Just goes to show you, you don't need 10 billion games, game quality of pristine crystal or remake after remake after remake after remake to become a popular developer.
My best hunch is Mojang brought in some new, simple and fresh to the table for people to enjoy.
Even games and their developers age with time and begin to smell a little.
Honestly, I gave Minecraft a go then I grew really bored, but I'm not surprised that something like that managed to become popular.

I'll admit it, I don't think that Mojang really deserves this. I mean, Notch and the other team members have done well with Minecraft, but I'm really getting a sense of disorganization. I mean, Notch hasn't really added anything hugely impressive to the game for a good 6 months.
Minecraft'd better get some big new features added quickly (other than the bullshitty stuff like achievements and modding support,) if Mojang wants to really deserve this, and perhaps that cool new game.

Popularity trumps quality. I mean, this is the world where people think the Jersey Shore is cool after all. Props to Notch for conceiving a way to get people to buy into a game before its even finished (and thus fund his dev studio without having to issue stock certificates).

Edit: Guy below me: 6183972 registered users, of which 1796975 have bought the game. A lot of the registered users are just "hmm, I want to play this game and see what the buzz is all about," but you get the point, the game has a lot of followers/dedicated fans.
That said, I think most people were willing to vote to support the underdog till about the final four. Then, people mad at Valve and Bioware started voting against them. Half were fans, half were fans hurt by the opposition in someway.

For those wondering, no, it was NOT pretty this year. I saw a lot of Permanant Bans going on. There was a Hate-o-meter created in Minecraft that had rising lava for forum hate. It overflowed every single round, no matter how high it was built.
Yeah, so... popularity contest > actual palpable quality of developer. Just like everything else in life. I just... I was hoping the Escapist community would be different. At least I don't have to put up with this shit for an entire year again. Just... fuck.
