I think people complaining that Lollipop Chainsaw is overly violent and has a needlessly sexualised protagonist and thus flies in the face of the "hard work" the gaming industry has done to establish gaming as a respectable artform need to pull the stick outta their ass and remember games are first and foremost entertainment and supposed to be fun.

I'm stick of every goddamn gaming taking itself too seriously, trying to have a "message", or pushing innovation for innovation's sake.

I'm going to get Lollipop Chainsaw and I'm probably going to love it. Here's why:

Created by Grasshopper Manufacture/Suda 51.
Written by James Gunn, creator of the hilarious "safe for work porn".
Music by Akira Yamaoka AND Mindless Self Indulgence.
You play as a goddamn cheerleader cutting up zombies with a goddamn chainsaw, and if it's anything like Suda's last effort, Shadows of the Damned, it'll be rife with tongue in cheek homages to great horror slasher flicks of the 80s. I believe one of Juliet's alternate costumes is Ash from The Evil Dead.

If you can't stop obsessing over the social implications of this kind of title and just enjoy it, I have to conclude that you're completely dead inside.

So game developers should just censor themselves, and save the government the trouble?

Don't really see what's won by that approach. Rights aren't worth jack shit if you can't use them. The people saying that games should be banned are worthless puritians who knows nothing of them, and catering to such filth is never the answer.

I've always thought that Suda51 does these things ironically. It's SUPPOSED to be trashy and ridiculous and over-the-top so you can get a laugh out of it. And besides, Animal House or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are two VERY absurd movies, yet I would still call them art. Art has no limits. It doesn't have to be serious to be art. It can be absurd, demented, and just plain wrong and still be art.

Porno movies, things directed by Michael Bay, and the room never stopped movies from being good. Even if this game is bad why would it?

Gaming as a whole in recent years has tried to prove to the world that it is a valid artistic medium on par with film and should be protected under the first amendment I believe games like Lollipop Chainsaw do nothing but hurt the progress
that the medium has made of the years.
People in politics over the years have said that games are too violent and have too much sex in them and this game is blatantly throwing it in everyone face. Sure the game companies can say "its a mature game kids should not play it" But come on its a half naked chick in a schoolgirl uniform killing zombies basically every 14 year old boys wet dream.
I for one and not normally one to cry that games have too much sex and violence but this game is blatantly spiting in the face of all the hard work game developers have fought for for so long.
You do realise they make shit films too? Hell Michel Bay has a career yet films are still considered an artistic medium..

Take a look at most horror films, often they juxtapose scantily clad young ladies with their high gore - no one would ever call them artistic, they're popcorn flicks, time to let the brain off for five minutes and enjoy some base sensibilities - I don't see Lollipop Chainsaw in any different light to them.

Some of the trailers it actually looks like they've retained the 'corny comedy' most b-movie horror flicks are imbued with.

Am artistic medium doesn't all have to be about art, photography is an artistic medium I enjoy a great deal, composing grand landscape images - other times I just want to look at bewbz..
This. And i'll add one more thing: how awesome are bewbz !?

Suda51 is the gaming worlds answer to over the top B-Movies. Movies that we know are trashy, gratuitous, and shticky, and that's why we love them. Suda51 makes the gaming equivalent of that. High quality games that we know are nothing but blatant pandering. All the characters are fantasy fulfillment and the whole thing is supposed to be over the top. It doesn't set gaming back, it isn't a horrible idea. It is mindless fun. Something that you are supposed to sit down and enjoy because you know that it is just silly.

It's just one of those ideas Suda51 got while smoking...whatever it is he smokes.

In all seriousness, we'll see a popular opinion/reaction when the game actually comes out.

you realize if every game was an art game then games would suck
not that all art games are boring but many sacrifice fun to make a point
this for example
http://www.kongregate.com/games/LemmiBeans/one-chance
sure it's kinda interesting but gameplay wise you are just walking
then there games like okami mange to be both art and fun(imo) and also one of favorite games
the opposite form a game like that no more heros
no more heros was not trying to be art but yet it also one of my favorite games

the same way your average mindless action movie has just as much of a place as a Art films.
lets say what you say is true then why has your average mindless action movies has not ruined art films?
how did a game like journey get made when there is a new call of duty coming out every year?
what i am saying is your argument is bullshit and you know it

I fail to see why we should feel that LC is going to set back the medium. We don't flip shit every time Micheal Bay makes a movie or when the person who wrote twilight rights something and claim that it is hurting those mediums. Some games are made for artistic purposes, others are just made for entertainment.

I seriously doubt that ONE game is going to set us back as an art form. Besides, why do you care so much about what other people think about the industry? I doubt most people think we're too over the top, it's just that with anything, the radical minority is always very, very vocal.

It's like saying everyone hates Twilight, obviously not if they're doing so well in movie theaters, why would you think that? Oh, maybe because most people that talk about Twilight hate on it constantly. But apparently, either they're just joining the crowd and go see the movies anyways, or they're just the minority. I'm betting on the latter. I personally don't like it, and think it shouldn't do as well as it does, but meh. All the power to them if it does do well.

The point is, Lollipop Chainsaw isn't really all that bad, and you shouldn't care about what other people think of the Industry, because they're more than likely just a vocal minority.

I'd much rather have a funny game that's fun to play than some pretentious-ass game that has crap gameplay. Lollipop Chainsaw looks like a fun game, and it's one of the few games I plan on buying this year, along with Resident Evil 6 and Fall Of Cybertron. I don't give a damn if it's "Artistic" I just want to have fun.

Plus, if LC had to be compared to a movie, I'd probably compare it to Army of Darkness. And nobody talks crap about Army of Darkness. Also, I'm fairly certain that her outfit is a cheerleader uniform, not a schoolgirl uniform.

>Art like film
>Clearly forgetting about Rocky Horror Picture Show

See, the way you're using art, you expect all games to be like Braid and Limbo and have some deep meaning. That's not what art is and your definition is far too limiting. Look at the Smithsonian picked games. Gradius V was one. That's not Social Network, that's Independence Day.

Next point:

>Half-naked girl
>Girl wearing a Catholic school uniform

(yes, I know it's a Japanese school uniform, just run with it as they're near identical)

Those Catholics are such a fan of nudity, right? You can see her legs. Are you saying women shouldn't be able to wear shorts because all young boy will fap?

>Hard work game devs have been doing to make the medium an art form.

What crack you on? There has been little progress made throughout this generation. I mean it, look at the released games. Most are shooters and the best ones are the ones that want to take life to the extreme like Vanquish. This gen has Gears of War as one of its lead franchises, as well as God of War. Think about that.

If film is allowed to have trash like Sucker Punch, Transformers and American Pie then gaming should have it's own equivalents.
Not every film has to be like Citizen Kane or The Godfather and the same should apply to games.

So what, are games not allowed to simply be good old fashioned mindless fun anymore?

At the end of the day that's what it's all about.

Edit:
As people mentioned, it's made by Suda 51. Don't expect it to make sense, do expect it to be filled with gore, sexual themes and bad f*cking language.
