Chapter 77: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

__________________________________________________

2nd Sandstone, 1056, Mid-Autumn

After years of work, one of our greatest accomplishments has been completed. Something I can truly be proud of, for it represents the strength and wealth of Reveredtour. Finally, my office is finished!

Stonesense Version [http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/9099/roomsense.png]

I figured things were safe enough to have the masons finish building it. Now I have the proper accommodations of a mayor!

Good thing to. I'm sick of eating in the public dining hall and getting blood all over my food. After a while you get tired of everything tasting like vulture blood. Well, aside from the roast vulture of course.

6th Sandstone, 1056, Mid-Autumn

My god, it's a miracle! I was checking up on the patients when I noticed that many of them had vanished! At first I was horrified as I believed something terrible had happened, but it was quite the opposite! Instead, many of the dwarves I believed to be crippled for life were up and walking about!

Nothing short of divine intervention could have brought about such a wonderful occurrence. I guess the gods still have a plan for us. I hate to admit it, but I haven't prayed to either Arel or Asen in quite a while...I kind of figured they had forgotten about us. But if that's true, then what caused all these dwarves to regain their strength? It's the only logical conclusion.

13th Sandstone, 1056, Mid-Autumn

So for the past few days the goblins had been arguing amongst themselves a lot. It's hard to tell exactly what caused the feud in the first place, but I think it was a debate over whether or not they should retreat. Of course it wasn't until just now that I discovered why some of the goblins wanted to retreat.

Kraken's Notes: Giants are basically just massive humans. Unlike their cousins the cyclops and ettin, giants have no unique features other than being really fucking big. Of course sometimes being big is all you need to crush your enemies into a pulp. Giants may not be the most threatening of megabeasts, but they shouldn't be underestimated less you find the military reduced to a group of smashed corpses. An experienced military with good gear should be able to slay a giant without difficulty; however care needs to be taken to ensure that the soldiers attack as a group. Lone heroes charging against such massive opponents usually has poor results.

It seems a giant has come down to Reveredtour to feast upon dwarves. I never thought I'd be saying this, but this is actually a good thing. The goblins have no choice but to confront the giant for us. No doubt they will be able to defeat the giant, however they will most likely be significantly weakened in the process. No matter what happens this giant arriving can only benefit us. Well, that is unless the goblins manage to befriend the giant but that doesn't seem likely. Goblins aren't good at diplomacy, and giants are known to prefer eating diplomats rather than listen to them.

20th Sandstone, 1056, Mid-Autumn

Many of the dwarves decided to take their breaks now in order to watch the spectacle. They were expecting a good battle with plenty of bloodshed. To be honest it's kind of barbaric. I may have been watching as well, but that's not because I had some silly blood-lust to satisfy! I have to do because it is my job as mayor to document important events such as this.

Well the goblins had opted to stand firm and take on the giant. The squads grouped together and waited for the behemoth to approach. As it closed in on them, they let out a massive war cry. Warriors rushed forward without fear and the beak dogs screeched in joy, eager to sink their beaks into the exotic giant flesh.

The site of an enraged goblin horde is honestly quite terrifying. I can't help but imagine them attacking dwarves like this. The only goblins not rushing forward were the archers. The elite bowman leading the forces casually fired a single bolt at the giant.

And somehow this single bolt caused the giant to plummet to the ground. I'm not sure what part of the body you hit to completely cripple something that big, but the goblin commander did. The giant, dazed and lying face first in the cracked earth, was now completely vulnerable. The goblins exploited this opportunity instantly.

They swarmed over the giant, every soldier climbing onto it and doing whatever they could to keep it down. The giant couldn't even stand up, simply overwhelmed by the dozens of goblins. After a good hour of tearing apart the giant, one of the goblins managed to crack open its skull.

The giant most likely died long before this, but now we knew it was dead for sure. The goblins cheered, taking immense joy in their flawless victory. Meanwhile things were awkwardly silent back here in Reveredtour. We had all been expecting the goblins to at least lose some forces rather than defeat the giant without a single scratch. Slowly everyone went back to work, and soon only Root was left watching the goblins, brooding in silent frustration over the effectiveness of the goblin military.

Maybe it was just a really weak giant? Like one that was really hungry and hadn't had a healthy meal in weeks. We probably could have beaten it that easily to. I mean, the goblins can't be that good...we wouldn't have a chance of beating them if that were the case.

27th Sandstone, 1056, Mid-Autumn

It seems that poor little Woots still hasn't completely overcome her grief. Lately she's been waking up at night screaming, emerging from horrible dreams about her dead family.

However, both Goden and Woots herself tell me that she will be fine. Whenever she feels tormented by her memories, Woots just plays a happy tune on her piccolo. Music seems like a good way to get rid of bad thoughts. Though Woots said she doesn't do this because of the music but rather because she can only hear "comforting voices" when she uses the artifact. Which seems a bit...odd, but so long as it helps her get over her loss it can't be bad.

When I first read the title, I thought another forgotten beast came and destroyed the fort or that dust based syndrome finally kicked in. Sad that the giant was literally useless though I can't see any other megabeast being much more effective.

Actually two of the megabeasts we haven't encountered yet, the dragon and bronze colossus, are far more deadly than the other. The dragon is quite powerful and large, but is also capable of flying and breathing fire. You basically have no choice but to confront. The bronze colossus is massive, the largest creature in the game by a significant amount. Being made entirely of bronze, it is very difficult to kill as it suffers no pain and can not blead to death.

I know about the other two megabeasts, but all the dragons I've ever faced have gone down rather quickly to trained archers, which the goblins have a few of and I'm assuming that the goblins have some sort of iron weaponry to cut off limbs from the bronze colossus making it a very short battle with their numbers.

Oh well you're right that any megabeast probably wouldn't be able to take out that goblin horde. The thing about Dwarf Fortress is that currently, quantity > quality. A huge horde of weak enemies can overpower a single powerful foe most of the time.

As shown with the single arrow to the leg fall over swarm thing. Though that is partly because giants have no armor, of course. But yes, quantity is a quality in and of itself.

Chapter 78: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

5th Timber, 1056, Late Autumn

For years Reveredtour has had little expansion. Though we took control of the first two cavern layers early in the forts life, we have yet to continue to spread further underground. Well it's about time we changed that. I've talked it over with Root, and she's confident that the military can handle what I have planned.

We're going to conquer the abyss.

The abyss has so many rare resources within it, but we have yet to truly make use of it. For the most part it has been walled off out of fear of the creatures of the deep. Well the military is going to take care of that problem.

Yara must die.

10th Timber, 1056, Late Autumn

Well most of the soldiers are ready to fight, so I'll give the order for the diggers to carve a path into the abyss. Our plan for dealing with Yara is simple, but it will work. I think. The idea is that upon hearing the diggers enter the abyss, Yara will charge up the tunnel in pursuit of them. It is then that he will run straight into the military. The soldiers will be grouped together and ready to fight, and as a result will hack him to pieces before he can cause any damage.

How could it not work? It's not like it will be hard to trick Yara like this. He spent over a year trying to eat a little octopud. I think we can take him. It shouldn't be-

Wait.

...

OH MY GOD THAT'S INCREDIBLE!!!!

LET ME USE A WORKSHOP!!! I HAVE THE BEST IDEA EVER!!!

This update is ridiculously short, I know. The reason being I have some technical difficulties going on right now. Using old saves in new versions sometimes causes problems, and I'm currently experiencing one of them. I have to spend some time fucking around with the game to figure out a solution.

The Colossus could probably have made a pretty big dent. Even with full iron gear, it can take some doing to get severing on metal creatures.

That's a very good question! As you can see, Stinthad was taken by a fey mood. What I found was that she was demanding yarn cloth. Yarn cloth was only added in the new versions, and requires shearing wool off certain animals to produce it. However, becuase Reveredtour is an old save it is impossible to acquire yarn cloth!

You can probably see where the issue came from. I spent some time fucking around with the raw files trying to find a way to produce yarn cloth but all I ended up doing was breaking the game. It crashes everytime I try to load the Reveredtour save file.

So bad news is I fucked up the LP. Good news is the LP could have been fucked a lot harder, becuase I have a back up save. It's back a month though, so the events of the last update will be non-canon due to my idiocy.

The lesson here is to hold on to your old versions if you're doing a Let's Play.

Still, I expect much of the same to happen. Giant will probably still come, but there's a chance he'll actually do something other than make the goblins tired.

Actually, it might be a different type of mega beast, depending on luck it might do better anyway just gotta hope it dodges the two elite bow goblins and maybe it'll cripple a few of the goblins.

this thread is what put the Dwarf Fortress bug in my brain, where it has burrowed deep and tasted of the sweet grey matter within. so I totally downloaded the Lazy Newb Pack and have been watching video tutorials by some slow-talkin' guy.

I'm guessing my first expedition will die of starvation and badger attacks within a fortnight.

Bring turkeys. Lots of turkeys. 5 or more hens and a rooster is good, they are really cheap. Build nest boxes ASAP at a craftsdwarf workshop. They don't need anything else. And there's no shame embarking somewhere easy at first.
