Okay. I am not impressed.

Does anyone know how I can get my Dorfs in my fortress to actually make themselves some booze? It seems to go like so;
>cannot plant hops seeds: need potash
>cannot make potash: need ash
>cannot make wood burner: my Dorfs are all on strike

Heh. My captcha is "alcohol somethingsomethingsomething"
Underground Farm -> Plump Helmets -> Brew Plump Helmets -> Glorious Booze

Above ground farms are not very Dorfy.

Do underground farms not require potash and the like? If so, then stupendous. If not, then my stupid Dorfs remain fixated on not building mah burners.

Underground farms only need to be irrigated with water to make the soil muddy. But if you just make your farms down in the caverns, you don't have to bother with any of that busy work. As my LP has shown, making famrs in the caverns has no drawbacks whatsoever. Absolutely none.

Well, here's how my fortress was going.

Downside: no means of getting drink
Upside: only 7 Dorfs means I can last until the supply caravan
Downside: my population more than doubles due to migrants
Upside: I could use them for faster labour
Downside: none of them work, but the food and drink consumption is still double the safe rate
Upside: I could make an underground farm
Downside: There could be monsters that kill plenty of my Dorfs
Upside: if a bunch of Dorfs die, I can last until the supply caravan

WIN-WIN

And how the fuck does a kraken manage to walk on land?
Like an octopus!

They may be aquatic, but they can achieve limited movement on land.
I had no idea they could do that.... fuck. I hate squids and octopuses, they are the only animals that truly creeps me out.

Even safer is to use buckets. But that is seriously undwarfy.

But when I did it I made the farms right next to the brewery and alcohol store. I also made the booze pile the meeting point. So undwarfy was this 'safe' (shudder) farming method that when a dwarven caravan came along, the farms caught on fire out of shame. And so the traders were greeted with a massive explosion and 30 flaming dwarves running at them. The forest burnt for weeks. Then the elves declared war on the one survivor who could no longer walk.

Thus is the punishment of the gods for being too undwarfy.

Gah, that human diplomat again? It's odd that her arrival is always tied with horrible stuff happening. That reminds me of someone... Oh that's right:
...

*gulp*

On an unrelated note, it's impossible to be even slightly creeped out by that when Bollywood music plays in the background. Thanks dad.

...I don't know why I'm even surprised anymore.

Short term solution: Tell dwarves to gather plants. They can be brewed into booze while you wait for your farm to start up.
No potash needed.

I wish i could play Dwarf Fortress. I love RTS games, i love Dwarves(i have a Joseph Bugman coffee mug); but the games aesthetic is a barrier to entry i cannot pass. All the symbols blend together it gives me a headache and my attempt fails in the first 5 minutes. Just won't work when i can't look at the game without having to lie down. yes i sucked at algebra why do you ask?
Pretty much everyone feels this way at first. Unless you have prior experience with games that utilize ASCII characters, you're not going to have a clue as to what you're supposed to be looking at. If you stick with the game long enough though, eventually something clicks. Suddenly that mess of characters actually paints a picture. It paints the picture of a skeletal elk mutilating a hauler while dwarves flee in terror. The ASCII almost becomes charming in a way becuase you can use your imagination to fill in the gaps, like a book.

What never becomes charming is the interface from hell, which is really what keeps people from playing the game. If the graphics bothered you that much you could try downloading a texture pack (thought they never worked for me), but nothing can be done about the interface. Your only option is to suffer until it using it becomes an instinct. A lot of people don't have the patience or time to do that, which is perfectly understandable.

Like Kraken says, it's just using your imagination to see the symbols as things they aren't.

I still have a great time playing DoomRL.

A decent tileset for DF can help those of us with problems:

But some people think that's too un-dwarfy.

(I don't. Too much text - especially bright text - sends my brain funny)

Yes i use a texture pack aswell. I know you do not like them but can you try Kraken as i generally ignore the screenshots as vanilla makes my eyes bleed.

I cannot use a tileset. It actually messes with my head, since I am used to ASCII, I tried to use a tileset, but it just makes no sense to me, as I find no problem with it.
Edit: no problem with the ASCII.

Ive never tried to use the ASCII sets, but i do manage to understand them quite well. I just use a Texture pack cause i like the texture pack.
