the caverns, and though helpful the caravans aren't necessary. Hopefully this situation won't change otherwise I'll have a crisis to deal with.
I wonder if I could negotiate peace with the goblins. I mean, sure they've been at war with us since the beginning of our civilizations, but it doesn't hurt to try!

Goden is such a jerk! I mean normally her advice is good, but sometimes she's just plain mean and wrong! This is one of those cases. I tried shouting to the goblins from across the moat to see if they wanted to negotiate some kind of peace treaty. To my surprise they agreed! All I needed to do was send an ambassador out to meet them.
But as soon as I told Goden about this, she slapped me and told me I was an idiot! She says the goblins are just using a "painfully obvious trick that only a moron would fall for". She always assumes the worst in people. Worst, she got most of the other dwarves to believe her. Now there's no way I can get them to agree to my plan. This could have been our one opportunity at peace and Goden ruined it!

Okay maybe Goden was right about the goblins. I kept trying to negotiate with the goblin leader from across the moat, but when I told him we wouldn't be sending an ambassador out he got really mad. Then his subordinates started throwing rocks at me! Sharp, pointy ones. I was wondering what they had been picking up all those stones for over the past few days. Well Lorbam easily deflected all the rocks, so I didn't get hurt. Actually one nailed me in the back of the head but I feel fine now!
I guess I owe Goden an apology.

Oh, I just had a brilliant idea about how to defend Reveredtour! It's an incredible plan and I should have thought of it earlier!
MAKE BOLTS!!!! IT DOESN'T MATTER IF WE DON'T HAVE CROSSBOWDWARVES!! WE CAN TRHOW THEM AT THE GOBLINS!!!!!
15th Hematite, 1055, Early Summer
Last night I had a strange dream. In it, I was visited by the ghost of a dwarf. I have no idea whose ghost it was, as I've never seen that dwarf before. Or at least I don't remember seeing that dwarf. But he told me how I could save Reveredtour from the goblins. Some might consider taking advice from a ghost to be foolish, but I think it's a great idea!
Chal said:
Oh! Idea!
Design a labyrinth leading to the fortress below the Z-level of the ocean. When it's ready, pierce the surface so that the goblins have access to the fortress. Pierce the ocean as they come charging through (this requires either a fast dwarf or a sacrafice).
It worked for me when I was hopelessly outnumbered by mounted humans in Kobold Camp. It gets dull trying to outlast sieges, and kobolds don't have the luxury of farming.
Your choice. Safety, security, and a long wait, OR insane engineering possibly leading to the death of a miner and an exciting enemy incursion, with a permanent underground scar to boot.
I think this will work great! A complex labyrinth that we then flood to drown all the goblins! I mean, I feel bad about killing them all in such a horrific way, but it has to be done. I still think my bolts idea will work wonders though. I've ordered the diggers to begin creating the path.
Hopefully they'll be done in a reasonable amount of time.

Okay the bolt plan was a failure. Momuz and some of the soldiers tried throwing some of the bolts at the goblins from across the moat. Rather than soaring into the skull of the goblin commander, they instead plunked pathetically into the murky waters below. This greatly amused the goblins who then began to taunt the soldiers. This also prompted another session of rock tossing, this time with both the goblins and our own soldiers. And yet somehow, the only person who got hit was me again!

It seems we're out of plants to brew. This represents a potential future problem, though at the moment I'm not too worried since we still have a large amount of booze stockpiled. However, this has resulted in many of the cooks having nothing to do but sit around. It's bad enough when you have dwarves not working, but right now the favored pass time of dwarves is to taunt the goblins across the moat. This prompts more rock throwing sessions, which results in more hits to the head for me. I think I'll reassign some of the cooks to masonry temporarily to avoid this.
2nd Malachite, 1055, Early Summer
Oh dear. It seems at some point Yara finally managed to kill our brave little octopud. This means that Yara no long has anything to distract him, and he'll surely return his attention to what he originally came here for; devouring dwarves. I better tell the military to get ready for an attack, since it seems inevitable at this point.

Short and boring, but that's all I could really do today. Hopefully next month will be more interesting.
